"Scan Area" button on the map?

Is there a use for the "Scan Area" button on the main map? "Scan Area" button on the Mini map scans for anomalies you can gather. The "Scan Area" button on Main map shows many more anomalies and displays a message. "Captain, the ship's sensors are picking up X unusual objects in this system." Do the unusual objects have a purpose?

scan area finds crafting materials and in a select few missions, your next mission goal and in a couple optional goals. But its mostly for crafting nodes. When you get to the object, very close to it, you can interact with it to loot.

I know about the scan area button on the mini map (or V button on the keyboard). I'm talking about the Scan Area button on the MAIN map.

New player here I have the same question as the OP an I cant find an answer on the wiki or redzit or anywhere, does anyone know what the x unusual objects are? or what there for? when you hit scan area on the main map

They do the same thing, usually when I press V, it also says "x unusual objects." That's just referring to the number of crafting items are left on the current map. Try scanning out a crafting node, scan the area to see how many there are, grab the node, and scan again.
