I love this forum as it has afforded a ton of valuable STO information. Of course with STO their is always something new to learn. With that in mind, I was hoping y'all could help me out with answers to a few questions.
1) I am currently only level 36. Last night I played the SOL system Iconian episode where the preserver archive was destroyed. Until that point I have played content ordered by assignment. Firstly, I have not met the preservers yet. I'm assuming they are introduced in a later episode. Second the reward items were MK VI. So my question is should I avoid playing new content until after playing episodes released prior to season 10? It feels like jumping to the end of the book, not to mention missing out on very rare gear that I assume scales with level.
2) I keep reading that it is possible to train bridge officers of the same class in new skills but cannot fathom how to do it?
3) I still have my original BoF's. Is this a bad thing? Does BoF rarity make a big difference. If it does, what is the cheapest way to replace them. I have promoted my officer and bought training manuals, which is a waste.
4) Is melee combat an option. If it is, what traits/gear support melee combat.
1) The featured episodes exists after the normal progression in story episodes. Gear does not scale with level in the traditional sense but mission rewards do, so that MK VI will turn into MK XII if played at the highest level.
2) Bridge officers are not trained by modules either bought from vendors, the exchange or in the case of higher tier abilities crafted yourself
3) Original boffs are okay to use, the exchange probably is probably the cheapest way right now but the romulan bridge officers bought from your fleet have the best trait in the game (superior romulan operative) IMO anyway.
4) Melee is indeed an option, tactical officers are the best for this and i recommend the lunge kit module for closing the distance
Hope this helps and if im wrong anyone else please feel free to correct me, AFAIK this is all correct

Yes, the preservers are part of the Breen storyline (I think).
IMO, you can run those missions now and get decent free gear to help you along with the rest of the missions and then upgrade them, or wait until you've hit lvl 50 and run them again for higher level gear

You train BOFFs by buying training manuals or turning a BOFF that you've received from a mission/DOFF mission into a manual, then go to the skills tab for that BOFF and click on the skill level button (usually filled in with default skills) and the list of skills available for that slot are listed below. The trainable skill (the one you bought/created) will have a "train" button to click. Do that and he/she is trained.

BOFF rarity does usually makes a difference.
At level 36, the originals are still good, but you could always buy better. You can find better through DOFF missions too if you're lucky to find those missions.
Personally, I've left my original DOFFs (on my DR recruits) alone... I might find a similar BOFF in a higher level and customize/rename to match and existing one or just find new favorites.

Thanks!
Melee is an option. It's a rough one though (IMO). I've been trying to do it on two DR's now and find that being one of the cat races helps with the "pounce" trait long with using swords. The swords attack will "lunge" you towards a bad guy without using a skill. I've got one an engineer and one a tactical. I think both have merits. Especially when you can beam in support in the form of drones and targets for the Eng and security teams for the Tac.

I'm going to explore melee. Just seems like a fun option for a tactical officer.
