Taris is shown on the Loading Screen artwork, alive, armed and stood in front of a group of Iconian Heralds.

I dont think Taris is dead.. in fact I think her and Sela may well have orchestrated this entire thing. Sela needed to get back to New Romulus, maybe she needed to set certain things in motion, or she needed to recruit herself some new puppets to pull the strings on, puppets in places of authority, puppets with access to the Faction Leaders.. Erm yup, that would be us! Think about it, when has Sela ever, ever acted in a subordinate fashion or offered anyone outside her upper circle anything but the sole of her boots?

This could be a really good story arc, enjoying it so far, and hope it stands up to the test of the fanbase. If not, at least the speculation will be fun untill the truth is out.

And either way, it's excellent fodder for the creative writing community. Might I suggest, sir, that you float this idea in the relevant thread(s)?
