so they are dropping the damage of plasma explosion consoles from the embassy coming soon-
some say nerf, others.. a return to sanity
its crit is being removed from its only functional element, faw.. (for those that didn't know, embassy plasma explosive consoles only added a crit chance when doing faw, not rapid fire, not ... anything else really LOL!!!)
and they are dropping the damage that embassy explosions do in the first place!
bort says to the tune that "cause we cant get them to proc off on the rest, best for the time being, none proc the crit (faw) in the first place... by the way, we ran the numbers and these sci plasma explosions were out preforming damage consoles (you know, damage consoles as in your tactical consoles) SO going to drop the damage to be more in line"
FOR SOME... coming this Thursday?.. armageddon LOL!! :P
others?
FAW is still king... but now, a tighter margin
I suppose the primary idea would be to debate the pros and cons of this change (big change... affects pve and pvp..etc)
but I guess, I am a bit more interested (just me:P ) in..
precision builds
those of us in pvp know what precision builds are, we have been building precision ships for years in this game
CURRENT META
current meta dictates: this........, that........, this team, that ship, etc, etc
those of us doing pvp, been doing it for years.. have had to deal with this.. LOL!!! "floor dropping out" before, time and again
you know what I am talking about...
you find a build that could work, a new tactic, a "leg up", you BUILD IT (no small feat, ask any pvper, its spendy any way you cut it) and after swiping the credit card... or the nest egg blown.. or months of grind... you have her ready...
she preforms..
for.. about... a handful of months LOL!!!!! (you fellow pvpers gotta be laughing with me right here, you know my pain, shes flys SWEET for a couple months TOPS!)
then, it happens-
meta change.
we all been there,
I guess my question I want to pick the brain of those around, those that know the pain, those that have played for some time, those that have spent those hours creating a "precision build" a build with a AIM
a build, designed to capitalize on the current meta, to BE MIN/MAX by definition of MMO standards...
ARE PRESION BUILDS WORTH CREATING IN STAR TREK ONLINE?
before you answer,
think:
is it worth it to pay/grind/build a ship that in a handful of months will no longer be MIN/MAX?
is this game best played casual?
is this excellent FUEL to keep innovating, exploring, changing, invigorating, TO keep chasing ever changing meta?
we all know there are many different levels of MMO gameplay happening in star trek online, casual gamer to the min/maxer.. and everything in between,
but where do you fall in?
where is your horse in this race?
we as pvpers have had the carpet pulled out from underneath us time and again over the YEARS, it would appear that with the expansion of the dps crowd they too have finally reached "creating expensive, precision builds" and now they are faced with a "meta change"
so-
is it worth it in star trek online to create/build/pay for a
precision build?
p.s.
long live the pew;P

Remember when Escorts were absolute Kings of STO? For PVP as well as PVE?
Remember when DHC>All Others? If a ship couldn't fit DHCs, that was a massive downgrade in many peoples' opinions, and I still recall TONS of Fed envy of all Klingon Battlecruisers being DHC-capable. I still remember that if you showed a build with anything other than a DHC and the ship was capable of fitting it, the player would be derided for that. Now it's all about Beams. Now if a ship is no longer DHC-capable, nobody gives a TRIBBLE.
Remember when Subspace Decompiler, VM, PSW, etc. were worth a damn?
Remember before LOR releasing, we had the Beam Overload Double Taps? How much resources were expended for all those Marion DOFFs to see them nerfed when LOR hit?
Remember when Acc x3 was king and sold for ungodly amounts in the exchange? I know a bunch of serious PVPers spent lots and lots of resources to get Acc x3 weapons. Should be still useful having Acc in PVP but the game as a whole has changed greatly from that.
Remember when the Bird of Prey was the King of Terror?
Remember when the JHAS was clearly the best ship of STO?
That's just a few examples. The point is the game evolves and favors different things over time. Longtime players should know that. And going "All In" for "What's In" right now is fine but don't be surprised if things change to make that style mediocre. All of us old school DHC guys should know that
Having being hit by plasmaexplosions that oneshot me through full shields, running 50%ish resists.. This is very welcome.
Current meta is noobs and exploiters who lack any skill flying alldmg immunity online.
Sad but yes, the ppl who use alldmg immunity or invincibility ect kill the PVP with their own hands - NOT CRYPTIC its YOU!.
And as a longer PVP player, i can clearly say that even if there are FOTM for less skilled players (like plasma doping was, or lag builds) there are multiple old builds that work perfectly fine still for example:
- tanky dogfighters (with ts3 or bo3),
- BO3 dmg focused escorts,
- fawscorts,
- even vapers to some extend (specially in not 1 on 1 when you know you will be attacked),
- healers,
- sci dmg focused ships,
- partly even cruisers (but they and engineer toons are kinda left a little behind - as even if they can hold their own tank/dmg wise they are to slow).
