A little lag survey...

OK, so the issue of lag has been discussed many times before, but to try to understand the scope of the problem a little bit better, please answer the following questions:

1) How often do you experience lag in STO? *vote here*

2) When you do experience lag, how long does it usually last? *vote here*

3) In what type of gameplay circumstance do you normally experience lag? *vote here*

4) When you experience lag, do you have any internet issues outside of STO? That is to say, if you open an internet browser can you browse normally? *vote here*

Beyond simply voting, please explain your issues in greater detail if you like.

I experience it if I play ISA. I no longer play ISA because of it. It's really quite awful there.

Also, the game runs "wonky" in the dyson space area and the klingon academy. I wouldn't describe this as lag - rather slightly lowered framerate maybe. Does not really affect gameplay. And by swiching to lower population instance of the academy it is slightly better.

Otherwise I have experienced no problems.

I think I've had lag once in the last month, playing Gates of Grethor. Rest of the time it's butter smooth.

Might be worth people listing what region they're in and what provider they use. For me it's London/Sky Broadband.

Yes, the game lags. I am sure everybody is aware of it at this point.

Every time I attempt to play a queued event it becomes the lag Olympics.

I play on the Mac version (because I'm too lazy to start up windows :P) and even with graphics mostly set at near minimum levels, the lag is terrible. It seems to come from rendering textures and all of that. The Dyson sphere (all areas), space maps in the Delta Quadrant with the fancy backgrounds, looking at the waterfall on ESD, and nearly unplayable levels in that one ground mission in the Klingon War arc where you beam down to a planet and rescue the researches (the ground part) are the worst places for me. I still lag everywhere else, it's just worse.

Yes, in many of the delta systems with fancy backgrounds it is a flipbook for me. Though it has always been like that. It's down to my video card since my friend plays it fine here with the same internet connection and a top video card.

While I forget if Polls are allowed, I cast my votes all the same.

Really not sure what to make of it - I'll get it in group content or solo missions on newbie characters without any traits/etc. or just while trying to slot doff missions. It comes, it goes, often end up losing activation of various abilities in the process at critical times.

My Armitage has died more times to unimatrix ships in red alerts than I care to admit as of late - usually by proxity of Anchored's resistance penalty and the lag preventing me from reacting to torp salvos that crit 9 times out of 10. (The anchored buff/debuff is really slow to clear with all the lag as well - can usually be at full impulse for 5-10 seconds before it clears.)

Either way, It's pretty obvious how the rampant 'feature creep' has really hammered the server with all the calculations now.

OK, so the issue of lag has been discussed many times before, but to try to understand the scope of the problem a little bit better, please answer the following questions:

    1) How often do you experience lag in STO? (Usually very rarely, but the lag was terrible today. See below.)

    2) When you do experience lag, how long does it usually last? (Usually not a problem, but today it was the entire time that I played STO.)

    3) In what type of gameplay circumstance do you normally experience lag? (Lag was present in all maps but was particularly bad in group PVE queues.)

    4) When you experience lag, do you have any internet issues outside of STO? That is to say, if you open an internet browser can you browse normally? (No problems. However, I usually don't browse the internet while playing STO.)

Today was the first time in about 5 months that I experienced SEVERE lag and "rubber banding" that made STO essentially UNPLAYABLE ... particularly in group pve queues.

I normally play STO on my desktop rig with a hardwired Ethernet LAN connection to a quality Gigabit router. Again, with that setup I haven't had severe lag or rubber banding in months. However, today I needed to hang out in another room in my house to watch my sick dog and take him outside frequently. I was using my gaming notebook rig connected with a 5GHz Wi-Fi connection.

As soon as I logged in and visited ESD today I noticed some minor lag and rubber banding (where your character or ship will suddenly "snap back" to where you were several seconds earlier ... as if you are stuck in a temporal paradox where you keep repeating the last few seconds.)

When I joined my PVE queues to grind reputation I discovered that the lag and rubber banding was MUCH worse. In the "Gateway to Gre'thor" event I not only found myself repeatedly rubber banding during the event/match, but every time my ship rubber banded the game "reversed" everything that I had done ... except my cool downs.

This made it extremely difficult to destroy the Iconian/Herald ships because I would fire weapons and see the damage happen to the enemy ships ... but then my ship would "snap back" to several seconds prior and the enemy ships would be healed as if I never attacked them ... but all my attacks/BOFF abilities would be on cool down since I used them.

Similarly, if the enemy ships started to attack me and cause damage then I would use my shield heal and hull heal abilities ... but then I'd snap back several seconds, my heals would be undone, my healing abilities would be on cool down, and the enemy ships would kill me.

I normally don't have to respawn in any PVE queue unless I do something stupid, but today I had to respawn on every PVE queue (ground and space) multiple times because of the lag and rubber banding.

I've run multiple speed tests since experiencing problems on my laptop today and my Wi-Fi is performing flawlessly, but there is clearly something going on with the way in which the STO server responds to systems connected over wireless.

To confirm, I went to check how STO played on my hardwired desktop just before typing this and there was no lag or rubber banding. Then I logged in with my laptop over Wi-Fi and the lag/rubber banding was there again.

I'm doubt that everyone who has reported lag/rubber banding has the same problem as me, but I wanted to type up a response based on what I experienced, observed, and was able to repeat with my admittedly amateur trouble shooting.
In the immortal words of Captain Sisko: "It may not be what you believe, but that doesn't make it wrong."

