Title says it. I am leaning towards the Icarus but am looking for some comunitie thoughts and perspectives since I haven't really touched pilot at all.
Question can't be answered, the 'best' is very subjective depending on play style.
Personally, I went with the Icarus, I enjoy the ability to throw Gravity Wells while I zip through everything at maximum speed.
My second favorite is the Ajax, the extra engineering capability is very nice. Being that I do just beams with no torp or anything, the Mercury was too tactical heavy for me. I don't use a lot of the pilot Boff abilities either, so for my particular needs, the tactical version would involve me using Boff slots on Pilot abilities that I don't particularly need just for the sake of having something there.
For me, it goes 1. Icarus, 2. Ajax, 3. Mercury. But again, that's just for me and the way I build the ship. For you it might be completely different.
I put a fleet core in my build, but I actually use the Temporal Phase Overcharged Warp Core from Butterfly (at UR for AMP) because it pairs with the Tetryon Omni for a 13.3% Damage boost.
I lean to the ENG variant in use, but bought the 9pack. Owning the Icarus is the main reason I skipped the Hestia. But yes, ENG variant with the missile console is fun.
Do have to say I enjoy the Nandi, and plan to grab the Kor.
But if I had to pick one variant, the ENG Ajax or its Rom/KDF equivalent would be my choice.
Unless you like to use GW to cluster your enemies, then Lock Trajectory, CSV, TS, and whatever else. If you want to play like that the Icarus is your go to ship.
Thanks for the Advanced Light Cruiser, Allied Escort Bundles, Jem-Hadar Light Battlecruiser, and Mek'leth

I consider the sci variant to be the best of the pilot ships. Reason is the fact that it can slot a grav well. This ability has a huge impact for general PvE and boosts the efficiency of ships with 5 front gun ports quite a bit.

Nice ship, I'm a big fan of the Ajax.
This is my Icarus: U.S.S. Warsaw.

This ship is a monster. I love flying it.
That did it for me, GW is really handy to have.
But the Icarus trait is also quite nice, 0-15% [Pen] based on your speed.
Solid ship trait.
I agree, and it meshes well with Pedal To The Metal. Just keep it at full impulse and shred EVERYTING.

No matter what, you end up with one of the absolute best ships in the game.
I hope you enjoy your new ship, I think you choose wisely.
