The Children of the Son were a minority religion emerging on Magna Roma in the mid-23rd century, very similar to Earth's early Christians, who often lived in hiding from the Roman government. Unlike on Earth, the religion started to spread in their equivalent of the 20th century. The religion centered on the Son, an analogue to Christ. Their philosophy is referred to as the "word of the Son", and emphasizes love and brotherhood. All Humanoids are considered breathren, and might even call themselves or others such. They have a concept of heaven, which is where the Son is.
The Children of the Sun were heavily persecuted. One adherent named Septimus was a senator, but was made a slave upon converting. The religion was very popular among the slaves, and when slaves began to worship the Son they became discontented. Spock believed the Children of the Son were destined to replace Roman culture in less than a century.
In 2260, the SS Beagle received a meteorite impact and was damaged, leading to a crash on Magna Roma
Magna Roma has been cited as an example of Hodgkin's Law of Parallel Planetary Development as it developed a parallel Empire. And has been theorized that the planet was populated by the descendants of Earth Romans that were placed on Magna Roma by the Preservers.
In 2365, Magna Roma had become a member of the United Federation of Planets. Magna Roma's fleet "Children of the Son", operates independent but in concert with Star Fleet. Utilizing Federations Technology and Ship designs.
They are also known for there Diplomatic efforts and are often referred to as "Peace makers". While generally peacefully they have at times strained there relations with the Federation for becoming involved in the affairs of other planets. Most specifically becoming embroiled in revolutions where inequality, slavery, tyranny and oppression of the weak are being fought against.
They have strong diplomatic ties with Bajor and New Romulus. After the loss of the Romulan home world many reunificationist resettled to Magna Roma due to its similarity in culture with the Romulans. The Romulan Republic has been sharing technology and ship designs with Magna Roma. Due to the Spiritual nature of its inhabitants there has been a small settlement established by Vulcans on the planet who wish to study the culture and observe the Romulans who have converted to the philosophy of the "word of the Son"
