Can anyone tell me how Skill points are allocated on PVE events?

From what I seen it pretty random. Seems you get so much and then afterwards even if you destroy quite a few ships you get nothing for it. Seems that each PVE event only allocates so much skill points. Pretty confusing. Just wondering if I should be focusing on bigger ships like Cruisers or Deadnoughts when on these PVE Mission instead of the smaller ships!
