Experimental Proton Weapon

Why is this so bad, even when buffed with the set items?

It just does not compete dps-wise for me with a random MK XII DBB in it's slot instead.

It seems like a great idea on paper, but its implementation is lacking. Or am I doing something wrong?

Nope. They *could* have made it so the generic beam weapon and generic projectile tac consoles buff it as well, as the weapon is neither fish-nor-fowl, bu alas we are obliged to use the crappy tac consoles for any buffs beyond the set...

A quick and dirty fix would be to make the consoles adjust the damage as a different "type" that is AFTER buffs....that would be at least noticeable yet not game-breaking.

Yup they do have resistances to the Proton Weapon..Since it's an energy type with a shield pen proc.

It would be better served as an Omni-Turret.

I knew using Kinetics would be playing the game on hard mode, but what I didn't realize was how bad the deck is stacked against Kinetics.

Yea...or at least be buffed by +Beam or +Cannon consoles.

Essentially you run it for the set bonus and then look at the aggregate effect:+3% ch + photon boost vs single weapon drop off or the big photon boost with the 3 pc. It also has a low power drain, so is of much greater use on recently levelled toons that don't have a ton of great gear and traits, the only mid-high end setups using it will be torp boats using the photon boosts.

That's currently why I have it slotted - in my rear weapon slots, where it basically does not contribute to my dps. I run a torp/sci currently and the 3 piece contributes more dps than another omni beam, but it still feels like a waste of a slot as the vast majority of my targets have to be kept in my forward arc, which means it essentially sits there doing nothing.

At the very least, they could make this an omni, or buff it a little so I can replace a front launcher with it. Even if its a dps break-even, I'd rather have it doing something besides taking up space for the sake of a set bonus.

It can be used with beam overload, so an option is to fire that and take down a good chunk of shield and then send in your killer big hitter torp for an insta kill, problem with this is that its levelling tactics against endgame foes - 20k off an adv cube shield is peanuts, and you're losing a tac ability spot.

Doesn't it lose dps like a cannon rather than beam with distance?

    Look at those reps:
Borg 2 pc used by many, 3 piece by almost no one.

Nukara no one using the tetryon dbb and a few the mine, nukara console dropped from high end builds

Rom often used 2 piece and 3pc due to the torp not the set power

Dyson torpers only, although console( WP and EPS) and torp both pretty good

Undine some use disruptor boost, 3pc is probably only used on undine levels if people can be bothered to switch

delta 2pc torp + console gets played not sure the third bit gets added

iconian similar too delta but with torp out and beam in, the torp sucks and 3pc does not compensate, 2pc is imo a decent tanking bonus

Conclusion: Don't expect much utility from set bonuses.

3 Piece is pretty much on every sci ship..

This gun is a pain in the behind really. The set bonuses are pretty darn good but apart from the torp the separate set pieces are poor.
I only have it slotted to gain the extra photon damage from the 2 piece set. If it was an omni-beam it would be slightly more attractive.
