My Delta Recruit (General Kraan) is a TOS Klingon, and as such has kept his T3 K't'inga- skinned-as-a-D7; I can't justify shelling out for a Fleet T5U version on an alt whose long term future is uncertain.
What has pleasantly surprised me is how viable this has proven to be. Granted, I'm only playing on normal - mainly because I don't want to spend buckets of Dil / EC on gearing this character up further for the sake of it - but having just finished the Borg arc last night at L55, the ship is holding up amazingly well. The main problem seems to be getting oneshotted by borg plasma torps and killed by warp core breaches.
However, with 4 forward weapon slots and some loaned Mk XIV DBBs, the K't'inga is generally holding its own; mentally, it's got the same forward firepower as a T5U Galaxy.
So - not bad at all for an old ship. No wonder they've been in service from Archer's era to the present...
One of the best ships in the game.. working with BOPs in PvP KDF players utterly dominated PvP during the first year of the game.. They Nerfed BOP's, we still dominated.. Gave the Fed players half again as many ships as we had and then gave them more... we still dominated.
It wasn't untill Fed v Fed PvP was put in..it's was shutting a door. PvP KDF side pretty much ceased.
They...hrmm...what's the way to put it...they compromised the ship to make it available at T5. Sure, sure, you can fly it...but! And it's a pretty big but, imho. Still, when folks talk iconic KDF ship - I don't think BoP...I think D-7/et al.

I remember flying the mighty K'tinga in PvP back in the day when it was a thing at low levels and getting top damage with it frequently. I met my first fleet by flying the hell out of that ship... it was glorious.

If boffs, weapon slots, and tac consoles were all that mattered, then why bother rolling in anything but a Scimitar. The K't'inga doesn't have the greatest of DPS layouts, or even a great layout, but its not like its a T5 Galaxy.
And there's always the potential of a T6 K't'inga...

Yup. The D-7/ K't'inga made an appearance in every series save Ent, and a couple movies as well. Its the iconic Klingon ship, but I'll give a pass to the Negh'tev this round just for looking so great.

Klingons (and their allied species) were made to dominate pvp. That's just the way it is. So I feel KDF side ships have a much longer shelf life through the levels than Fed ships do.
Which is good since we have so many fewer choices.
The Hegh'ta Bird-of-Prey still holds up pretty well too in the later game. Which just tells you how awesome some of the KDF ships really are -- even after years of changes.
I left the game for awhile and came back.. and still I think Klingon ships are amazing.
I fly a Fleet T5-U K'tinga at end game. My absolute favorite ship. Mk XIV Epic everything. Hull is near 77K. Shield facings are near 26K. Turn rate is great. I've got it set up as a disruptor beam boat, no torpedoes. Great ship!
