what's happened to the players in game??

whats happened to the players in-game? it used to be you could talk to someone "a stranger" in game and get a descent response... nowadays ppl are just as mean and nasty as can be over no reason at all and then they just put you on ignore. some even seem to go out of their to way to TRIBBLE you over or be cruel. i'd chalk this up to just randomness or a person having a bad day and let it go....but it seems to be, more often than not, the players i come into contact with are just nasty and vicious and out to be mean as possible.

i dont understand this at all.

very discouraging.

It's the internet. It's an MMO. They are strangers. Some will be nice, some won't. There's no reason to assume ahead of time either way.

It seems you have had bad luck and encountered wrong players. Sure, there are some nasty players, but in my point of view they are minority. Maybe I'm just lucky?

    Depends on where you're asking.

If you're on ESD, expect insults, rudeness, and random topics.

If you're on Drozana or Risa, expect the same, on top of indecent ERP proposals.

It's only on some starbases, First City, or DS9 that you're more likely to get some casual conversation, and only because they're too out of the way from areas with plenty of conveniences. ESD does have a great layout with multiple Bank and Mail terminals a few steps next to Exchange or Ship Management area, and Drozana has all but the Ship Selector near each other. DS9, the visitable Starbases (fully developed Fleet SB included), and First City have everything scattered about, so players usually have to run around to get to any facility (especially between the shipyard and bank/exchange in First City's case).

If you contact me via private message or mail in game. I will respond and not be all rude and crude. However I DON'T engage in open chat at hubs. I have that rubbish turned off. I don't care to read the junk that comes out. Reminds me of a garbage dump. Nothing but trash.

Most normal players aren't paying attention to general chat these days so the people you interact with are a wretched hive of scum and villainy.

I'm not sure why they should. Do you care about the feelings or emotional state of the jerk? I doubt it.

Is a video game even the place to concern yourself with feelings and emotional states? What happened to escapism?

Very true, since they can hide behind a screen. And be the jerk they want to be. In real they will be a total different person. The screen is nothing but a mask for them. At least in some cases. Others are just jerks in general.

Zone chat is the worst, today on Risa a fleet was giving away free Risa sunglasses and other items and other players were being rude to them about it.

Any idea where on Drozana/Risa someone might find an ERPer? Drozana is a quiet as a church mouse and Risa is full of ESD chatters.

Also, if someone is rude to me then I am more likely to be rude back.

I have had some great experience's from the in game chat window both giving and receiving tips on the game.
you've just got to learn to take no notice of the rude or hurtful comments and keep asking around, if all else fails and you loose patience just come to the forum and ask, you still might get some of the same bad replies but its easier to spot the genuine replies when theres not a load of nonsense flying by.

When I think about everything we've been through together,

maybe it's not the destination that matters, maybe it's the journey,

and if that journey takes a little longer,

so we can do something we all believe in,

I can't think of any place I'd rather be or any people I'd rather be with.

Every person I have personally spoken with in game were really cool. The few that were sour were usually mad that an advanced stf failed. I have seen minor toxicity arise from discussions that attempt to tell another player how they should build a ship, as if there is only one right way.

What you're seeing is what you get when you put a bunch of random people in a free game all together and everyone knows there are absolutely no rules at all.

The rudeness, the comments in zone chat, it all comes down to the fact that Cryptic does not enforce the code of conduct in any way, shape or form. You can literally say anything you can imagine to anyone (or the entire zone) and no matter how horrible or offensive it is, you will never receive any form of punishment. When you add this system of 'anything goes,' you sadly see the worst side of people come out.

When people have free reign to say anything they want from the anonymity of their computer they take full advantage. Honestly, I have played many MMO's and I have never seen one like this where you were allowed to just say or do anything you want. It's the one thing I consider the worst aspect of STO. The first thing I do when I log into game is close my chat window. I already know that everything being said is hateful and offensive.

Add to that it's free to play, and there's nothing stopping just anyone from causing problems.

Dunno about all players, but I'm doing fine, having a blast on Risa. :) (See new sig to wit).

Ironically, the Risa chat crowd tends to be rather rude or outright vulgar. There are some very nice ppl on Risa too (you know, the kind not b*tching about the flag-mechanics and/or blaming Obama :P And helpful to Risa noobs like me).

Actually, come to think of it, the Risa crowd is probably the same as those in ESD chat: only difference being that I routinely keep the latter closed nowadays. :)

Most people arent rude their just on thier way to something, just like in the real world where bosses pusching people hard and were people have to pay bills. Within STO when people get online they have to go fast but now a days there are a lot of young people doing stuff..

And most young people are brute without manners these days just like the real world...

Don’t think too much into it because you know… can’t tell in each case.

It could range from people just being people to a lot of players in STO currently unhappy about the state of the game but not quiet unhappy enough to go elsewhere.

In my experience most players who act in such a fashion either suffer from burn- OR bore-out.

When I’m currently not in PvE queued maps and or in premades pursuing these activities it both happens to me rather quickly in this game. Risa is a nice distraction I do but the 100th hunt is a one way ticked for me to become anyoing for others. I have to be carefull there. :P

Soo much this. I/ve met some of those individuals who even pretend to be new players. But in reality they are runing a scam or just want to troll you and make you waste time if they see you are in a hurry.

I'm sorry to hear about your bad experiences in STO, but I can assure you that not everybody in this game is like that. For instance, the people that talk in zone chat are almost universally bad people. Avoid at all costs. Meanwhile, people in DS9 are... somewhat better, but you still get a few 'bad eggs', so to speak. It's all about where you find the conversation. My advice is to keep at it! Hopefully you'll get lucky.

It's a bad combination of factors:

    1) It's the school holidays, so there are more younger players about, and we all know what the youth of today are like.

    2) It's the internet.

    3) People are ... precious. They like to hoard their information like it's dilithium ore; they could help you, but they feel that you ought to go through the same struggle that they did to get where they are.

    4) They think they're being funny and entertaining to others; that servile desire to please some randoms is really the worst, I think.

People are not fundamentally different on the internet than they are off. Most people don't react well to random questions from passersby on the street, and you shouldn't expect any different just because the street is on a computer screen. Certainly, people in the game are less likely think you're nuts for talking to them, but they also won't be afraid you'll punch them in the face if they shout insults back at you. So your mileage will vary to a great degree.

If you want to talk about a topic, better to find an appropriate channel and ask away.

STO should really have a Newbie channel and new players should be subscribed to that instead of Zone.
