I was just thinking it'd be cool if Fed Klingons and KDF Klingons got a special bonus for teaming up.
Then it hit me that the same would be true for Vulcans and Romulans. And Vulcans and Humans.
The thing is, a straight combat bonus would either be trivial and would render other things irrelevant; I'd rather it be a progression boost. Meanwhile, there aren't enough other reward systems to promote team-ups between every species combination, even if you have generic boosts for the species that have no normal interaction. And you'd need a same-species boost as well for purists.
Maybe if we had, say... a system called Synergy. Basically, a Synergy would be like a reputation. But no marks or daily projects or specific content assigned to it.
And in addition to teaming up, maybe it could actually treat species relationships as a game mechanic. Like... I don't know, maybe you get "bonus points" as a human for meleeing in front of a Klingon and your progress halts when you use sniper attacks and stealth. Or your progress stops when you crit in front of a Vulcan but you get a boost after a string of hits with no misses. Meanwhile, maybe it's the opposite with a Talaxian: if you don't miss a little bit, they start to distrust you but if you crit, the progress jumps forward again.
Maybe... I can see another way to go with this entirely, not species related at all. But I'd love to see what you think about this first.
