The game teaches you some of the basics but the first things to learn are what your officer's powers do so you can pick the right ones, and what power levels do in a ship, and what the various weapon types are and which you like. Those are critical things to know which are a total miss in your training and often overlooked by new players.
Captain class is a good thing to know before choosing. All three have merits, tactical is damage which is a big part of STO but engineers on the ground are tons of fun and sci is interesting in both space and ground combat. Any class can fly any ship and do it well ... engineers in damage dealing but fragile ships can keep them alive, tacs in a sci boat can do scary things, and so on. You don't have to feel pushed into a type of ship or role with any class. I say engineer is easiest to play, due to a number of skills that can save you when you goof. Many say go tactical for everything cause damage is a big part of the game. Sci is kind of the alternative style class, for people that like to do things differently.
noro brings up some good points, the basics are given to you in the tutorial. Other than that the main thing you need to figure out is what all the different abilities do. Bridge Officers (that you acquire as you play) have powers that you can use in space or when they accompany you on the ground. You can easily change them if you can find the Bridge Officer Trainer, I wont say where exactly since Im not sure how to explain the location to a new player but make sure you explore Earth Space Dock, the main Federation social zone, the tutorial ends in there.
Know what Bridge officer (boff) powers do so you can figure out what you want. The other thing to pay attention to are space weapon types. Anytime you get a new one compare it to what you currently have and just see how the differences. If you dont get it at first dont worry about it, you'll understand the more you play. Just dont throw away the old weapons without at least reading the name.
Other than that just have fun. Read what noro said about classes, the simple version is Tactical officers and escorts are damage dealers, Engineers and Cruisers are Tank/support and Science officers and Science ships are Healears/Crowd Control/Support. You dont need to use a specific ship with a specific class so I recommend trying each type at least once as you level up. Another factor in making your Proffesion choice might be knowing some of the high level powers they get (at least, I found that interesting.) Some of the fun ones are Engineers get Orbital Strike for use on the ground, I think the name is self explanatory. Tactical Officers get Security Escort, you can beam in two Security Officers to help you on the ground (more if you get the right Duty Officers, you'll learn about those at lvl 11.) And Science Officers get Photonic Fleet, it creates 3 holographic ships that fight for you in space (yes they do damage even though they're holograms.)
Just realized I wrote more than I intended, moral of the story is, just have fun and do what you think is best

OK, sorry for needing to hijack this topic, but as they don't allow someone new to create a thread i have no choice.
I started the training and go to the locker to grab the rifle but after doing so it is not in my inventory so can't be equipped, so can't proceed. Can I restart the training somehow to try again, and see if it is a one time anomaly.
