I am getting a whole boatload of these private messages lately. I'm added as a 'friend', then I'm PM'd with the above message (///< wtsitem .(0m>$15.92/100M EC+10M,22keys=$16.42) then subsequently removed from said users friend list. It's becoming annoying. I thought it was just through social zones, but I've just had one come up in a mission that I'm doing on my own.

Someone sort this out please. It's becoming increasingly annoying.

I think I had a similar issue yesterday but I was afk in the winter zone and didn't see it until I got back.

Gold seller spam is getting really annoying in game now, it's not just in zone chats now, it's moving to PM's and mail too!

But on the other hand I guess it shows the game must be doing well if these idiots see it as a valid place to try and get income from. A dead game would get ignored by them.

I guess Im blessed for the fact it happened to me only once through PM/friends add. That said, I get half a dozen ingame mails with spam like that, sometimes more, and I agree its really really annoying...would like to see it sorted out as well.

I was just thinking, maybe the OP created this post so he could advertise the site on the forums without getting in trouble.

You think like me jack... lol

To the OP: Here is a novel solution, don't accept friend requests from people you don't know!

If that was the case, he would have created a new account to do it. Look at his post count. You think he'd risk having that banned? Perhaps a little more careful thought before flinging accusations, hmm?

And, back on topic, yes I am getting these messages too

theres not an awful lot they can do about this more then they have done already, they can ban the account they are coming from but the sellers can just create more accounts as needed.
they can restrict chat and mail to a certain higher level to make it more difficult but that only hurts genuine players.
they have a fishing screener in place but the more stuff they input to be searched for the more genuine messages that are likely to be blocked.
all they can really do at the end of the day is tell you to ignore these messages as they are a scam.

you can block messages from unknown senders and block all invites but you risk missing out on stuff you might want if you do.

at least now we are able to select and delete multiple mails it will be easier to get rid of the garbage.

When I think about everything we've been through together,

maybe it's not the destination that matters, maybe it's the journey,

and if that journey takes a little longer,

so we can do something we all believe in,

I can't think of any place I'd rather be or any people I'd rather be with.

One way to kill this gold seller nonsense dead would be if Cryptic undercut them to the extent they were no longer profitable.
They only exist because high end rare items or things bought with real money are expensive (some ridiculously so) and people don't want to grind or gamble for them.
If the game had legit ways to buy things like the Annorax or other box ships it would mean people would not go looking for less reputable sources.

It's already been stated, but I've been around here a good couple of years. I wouldn't risk a ban by advertising. Don't jump to conclusions, it's bad for you.

Someone else jumping to the incorrect conclusion here. Typical. I don't accept these invites. I get an invite, and before I have chance to react, I automatically get a PM from the user that has sent me that invite. I can equally ignore/decline the request, yet I still get the PM. It's almost as if I'm automatically accepting the requests (which I didn't think was possible) because after they've came, and said their piece, I get a chat window message that states I have been removed from their friends list (even though I never actually accepted it in the first place).
at least now we are able to select and delete multiple mails it will be easier to get rid of the garbage.
I get the mail ones too, though haven't had them recently. The ones I'm on about at the moment though, they're in-game chat messages/requests. Nothing to do with the typical mail system (which doesn't work for me anyway).

With regard to accounts, surely (in many cases) said accounts are linked to an IP address? Ban the account, ban the IP. That should at least limit the number of people that are able to return.

If you send someone a friend invite, then cancel it, it tells them you removed them from your friends list.

Aha... Maybe it's also a way to circumvent PM restrictions, indicating that you're temporarily considered a "friend"?

Or is there any other reason to bother with the friend request?

The answer is so simple, I can't think of a reason why it isn't already done. When tells are only accepted by friends, make it necessary that the other person clicks accept before the person trying to PM can do so.

That doesn't explain why these spammers need to send me a friend request before trying to sell me their TRIBBLE. If I'm running a mission or running that winter race, the last thing I need is a notification window to pop up in the middle of nowhere.

What would be helpful is not asking Cryptic to lower their prices, or making another thread about this subject. OP you should know how to use the search function. Cryptic has provided tools in the game to report gold sellers.

Lastly OP in your subject line you provided the address to a gold site on these forums for everyone to see, it does not matter your intentions, but you are validing to the gold sellers their campain to reach players in the game is working.

Good job for letting the North Koreans I mean gold sellers win!

It's cause people set things so they can only get PMs from friends. The spammers found a loophole/bug that allows them to send a PM if they've started a friend request. Best thing you can do is only make yourself only visible to friends and remove yourself from open teaming etc (so you don't show up on that list) so they can't "find" you.

Yes, what the OP experienced is annoying, but if that's the worst thing that happens to the OP all day--welcome to Heaven.

    .
He could probably have taken an even better title, but the title does decidedly not say who is selling something.

Go completely /anon or make yourself only visible to friends, under the Privacy settings (O) then privacy.

Should alleviate it a little bit.

Also to the bonehead who wants cryptic to go out of buisness to TRY and undercut the gold sellers...yeah...how about no. Gold sellers will ALWAYS be able to undercut ANYTHING cryptic does because most of them are SCAMS. They don't ACTUALLY have anything to sell you...or very little to get you on the hook. You can't undercut a scam bonehead. Oh this ship costs 10 bucks, well I will sell it to you for 1...I don't need to actually get the 10 dollar ship if all I want is your personal info. But then again, I suspect you already know this and using this thread as an excuse for it's too expensive whine.

Cool your jets there, chumley. There's no cause to get all excited just because you disagree.

And as far as "reported", it's sad how we have become a society of informants, running to report someone to authority at the drop of a hat, like a little Quisling.
