I used to have my on-demand patching turned off but it seems to have been turned back on after the most recent patch. Just a heads up to people. Check it if you don't like the on-demand to check it.
are you aware what on demand patching actually does?
quote:- "STO now supports On-Demand Patching. Instead of downloading every file that the game ever needs before running the game, the launcher will now just download required and commonly used files. This will lead to much faster initial installs and getting back into the game more quickly after large updates. As you play the game, if another file is needed, the game will automatically patch it on demand."
this basically means with it turned off you will be required to be downloading every file that the game ever needs most of which you probably don't.
also the more files you have on your PC the more chance something may get corrupted and cause problems and the longer a verify will take to locate the offending file.
it also means every time there is an update you will have much more to download then a player with ODP turned on especially when there is a season or expansion update..

When I think about everything we've been through together,
maybe it's not the destination that matters, maybe it's the journey,
and if that journey takes a little longer,
so we can do something we all believe in,
I can't think of any place I'd rather be or any people I'd rather be with.
I have a fast connection and I leave it enabled. Unless there are server/hosting issues it's usually no problem.
However from watching it I really don't understand what the hell it's patching. Entering a zone should only need to be patched once, until the next time they make a change, yet for a while I was get patching every time I entered a Borg RA, Fleet Starbase, and so on. Weird.

It only downloads the files once when it's turned off. The problem with on-demand patching turned on is that it will download files the game doesn't have as you play the game. This can cause lag as well as longer loading times when changing maps. If all of the files are there it speeds up the process.
I've kept the feature off for years and didn't have any issues. I use to have severe lag and long loading screens when I first started playing until someone told me to turn it off.
Usually it only takes me a few seconds at most to load into any map, and often times it only takes a couple. Though on occasion it can take up to about 30 seconds to load.
Force verifying the files only takes a few minutes at most for me.
Just got today's patch. The on-demand patching was *not* turned back on automatically for me. The OP must have had it on for a while without realizing it.
I turned mine off because after the 40 percent bug finally went away (crashing while loading maps), the on-demand patching itself was causing the game to freeze.
imo on-demand patching is junk and should be avoided... yes it can reduce your initial DL and get you back into the game sooner... but then your stuck DL each time you zone into a new zone... sorry but to me that is infinitely worse. I hate zoning, and being stuck at a screen when it DL the files to me makes me just want to log off and play something else or go watch a vid. I now let the game DL the full patch and play the next night (most times), to me that is a better use of my time and feels more productive.

see last time they did a major update and it was about 10gb was with season 11 and I was in the game in about 15 minutes on my home network, how much more would there have been with ODP turned off.
I can bare the 30 seconds or so it takes to download a map once in a blue moon and that's using my slower mobile connection.

Your mileage may vary.
