Walking paths in STO

So I had suggested some time ago the idea of being able to select destinations on a ground social map and have your character automatically follow a low-speed walking path to that destination while you manage inventory/DOffing/etc with your character animated as looking down at a PADD and walking.

I believe the response from the community was that this recalls how real people are walking around with their noses buried in their cellphones and more than one person said they hoped the future would be better than that.

Well... Welcome to the future:

German scientists are working on real life "autopilot" for pedestrians.

Pfeiffer hopes this technology will help people appreciate the scenery by making them look up from their damned phones. Rather than walking around hunched over, pinching and pulling at their screen-based maps, they’d be free to—gasp!—look up, knowing that the marvel of modern technology will guide them along. (Alas, when freed from the responsibility of navigating, Pfeiffer says most of his volunteers wanted to check email as they walked.)

This part made me laugh so loud I had to show the article to a co worker.

Umm, there are far better things to do with one's life.

But not so many more entertaining things to do with other people's bodies. I mean seriously, just imagine the possibilities when this first goes live and promptly gets TRIBBLE. I predict a whole lot of texting/emailing peeps will be falling into fountains and rivers and hedges etc.