Don't believe the lies in this forum. I am NOT an ARC user. I play STO on Steam or not at all.

In the past pre-DR, never had any lag, never heard of or experienced rubberbanding. Game ran perfect, no disconnects or crashes, minus constant unrelenting horrendous lag on all tray/boff abilities both space and ground. The latter persists today, the fight with the tray never ends, abilities fail to activate, have to baby every mouse click over and over and over and over and.............................. CLICK..............(nothing)........CLICK CLICK (NOTHING)...click..activate 5 sec too late, repeat x 9^999999.

Federation/Klingon Fleet Alert, stopped playing it for months now. Lag sometimes is of slideshow proportions, other times minor, too unpredictable, not worth motion sickness, frustration, and failures, yes failures on normal difficulty.

ISA, used to be fine, now it's random rubberbanding, other times no lag, varies.

Social zones, rarely, but again varies, sometimes lots of bursts of rubberbanding making it hard to walk forward.

Single player missions by myself while leveling 2 delta recruits, no lag.

Sector space, usually no lag, sometimes bursts of lag of short duration.

Having a hard time finding players to team up with. Some report "I'd join ISA but lag."

Fix Tray Abilities. Fix Lag. Fix random graphics card crashes, and make them priorities.

I completed the survey, however, I figure it would be best to provide a little bit of info as well.

First, I have not played STO since April 29th, 2015 because I have decided to take a break and wanted to replay an old favorite game of mine; Morrowind. By far the best RPG fantasy game (in my opinion) I have played with some mods to spruce up the graphics, animation and sound.

    Anywaste....

Most of the lag I have experience, which I consider to be affecting my fun, has happened after Season 10 went live. Yes, I have the occasional lag (a few seconds) and texture pops on ESD since ESD was revamped, but that is something I can live with and does not really bother me at all. The lag only happens when playing the queued PvE missions that takes place in space with absolutely no issues for ground missions. If I experienced lag in team PvE space missions before Season 10, then I cannot remember when that happened.

The lag in space team PvE missions mostly happens for several seconds, then it stop for several seconds and it starts again. Only a few times was the throughout the entire mission and that only happened in ISA. Since I have been playing team PvE space missions on a daily basis, I have been experiencing lag on a daily basis since the release of Season 10.

I have a laptop right next to my PC which I use to do so personal research on the side / moderate an IT forum from time to time. During times when I experienced lag in STO I decided to playback 1080p videos on Youtube to see if it could be my ISP. The videos play back fine without any issues.

Hopefully by the time I decide to switch between STO and Morrowind every other day the lag issue will have improved.

not sure what relevance you stating that had at all. peeps need to let the mods do their job, and not agitate anyone by being the hall monitor..

that being said, I experience lag quite frequently. I have experienced it for the most part (though its up in down with severity throughout the year).

I have a high end gaming rig, no other game lags, I have high frame rates when the game doesn't crash.. I have Verizon fios 100 up and 100 down speeds so way more than what I need. I live near boston, so im sure its cogent, you know, the company that has yet to actually do a good job and cryptic keeps using.. its like a person who is being physically abused by their significant other, and keeps going back to them instead of leaving.. uggg.. /facepalm lol...

I notice it more when I play in grouped missions and queues, but the lag and rubber banding will rear its ugly head randomly through all game play types..

and no, when I start to get too much lag and I see its sticking around, I log and go do something else, or play another game..

lags happens to me from time to time - depends on timeframe I try to play - although over last phew weeks it got much better than it was at the beginning of delta recruitment event.

the only "rubberbanding" that ever happened to me was back then at the beginning of the delta recruitment when playing my deltie at drozdana station.....

but in last phew weeks is molstly randomly 1-2seconds of something lagged
(skill fired later mob "jumped" a little this kind of stuff - nearly never happened more than once in a run...

I have been having FPS drops in the dyson areas when the energy umbrellas are in view. 4 or 5 FPS. 15 to 25 when they are not.

In the Delta maps like the one with the APUs Grind my pc to a halt.

The UI eats 20-30 frames by itself.

Not wanting to troll this post but in my humble opinion this is a bit of a biaised poll dont you think?

    In this link:

    http://strawpoll.me/4326632

    It says:

    -Daily

    -Weekly

    -Monthly

    -Rarely

But...hmmm...where is a clickable box for NEVER?

Yeah i get it people lag,but you also have players like me that dont suffer of any lag or rubberbanding ingame.
If you would have proposed this survey with the apropiate wording i wouldnt have bothered to reply, but since you didnt specify that it was ONLY for people with ingame problems i felt in the need to call out and have my voice heard as well you know one of the thousand of players that dont have any issues with the game.
Should have written something like this so the thread would have been aimed at people that DO have issues with the game:

"This survey is ONLY for players that have issues with the game such as lag, rubberbanding and random disconnections"

P.S:Yesterday got scared...logged in and i was laggin and rubberbanding all over the place then i realised i had UTorrent open hehe

I doubt there is anyone who has suffered no lag.. if you played during lor, you suffered lag, as the servers took a dump, and cryptic did say that lag was a huge issue due to it..

I for one think that people who claim to never ever have lag are either not understanding what all the forms of lag are, or are lying, as lor was terrible for just about everyone for a month or more. and that is one of many examples of times when the servers had a stroke and cause a multitude of problems..