And no you dont need the most OP escort in game, or most OP sci ship to kill 99% of ppl with similar gear lvl - now mostly alldmg immunity spam decides the matches.
Yes plasma doping was bugged on FAW - did because of it to big crits as it was possible to get from fully buffed 1 proc reaching 10k flat, an 80k crit hits, what would indicate shooter having 800% crit sev (what is impossible).
Yes it was over the top but some older builds still took down most plasma doper boats as they were the epitome of squishyness. Ofcorse the users of it spammed alldmg immunity what made them harder to kill (as you dont pick plasma doping if you have any skill) but still the dmg was tank'able if you were fast and had good res (on escrots even) if you were relatively fast and could hard spike (even possible on cannon type weapons if the plasma doping didnt make enough lag to jam them) - also defensive sets like Kobali or def consoles like Morrigu/battle cruier t6 or kobali console helped with it good.
But all this goes to waste, as ppl just equip 20-30-40s(on pilots) of alldmg immunity and lag builds to agument their lack of any skill in piloting or designing a balanced ship that can stay longer in fight then 5s you kill or die - as as short example i've seen ppl like Stipe on wells ship without any tac boff ability equiping Reciprocity just to increase lags, could name many others similar cases though.
So to sum it up...
You dont need to get the newest TRIBBLE anymore (ship, traits ect), older designes work also very good, but still the only thing that is now dictating pvp is if the player has balls to fly wihtout alldmg immunity or spams it, and ofc there is a different (time based mostly) problem in the game that also can be considered a half meta way...
Its the lag builds. These builds even if mostly inferior in 1 on 1 situations or 2 on 2 ect to normal builds, make such lags that game problmes occur and whole have hard time maily because cannon type weapons and torpedoes (on ts2-3 ability) just dont shoot, making your dps drop off to under 20% in drastic cases.
So no i dont see a reason to montly change a build as most classic works perfeclty fine. If you worked on your ship and learned to fly it your build will probably make it vs most FOTM as the utility and adaptation is mostly decided by player being able to fully utilitize the power of his build. Plasma doping was just a noob pve heroes toy that they exploited ty to bugs and lag it makes for the guy who goes vs it, no one will miss it.
Its enogh that now with new batteries, surgical strikes or lambda pattern the pve type of beams is actually on similar lvl as most pure acc or acc/crtD weapons making it easier for pve ppl to equip for pvp.
To defend vs pre nerf plasma doping v2 you had to have good defence (so evasive chain with eptE was good), and speed to be short time in arc. Also very good vs it was kobali 4pc set or kobali console (with it you could tank them for 1-2 min in perma arc) now they are mostly not even needed to be honest as the nerf hit them hard and they are used now to make lag only.
with 3 allres consoles, omega3, HE1 buffs and kobali 4pc+ console i could fly in 2 vs 1 such plasma builds (like corbins for example) without any alldmg immunity for minutes on my escort while mostly making a kill ty to high burst hit and run way of flying.
About the faw... Geko told it like that, as the devs currently dont understand how it works and last iteration with it ended in braking it. Cryptic doesnt have devs that made the game anymore so till they understand ho faw works, every fix to it is on hold - current geko orders.
And yes the avarage player is partly the fault in the game current state and all this alldmg immunity TRIBBLE. But mostly its the lack of smart governing on cryptic higher tier staff, as its easy to implement map rules ect so pvp maps will balance it out, its just they dont want it for some reason - and they still didnt noticed that there is no big cash cow money bringing MMO without PVP mode.
Most players are good builders, but some never make their own ship. They just copy the numerically most favorable setup and try to crush anybody they run across. Most are aware of the the finer nuances of game mechanics, but some would try to hammer a FBP with DHCs on a continuous basis.
The one thing that is common among all great players is a kind of mastery within themselves that translates into mastery of a game. Winning is not simply about brute force. The desire to overpower an opponent often translates into the uglier side of competition, appearing in the form of abusive behavior, rudeness, and arrogance.
Any player can win if he gets a cloak&dagger sneak attack against an already occupied opponent, if abilities and/or shields of said opponent are already drained. It takes a great player to survive such an attack and even claim victory, despite fighting under disadvantage.
There are many ways to describe various facets of this ability: gear, reflexes, or most often, luck. What is seldom recognized is that good players seem to get lucky more often because of their metagame (minmaxing ist not metagaming, quite the contrary).
First, they build their ship to minimize the impact of the currently favored build (this is metagaming). Second, they play with calm discipline even when things aren't going their way. The distinction might be a fine one, but nevertheless.
As outstanding as those plasma consoles are/were in the damage tables, its not that you couldn't relatively easily build to shrug them off. Its kinda weird when the whole ships is enveloped into blinking plasma explosions and will not give way, but if we are honest its the quite likely consequence of a minmax approach.
Form over function. Play what you like to play, not what a spreadsheet tells you to. You are hurting yourself. Don't do it and you will see your problems evaporate.
