I am in the market for a desktop. It will probably have to be a custom build so what graphics card is the absolute best for this game? Are there any tricks to lowering the UI lag?
Supposedly since this game has the "Nvidia: The way it's meant to be played" logo, one can only assume it runs better on nvidia cards compared to AMD cards.
Which nvidia graphics card has the best performance? That would supposedly be the most expensive one that was recently released. That would be the nVidia Titan X which sells for approximately $1,000 USD.
I'm running just fine with no graphics card at all; I'm using the on-chip Intel Integrated graphics in my i3 CPU. I'm running near-max settings across the board, and I have no more lag than when I had an ATI-chip GPU. I bought the Intel CPU specifically to economize, but I can always add a PCIe card later if I come into some cash...

It's going to get into a mix of both the GPU and CPU for various things. It's also going to get into what you're looking to do...heh, "it depends"...and so forth. So like folks mentioned, perhaps a better framed question, eh? What monitor or monitors you're looking to drive and all the rest sort of thing...
And for folks that might have an AMD/ATI preference...there's this thread to keep in mind:
The change worked pretty well for me to get rid of the issues for the most part. Polarize Hull still causes all sorts of heinous blocks.
Course, I didn't make the change over on Tribble and lol...downright brutal. Sometimes looks like an old scrambler thing where they run the random blocks over somebody's face to hide their identity...meh.
You'll get lots of 'this is best'. Some of them are right, from a performace as the only god perspective. But if you go here, and follow the sidebar'd directions, you'll get the whole pc build, one that's balanced, works together, does what you want, and is within your budget.
This is like asking 'what last engineering console is best for my ship' without me knowing anything other than that you're an Engineer. I have no clue what the rest of your ship is, what your in-game budget is, or anything else. Go get the whole ship build.

this game engine is not really optimized for graphical performance, you find wild variations over each gamers computer when it comes to sto. i still have a reasonably good computer, not top of the range but more a solid mid-range computer, in places like sb24, it stutters like mad despite having the specifications that i could run this game on max 3x over without issues.
T6 Miranda Hero Ship FTW. Been around since Dec 2010 on STO and bought LTS in Apr 2013 for STO.
in any event, im waiting on dx12 to come and the next generation graphics cards with dx12 support. at that point it wouldnt matter which card manufacturer i choose, both will be compatible to each other in dual mode due to the limitations on that end being removed. i hope its fully true though.

Yep, I was running at 1920x1080 (using a 32" LCD TV as a monitor), with everything set to max on an R9 280X Twin Frozr ($300-$350 card) and never experienced frame rate issues...
I have however seen people running STO quite nicely on laptops with pretty basic on board graphics, just need to turn some of the settings down...

You don't need a $900.00 Titan 3rd - 5th down on the list will be more than enough.
Consider two cards if looking to do dual 4k monitors.
Limitless budget? Nvidia Titan X.

Fleet Admiral Stowe - Dominion War Vet.
Not even kidding... those Fleet battles with alll sorts of NPCS hogging the screen, performance drops like crazy at max settings in 4K
