The Fleet Faeht and Fleet Aelahl are very different ships.
The Faeht is much faster turning, Lt. Comm Science for interesting fun with Gravity Well or Destabilized Resonance Beam I/II, has a cloak that lets you fire torps and certain abilities while only decloaking for a second, and is much more capable of putting out the hurt with more Tac consoles and Tac BOff seating and higher Intel seating availability.
Aelahl is tankier with more shields, hull hit points and engineering abilities.
Depends on what your playstyle is and what content you're playing. What do you ships do you use now on your Rom, and on other factions (if you have any non-Rom chars), and what do you like or dislike about them?
I'd go Faeht of those two chioces personally, in anything but Gateway to Grethor (Advanced). In GtGA I've found that the extra base tank ability of cruiser comes in really handy with all the disable spam they put out, and the extra heals you can have loaded can help you recover after getting spammed with probes and Ionic Turbulence.
The Faeht, in short, is essentially a high-powered version of the T'Varo, minus Red Plasma Torp console. She's faster, harder hitting, better turning than the T'Varo. Has the same Enhanced Battle Cloak. More importantly, she's a Full Intel ship with Cmdr TAC/Intel station. You can make the Faeht hit very hard.
The catch with the Faeht is similar to the KDF BOPs and Raiders. Her hull is light and is not forgiving to mistakes. You must know your flying with the Faeht as well as quick emergency escapes, survivability drills, etc. Light hulled ships are not for the inexperienced.
The Aehlal? No. Not really a good choice if you want a "TAC Cruiser" styled Warbird. Yes, it has the solid ENG capability. Yes, it has the LtCdr TAC station. Yes, it moves way better than other Warbirds that do not have Cmdr TAC capability. But the traits are defense oriented. Not good for a TAC Cruiser. Also, Cryptic failed the Aehlal badly with the Fleet version and it did NOT get a 4th TAC Console.
When DR released, I thought the Aehlal to be an excellent ship. But with the Fleet version not having 4 TAC Consoles, I no longer can suggest this ship in good honesty.
The Aehlal had the makings to be a superb TAC Cruiser style of ship. But Cryptic failed.
If you want a TAC Cruiser styled Warbird, the TAC Command FDC is a solid choice for the Romulans. The Fed & KDF versions are hurt badly by not having Weapon System Efficiency Cruiser Command. But since Warbirds don't have Cruiser Commands, this isn't an issue.
As above, get the Vastam for all your tac cruiser warbird needs. The Faeht is like a T'varo on steroids. Pilot warbirds are more well rounded escorts, because of all the bells and whistles they can employ to mitigate damage.
From an engineers stand point the Aelahl is the better choice, with the right console's slotted this ship is hard to kill. This is the better of the intel ships but not the best of the T6 rom ships out their.

Ahh, but stuff an Engineer into a Cmdr TAC station-capable ship, and you give that more fragile ship 2 critical benefits
1. More subsystem power
2. Better survivability
The Escort type vessel in return gives the Engineer a powerful suite of abundant TAC abilities, typically 5 TAC Consoles*, excellent maneuverability. Basically, the Escort gives the Engineer offensive punch, which Engineers typically don't have on their own like Tac & Sci Captains do with their captain abilities.
