Purchasing decisions - Iconic Bundle vs Command ships.

What with all the..... "commotion" over in the iconic ships thread, I thought Id come here for you chaps yoda like jedi wisdom, cos Ive had a ton of good advice here over the years.

My question is, which is the better purchase: The command ships or the iconic ships. Ill probably wait for the net ship sale, but will only be able to afford one in all likelyihood.

..............................................................................................................................

I'm leaning towards command at the moment. To me the advantages of command boil down to all hands on deck, a hangar bay, inspiration mechanic, great console set, more turn and 4 tac consoles (not such a biggie but worth mentioning).

If I got this bundle, Id probably fly the tac and sci variants, but gut the others for their consoles and traits.

On the other hand, the iconic ships have an extra LtC level power (as they have two LTCs after their Com Eng slot), about 7% more hull and look mighty awesome.

If only the iconics got a 4th sci or tac console at fleet level, and had a decent trait itd be a no-brainer. I dont even use RSP anymore, and even if I did All Hands on Deck seems massively superior.

Im just not sure, so any advice would enormously helpful.

It depends on what you want to do, but the Command ships (most notably the Presidio-class) have the advantage on stats. They have a hangar, the inspiration abilities and better turn rate. The Presidio starship trait appears to be better also.

The Iconic ships have the appeal of being better looking and being actual ships from the shows. They also have access to higher Command abilities.

If I was looking for ships with better stats, I would get the Presidio class. If I was nostalgic for STNG I would get the Andromeda class. As I am both, I already have the Presidio and I'll be getting the Andromeda.

    Hopefully this helps you ;)

another factor to think about is,

with the iconic ships, if you have multiple toons, across multiple factions, then theres a vote for the iconic 3 pack

if your mostly 1 faction, as a main toon, then I would say command bundle (cause you dont get any bonus for having 2 other faction iconic ships with no bonuses to relay over to your main toon:( )

the command bundle bought with a romulan has the most flex, as you could us it for either fed aligned or klink aligned roms.. more bang for the buck sort of thing

my guess is your fed, so I would say pass on the galaxy, get the 3 command ships and by the way try out some different builds on them, they are a very flexible group of ships that can handle a ton of different approaches to combat, everything from high dps, healboat, even a touch of disable

between having all 3, allows you to have truly 3 different experiences with just one character alone with each ship is built differently

also, if your a tac, dont be afraid to create her as a healer- tac fleet is still a great team buff, if in pvp your the mvp by far for the team to win the match, if in pve- you can always look for those escorts and warbirds that are pumping out tons of damage (and getting the agro for it) and pass them heals so they can focus on cutting through quickly (sending attack pattern deltas to them, tac teams, etc) anything to make their job a bit easier can earn you a new friend and complete the stf faster

besides, lets not forget that we are in a mmo, working with others is the most fun to be had in the end

also an fyi, the command ships can create mean, mean torp boats so if you always have stuck to energy weapons all the time, can take a command ship and deck her all out with plasma torps with lots of particle gens, skip putting energy weapons on her at all and laugh as you get to have a totally different experience burning down the borg

as for the iconic ships, I think I might pick up the DD, I think she could be alot of fun as a heal boat as well as making a torp boat version,

besides, I would be lying if I didnt say I do really love the look of all 3 of the iconic ships, I just cant suffer the stats of the fed or klink versions for anything BUT healing, now the DD? that I can see some options with:)

I love running heals on my tac guardian, usually in pve as Im too busy trying to survive in pvp. I love the team play element, I just wish there were fewer jerks about.

I was thinking of buying the cross faction command bundle, as my KDF and rom are ship starved right now. By my calculations, the bundle will be a mere 9,600 zen at the next sale.

Apart from giving AHOD to everyone, it would also grant my resource-starved KDF and Rom alts access to an Epic quality 4pc set with no upgrade costs. From what youve said, the non tac variants would work well on them, since the Roms include a Sci and an Eng, while the KDF includes one of each profession.

I guess my decision is made then. Command it is. I can always get the iconics further down the line *drools over D'Dex and Neg before turning away sadly*

Thanks so much for the help chaps.

well, your paying for 3 ships vs 9. and do you use think you will need more then 3 command skills?

also the galaxy factor, negvar factor, and d'deridex factor score 10/10 in style points.

It's a simple decision: support the new EP's philosophy that modernized versions of long-time fan favorites deserve a place in the t6 line up or spend money on command ships that are the continued manifestation of the philosophy underpinning a failed expansion. My advice is don't spend a dime on Intel or command ships and buy the iconic ship pack.

As far as I know, Suppression Barrage is the only awesome command skill, and the only command skill that doesnt suck (I might be wrong though). So id probably use suppression 3 on a presidio, and LTC level suppression on a Gal or Neg. Thats a point in the iconics favour to be honest, since I get to keep ful eng use.

I wish there was a tac command only cross faction pack - like Presidio, Tygokor and Vastam. But I figure since getting those 3 individually would cost about 7200 at the next ship sale, I might as well use up my dil and get the mega bundle for 9600, since the consoles and variants will be so useful.

Out of interest, what do you think about the 5 eng consoles at fleet level thing? I was originally a bit horrified (would have much preferred 4 sci or tac) but not so sure now - although I typically only use 2 eng consoles, the rest of the space could be for uni consoles.

Sigh. I wish these iconics has all hands on deck.

i was wondering, do i need 10 levels of command specialization before i can possibly use command abilities at all? or is there white boffs with command spec avalable at venders that i could train with command skills i buy off the exchange or boff trainers?

im a bit out of touch.

Theres white command boffs available from the boff vendors for dirt cheap, and theres a free purple quality command/eng kobali boff in "dust to dust" (shes hiding in the maze waiting to be recruited).

Its weird for me to give you info - normally its the other way round, ive los count of the build advice youve given me since i joined. Feels nice to return the favour for once (:

    EDIT:

Does anyone know what kind of cloak the Neg gets? Is it a battle cloak like the Qib, or is it lumbered with a normal cloak?

If its a battle cloak, that would give it something other than turn over the tygokor.

You can buy any skill you want from the exchange. There is no need to level any of it.

The standard skill books can be bought for cheep from the vendors. The level IIIs can all be gotten on the exchange for reasonable prices. Or if you know someone with the spec they can train the book for you even cheaper.

thanks guys, i was thinking this stuff was a bit more gated, glad its that accessible. still, some poor TRIBBLE had to grind out the specialization to train that stuff.

ive played for like 2 hour's total since a bit before the winter event. pvp was just to ruined, upgrades are 5 times more expensive then what i would consider reasonable, and the pve to infantile and easy to burn out on. but, what ive wanted from the beginning more then anything in STO, is a galaxy, neghvar and d'deridex in game that are awesome, and now that has finally happened, and with all the dil and stipend im sitting on, i had to get them and care bear it up a bit.

normal cloak on the neg. the costumes are pretty great too. if only it had 5 fore weapons like the mogh.
