Re-starting KDF

after playing alot of the Blue and Green side, both are fun and all but they tend to burn out a person for sometime, their ship designs, uniforms and social hubs, etc. I tired of the same sooo..

Never played the red. No properly, I did it but that's when STO went F2P and left quickly After I hit lvl 50 and that's where I didn't have much knowledge of trek

Now I do. Watched DS9 and Voyager, some of TNG and Movies (no counting J.J. Trek) and playing some star trek games.

I have some question regarding the KDF and the Klingon Empire in general before going into the KDF (again but properly)

Ever since Chancellor Martok was killed by J'mpok for the position and leadership of the empire in a questionable duel. The entire empire as whole suffered a massive changes with the introduction and assimilation of different cultures and races into its fold (read: conquered or "allied")

How much this affected the KDF? (odviously alot seeing in-game) but that being said, how comes that the KDF allows other races to command Klingon Ships if they are conquered and labeled as "vassal" second class citizen within the empire? Why would a klingon obey a non-klingon in their own ship?

also, How much changed the KDF since 2012? technically, a Month ago I returned to STO

well i joined when the first xpac hit with romulus, and thus KDF got some beginner missions and such, so at least you can be level 1 kdf now.

From a gaming standpoint, the Klingons conquering other races was a reason to add more races into the game without throwing them all to the Federation side.

Lore wise, you can see it as the Klingons respecting a proven warrior enough to follow them / obey them on their own empire's ship.

The KDF has changed much since you left. The most obvious change is that you no longer need to level up Fed side first in order to start playing a KDF character at level 25. They have their own tutorial and starting missions that get you in the groove and they're finally getting more ships, but no science vessels.

In a TNG episode , commander Riker serves as first officer on the klingon battlecruiser Pagh and at the end of the episodes he's even the captain. Everything is earned in the Empire; except maybe the high born but they also could lose everyting by dishonorable conduct.

Well, the background of Martok suggests that non-Nobles do not have it easy getting into the fleet, especially if another noble refuses them (which is apparently possible with no reasons given). That's why he had a grudge against Kor, IIRC.

But Riker was already an officer in another fleet - that was simply not called into question when he joined the Klingon ship.
That's probably also the reason why at least the Gorn can be part of the STO KDF - they were already officers in the Orion military. I am not sure if the Orion would qualify here - they might actually have the biggest trouble advance, but I guess being seductive has its perks. (ANd since most Orions we see in STO in higher rankings are female ;), everything is neatly consistent). Letheans and Nausicaans might either have a military background with their homeworlds, or be able to hire on as Mercenary and prove themselves in combat.

Ultimate, your rise to Captain itself is pretty well covered in the Klingon tutorial. You only have to ask yourself how you made it to 2nd Officer, but that doesn't seem that hard, comparitively.

And of course - the fundamental assumption in STO is that the KDF does accept non-Klingons in its ranks, which I don't think was the case ever before in the Empire.

It simply shows that things change even in the Empire. Martok mentions that commoners becoming officers was already the thing when he was being considered for officer rank by Klingon Oversight Council. It was usually just a formality, but Kor must have had a bad hair day (or was simply too conservative and couldn't stand commoners being officers) and denied his promotion. But at that time (TNG era) it was already standard for commoners to rise above bekk rank and become actual officer.
Non-klingons being able to enlist and gain rank became the thing during Klingon conflicts with Romulans and Gorn, (especially after J'mpok's debacle at Zeta Pictoris). Path to 2409 states that all citizens of the Empire were allowed to enlist to fill in for the losses and allow for expansion of military in general.

My Orion character became a General by earning the respect of the Empire with her deeds in battle and honorable conduct, but it wasn't as easy as it would be for a Klingon I suppose.

"He shall be my finest warrior, this generic man who was forced upon me.
Like a badass I shall make him look, and in the furnace of war I shall forge him.
he shall be of iron will and steely sinew.
In great armour I shall clad him and with the mightiest weapons he shall be armed.
He will be untouched by plague or disease; no sickness shall blight him.
He shall have such tactics, strategies and machines that no foe will best him in battle.
He is my answer to cryptic logic, he is the Defender of my Romulan Crew.
He is Tovan Khev... and he shall know no fear."

It's not that easy, even for a Klingon. It's one thing to use the word honor in threats such as to say "You insult my honor? I have killed for less!" and another thing to earn it as my main does.

Oh I'm not saying it was easy. It definitely was not. Theres still many klingons who hate her too.

I use the term "As Easy" to describe a degree of difficulty, not a statement about it being easy.

I think the "lore" has it that nobody was truly conquered...

Orions sided with KDF in treaty first, supplied military second.
    Letheans and Nausiccans are Mercenaries
    Ferasians are there
That leaves the Gorn, and the lore has the Gorn race "earn" themselves practically a seat on the high council, so as such, they've "earned" themselves the right to represent in the navy...
Detecting big-time "anti-old-school" bias here. NX? Lobi. TOS/TMP Connie? Super-promotion-box. (aka the two hardest ways to get ships) Excelsior & all 3 TNG "big hero" ships? C-Store. Please Equalize...

Gameplay magic is all i see it as. they didnt want to put all the so called bad guy species on the fed side and CBS insisted they have the other faction.

personally i refuse to play other species or let them serve as a captain . but to each their own with so many not really giving a TRIBBLE about the kdf anything to get more people playing the faction is so advantage. i just will not do it.

for starting a new toon. Welcome to the Empire allot had changed in game play. we actually have missions from lvl 1 and up to about lvl 40 ish you still get different mission options as a Klingon ( new arc revamp will probably kill that ) but at least for now half way through game play you can still be a Klingon. then it all changes to the vanilla one story fits all silly missions.

Although she never commanded a klingon ship Dax is a good example of a outsider who commanded great respect within the empire even though it was her previous host that made the most impact on the Empire.

I also enjoyed seeing Jadzia around Klingons. She also made a mark of her own with a few Klingons. I enjoyed seeing her join the Dahar Masters on their quest, including leaving the oppurtunity to kill the Albino to a dying Kang. I also liked seeing her on the Klingon warship when Martok first took the Rotarran to rescue another ship. She certainly knew how to assert herself when it comes to the proper seats at the mess hall.

She used Kurzon's experience when it comes to dealings with Klingons but certainly made her own mark there too.

Klingons respect honor, whether it be in a klingon or in another species.
