I have run this mission so many times, and wining or failing seems to be random - or I simply dont get it.
I do understand that you have to get the optionals before you activate the devices, but the 3rd wave is beyond me...
We had the case that we solved the targ bit, and failed the orion, but the mission itself didnt fail. Than the other day we did the same, but the whole mission failed suddenly. We kinda found out that the optional seems to change, sometimes targ, sometimes orion. But the weird thing is, that it showed the orion as optional for me, and the targs were optionals for team members. Hows that possible??
And everyone seems to have an own theory what to do... some say not to touch the orion at all and just do targ, others say that the orion must be activated but can die than, or that you have to activate the main-device, than activate orion and than quickly the other two devices...what the??
so, is this mission bugged or something? what is the trick?

I think with this mission, you need teamspeak if you have it, and a co-ordinated fleet team.
PUGs basically are useless, as players go all over the place and ignore advice.
To me all 3 levels of brotherhood are far too difficult because of this, and also because the heralds weaponry is far too powerful.
What would help alittle is if the devices were in fixed positions all the time, and that the 15 second timer be removed.

well, on normal I can one-shot kill that defiler guys with an overcharged plasma sniper, and on advanced it needs a few shots more, so they are not realy powerful... that herald ones die like flys anyway. but thats not the topic here... Im just talking about how to solve the optional on stage 3. and I am also not PUGing, Im talking about a coordinated team...the question what we have to do.

When I pug I pug on normal. With fleet mates, and Im not talking about a hight DPS group or anything, advanced is fairly doable (and didnt even felt harder than normal).
I dont know if this mission is more about strategy or rather about situational awareness.
The way I see it we have 4 stages we approach one after the other so one step at the time.
On every stage there is a center device as well as 4 possible locations (always the same) where 2 of the secondary devises will appear (not always the same).
My general approach to this map is stay where everybody else is NOT. In doing so I can cover 2 of the 4 locations by myself and basically get them right on first try on every toon I play.
So my suggestion to win this
1) Move in and clear center mob.
2) Go to 1-2 likeliness location of secondary devices (in between spots) and wait for other teammate to activate centre (even pugs get the centre activation part right)
3) If another team-mate is already there, move to other location. If another team mate wants to join at your spot constantly hit kye 3 signalling a melee attack on him displaying your displeasure that he stands in close proximity to you.
4) Verify position of secondary devises and locate yourself at free spot.
But whatever you do if you location is not already occupied STAY THERE AND HOLD. Reason is that then FOUR other players only have to cover 66% of an area while you alone cover 33% granting a high chance of success (at least in my case).
This mission is fun and simple and (lol) works without team speak (man). The problem is it also has the habit of aggravating me, more than anything else I have ever played. Reason is that the stupidity of people tend to surface here best.

For advanced, you can fail the optional objective. There's a 50/50 chance the operative will be optional.
If the operative is not optional (if rescuing the targs is optional), then once the initial mobs are cleared, before activating the tech thing, you need to first heal the operative, then interact to escort him to a nearby safe house.
You need to heal him because he will likely (always?) start at 0 health, and instantly dies if you fail to first heal him before interacting. Medical Nanite Cloud, the trait from tier 5 Omega rep, can be used to heal him (you may need to have him targeted first for it to work).
The minimap quest hud tracker for the destination is tiny; when you first enter the area, the operative is found to your left, with the safe house ahead of you. This puts it up the ramp off to your left when you emerge from healing and then interacting with the operative.
If he doesn't reach the safe house, you fail. You'll also fail if he dies along the way. It's best to wait until he reaches the safe house before activating the tech thing.
On Advanced, at least, it's a 50/50 chance that the operative will be optional, and you're likely to complete the mission. On Elite, both of the secondary objectives in phases 2 and 3 are mandatory.

My pug-success-quota is >90%. Sometimes the problem is not the mission, but the ones playing it
As for the OP: Watch the Quest-Window, the mandatories and optionals in are 2 and 3 arent fixed. So sometimes the mandatory is the targs, sometimes its the orion. Especially the orion spawns near a mob, which immediately attacks him. After clearing the mob, you have to heal him (in worst case, he has 0 HP, and upon interacting, he instantly dies).
