The only bits of advice I can offer you when you eventually play STO is to take your time. Don't rush through the levels. Be prepared to learn a lot of stuff (The STO Academy forum is a good place to start). Experiment with your crew setup, your ships, your weapons, your difficulty settings.
Since your initial post was two days ago, I assume that you've created your first character and are playing the game right now! If so, my best advice I can give is to simply HAVE FUN!!!
If you want to play as a tank, get consoles that increase your shields hit points and shield power, usually science consoles. You also need to select traits that improve your ship's defense.
Type your question into Zone chat at anytime and someone will always answer. (Can't guarantee it'll be particularly helpful, but there will be a response to your question)
I started actually playing this game in July 2012, and what I did was come onto this forum and went into "The Academy" blog and read up on everything that I needed to help me in the early going. I found the STO Wiki to be extremely helpful, too.
I mostly play solo, but being in a fleet will help you the most, because it provides you access to some great gear well before you reach Level 50.
Well, that's all I have for now. I hope you enjoy your STO experience, and I hope you go and start watching the various Star Trek series available. I'm a Hulu-plus member, and I'm watching ST:The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, and Voyager all free of charge. Hope to see ya in-game!
1 - It's a SF game. There are not that many available. Although there are references to TV shows and movies, you can do without. If it's fun? Well, that depends on you. I don't know what is fun for you.
2 - Fedearation is the best developed faction: outfits, ships, ... almost anything is in higher stock than the other factions. But KDF (Klingons) and Romulans got their own storyline (partly). Just that Romulans have to join one of the other factions around level 10. So it's 2 and a half factions. I'll suggest you do Fed first, then KDF and finally Romulans.
3 - All missions are designed for soloplay. PvP and the STF are done with groups. Mostly. Just go ahead. An Engineer IS the tank in this game. A Tactician is the damage dealer. A Science guy does the buffs. (More or less at least)
4 - There are lots of fleets available. But you have to search one the suits YOU.
5 - They are children of Cryptic and they are sharing at least the account servers. So you might find some similarities. But you will find differences as well.
