Unfortunatley for us yup yet another one of THESE threads youd think after its been explained like a hundred times people would get the idea well....i suppose i was wrong in that assumption.
Sol and Earth/Terra are on the border (you even said so yourself), so the devs were smart and put it on the side where most beginning gameplay (if not all gameplay) takes place, so that it's more convenient for players.

Most of everything you do in this game will be either in the Beta Quadrant or in the Delta Quadrant. (Minus the Cardassian and Breen/Deferi arcs.) Why would you want Sol in the quadrant where there's nothing to do? :P

That sound is my head banging on my desk. Next time do a search there are TONS of these threads and all of these threads have been responded to by Cryptic and their response is basically "Deal with it"
A: Short answer? Because the writers of Star Trek used "Alpha" as a keyword for home.
In reality (fiction), Sol should be directly on the line between the Alpha and Beta Quadrants
I read this in one of the older threads and thought to myself "whatever". Because they used it as a keyword for home pfffffft. Now if you all will excuse me i'm going to play my Fed science toon, hop into my Tholian ship, and tell my Jem Hadar bridge officer to blow up some borg ships.
For the record since Earth (Sol) is straddling the border between Alpha and Beta, it really didn't matter (too much) where it finally ended up, I'm ok with where it is.
Maybe a few decades of stellar drift moved it just enough to be in the Beta Quadrant? lol :P
This time I support 'another one of these.' Star Trek is intensely human-centric ("We're all human," remember?), so Earth being anywhere else but in the Alpha Quadrant makes no sense at all, as the Alpha Quadrant was named for the first space we encountered (namely, that around us). which we then promptly called the 'ALPHA' (= first/primary/root) Quadrant.
Thus it was recorded in canon. And to have Earth be in the Beta Quadrant therefore is a rather sizeable boo-boo. Fix it; and then feel free to close this thread. :P

Gameplay trumps lore. The vast majority of the early missions are in the Beta quad. Having starting characters have to bounce between the quadrants every time they headed to & from ESD would be silly (and defeat some of the purpose of dropping the map walls to begin with.) So, if there has to be a choice between the two quadrants, Beta it is.
(The more elegant solution, of course, would have been to have an entrance/exit to the Sol system in each quadrant. But I can only imagine the bugs.... :P)

I normally agree, totally. And I've seen ppl leave the game (!) because the Delta Flyer in the show had only 1 Aft wep, instead of 2 (or whatever). That sort of stuff has no meaning to me whatsoever. But the location of Earth?! Kinda basic. Almost immersion breaking (OMG! STO isn't real?!? )

Tacofangs said no, his word is law in this situation. Sol is in the Beta Quadrant, so get used to it or don't, it's up to you. Taco isn't going to change Sol's position based on complaints by some people who don't get the picture.

While we're at it, they should 'fix" the Prime Meridian so that it runs further to the East, maybe the Eastern border of Germany or Poland. I mean we call the countries of Western Europe "the West" or "Western nations" when they are clearly in the Eastern Hemisphere. That's completely immersion breaking.
This is an MMO, not a Star Trek episode simulator. That would make for a terrible game.

And that is his prerogative, of course: their server, their rules. But he's no less in error about Earth's location, though. "That," as Data said to the boy in Hero Worship, "will never change."
Earth is officially located in the Alpha Quadrant, ca. 90 light years from the boundary to the Beta Quadrant.
So, just putting that out there; and then they can do with what they want.
N.B. And if this ever becomes a F.C.T., I wouldn't mind a link to Taco's post in there.
I've left myself a note to add it to the FCT friday as that's my next day off.
/closed as this has been brought up a lot.

But Taco replied: http://sto-forum.perfectworld.com/showpost.php?p=23518171&postcount=83
And even after this thread gets closed...more of them will continue to pop up.
Can one of the mods add this to the FCT's???

This would be a very good idea.
I really wish people would use the search on these forums.
You're definitely the first to notice this, it's a good thing you made this thread to bring it to everyone's attention!

Please Moderators add this topic to the FCT.

No, I was trying to get them to *fix* it, and then close the thread. :P

Well that escalated quickly

Okay, here is the long winded version of the Why Earth is in Beta and why the maps look as they do.
