Given that anyone can be a privateer, pirate, mercenary, and so on..but if this game had borders, then I would say that this would be a good new faction, but since every player is pretty much this anyways not matter what allignment in terms of endgame. However, if we say from 0-40, that this new non-aligned faction has its own set of missions in another part of the galaxy let's say the on the opposite region of the Ferengi-Federation-Klingon border area to a relatively unknown area of Star Trek. Who knows, the Ferengi could be the dominant power in those places.
old news. this type of thing with different professions and factions were discussed before and as usual nothing ever came of it. it wont happen.
There are other things that got a similar reaction, like playable Romulans, sector space without borders, raising the level cap etc... and eventually they happened.
So just because you can't imagine it, doesn't mean it won't happen...
In the original STCCG until the second or third expansion, anyone who wasn't Fed, Klingon, or Romulan was in a gold colored "Non-Aligned" faction. This included Ferengi, Cardassians, everyone. And cards of characters and ships of this faction could freely work with any mix of Fed/Klingon/Romulan cards.
Because of the way mission work in STO, you'd need a BIT more structure than that but I could see something LIKE this where you have, say, Chalnoth Space, which exists in a state of IMPOSED anarchy. The Chalnoth patrol, maintaining the chaos of the region and preventing any government from forming without imposing any rules, except that law and government are forbidden.
Such a region could be home to any number of species and a questline could follow inhabitants from this region's entry into the war, perhaps cutting a few deals with the Dominion, Ferengi, Tal Shiar, Breen, Remans, and Cardassians along the way.
Maybe you help supply the Tal Shiar with the contraband weapons that Obisek steals, feed the Breen information on the Deferi, and act as a rogue captain who starts to question their state of affairs and picks a side to align with. It could basically have a leveling arc that fills in the remaining details that act as a prequel to the current state of affairs. You are the captain who perhaps provided the Azura with its cargo, who was assisting B'vat, etc. Until you ultimately realize the cost of your actions.
Within this could be rogue crews of Cardassians, Ferengi merchants, etc.
even if you got your wish, it would be another minifaction, it screams minifaction and in the end it would the same thing as the RR, youd still be in combat and doing the same thing, i frankly cant see the point in a rogue/pirate/privateer crew that ends up taking orders from tuvok when the storyline is over, or one of the two officers as contact point in the delta quadrant (fed and kdf) amd then taking orders from kagren, quinn and paris.

clearly you do not understand, but thats alright. this game is about war and destruction, the romulans were bought into the game because they are the 3rd largest military power in the beta quadrant and because they have been around from the beginning pretty much. it was a no brainer.
now how would you expect a civilian faction to work on a game full of combat? as i stated, its been discussed before and it went nowhere.
T6 Miranda Hero Ship FTW. Been around since Dec 2010 on STO and bought LTS in Apr 2013 for STO.

That...never actually happened. Sector Space without borders was only a technological hurdle that Cryptic had been working on for a long while, playable Romulans were a no brainer cuz it's just a Vulcan model and raising the cap is not even difficult.
A civilian faction, however, has no real practical use as it does not adhere to the action orientation of the game, nor has any real purpose thanks to the DOFF system essentially doing all of those missions for a player with greater rewards.
Also, it doesn't really make sense lore wise, as the Ferengi would just buy a trader faction outright.

I don't know about this working as whole new Faction, BUT it could work as a new Career Path within current/future Factions.

Profit is in the wind... and so there were traders of commerce from every warp capable planet. They have lways existed and started most if not all of the interplanetary conflicts because of greed. If the world of combat represents the muscles then commerce represents the skeletal structure.
The commerce faction needs to be its own faction and not a minifaction. They should not answer to Starfleet or the Empire but have thier own contacts. Alliances are always shifting and are tough to maintain so the trader's guild has to have diplomacy at the forefront.Who knows this could even include the Maquis remenants and other disenfranchised groups like the Royal Star Navy or True Way. The opportunities would be limitless.
Bottom line there is more than one way to earn experience. A successful trading mission should give as much XP as doing a combat mission. Because there would be a distinct chance for failure as these may be logic puzzles or even be random chance of success.
This also gives the Devs new tools to build up a network for Section 31 spy missions. Taking the opportunity to explore the Delta quadrant properly means a ton of first contact missions. But hey aren't there other unexplored regions of space? Last time I checked Star Trek was all about exploration.

Agreed, I just don't understand why people deliberately try to shoot down the ideas of other posters. Lots of good ideas are shot down multiple times by scoffers before they are accepted...
I agree. This was part of the TOS CIA programming. In the future you could only do ANYTHING as part of the government. The only independent guy was Harvey Mudd and he was demonized. New World Order programming. Roddenberry worked for the CIA and a lot of the plots of the TOS were a
soft disclosure of reality.

This could be cool if it they could create it as a type of mercenary faction... You could in essence be "factionless" and have access to all the missions. Somewhat like a universal faction...
Once the governments collapse due to sheer incompetence (seriously nobody thought to ask the preservers about the iconians BEFORE the iconians showed up and blew them all away???) it would make sense for a mercenary type faction to be developed.
Unfortunately I doubt they're going to do such a thing, but it would in fact be pretty cool!
Well given that from the Romulan mystery on, everything, KDF included, plays these from the Federations point of view.

Government only works if there is someone paying taxes.
I would create a true ferengi character, kit him out with an energy whip, buy the ferengi maraurder, get all the ferengi consoles.
He would be a badass ferengi like in TNG of old.

All I can say is....
Where's that Federation Intelligence at now?
And this would fit so nicely with a privateer faction.
