In canon, we have seen a Human fighting for the Romulan Star Empire.
In canon, we have seen Orions interacting with the United Federation of Planets (and two were even Cadets at Starfleet Academy in the 2009 movie).
In canon, we have seen Ferengi selling things to everyone.
In canon, we have seen Trill fighting for the UFP and the Klingon Empire.
In canon, we have seen Vulcans who did not accept the teachings of Surak (Sybok is the prime example, but he is not the only one, as we saw in ENT).
In canon, we have seen Romulans who did accept the teachings of Surak.
In canon, we have seen Klingons fighting for the UFP.
In STO, we have seen Gorn separatists who do not wish to be part of the Klingon Empire.
I can expand this indefinitely, but I trust my point has been made.
My suggestion is: allow characters of any species to CHOOSE their own faction, rather than forcing Vulcans to be Fed, Remans to be RRF, Klingons to be KDF, etc.
This gives more choice to the player. This is more consistent with the Trek canon. This is more realistic than a "one size fits all Gorn (or whatever)" policy.
This also would facilitate making the New Romulan Republic into a true faction, without the need for the alliance system, and without KDF and UFP players having to leave Romulan fleets they have joined when those fleets become distinctly ROMULAN (with Romulan holdings that have Romulan aesthetics).
One of my favorite mechanics in any MMO I've run across is Everquest 2's Betrayal mechanic. It let you do a fairly long quest series to change sides - to switch your character's faction between Good and Evil. This let you play Good races in Evil cities, or vice versa, while making it enough of an investment (and sacrifice) to keep it infrequent.

I wish more MMOs offered that.
I like that, cause my KDF alien can clearly see that the Federation are the true warmonger of the galaxy.
Well excuse me for having enormous flaws that I don't work on.
I'm fine with this; so long as we get Fed and Romulan versions of KDF Orion wear for Orions. Still exclusive to them, but themed appropriately. Male and Female.
Also, Tal Shiar full clothing wear for the more aggressive Romulans (and Remans and Romulan-allied Aliens).
Same goes for any other race with unique clothing options. That way, they have elements of their own race, but optional alternative wear that also has some elements of their chosen faction, and still allowing for the RP'ers to RP their race to the fullest.

already in sto.
In canon, we have seen Orions interacting with the United Federation of Planets (and two were even Cadets at Starfleet Academy in the 2009 movie).
crapverse isnt sto verse, moving on.
In canon, we have seen Ferengi selling things to everyone.
already in game.
In canon, we have seen Trill fighting for the UFP and the Klingon Empire.
that was one example of one joined trill being a friend. only one example. you got more examples of trills, joined or not serving directly in the empire, let me know. so no, trills should never of been a choice for the kdf.
In canon, we have seen Vulcans who did not accept the teachings of Surak (Sybok is the prime example, but he is not the only one, as we saw in ENT).
those issues are so minor, not even worthy of a footnote in trek lore. whats the point in putting it in sto for?
In canon, we have seen Romulans who did accept the teachings of Surak.
we have seen romulans open themselves to the reachings of vulcan in general, not specifically Surak as it was never mentioned directly. and spock had a great deal of influence then anything from the raptor star era of history.
In canon, we have seen Klingons fighting for the UFP.
klingons dont fight for anyone else, they were allies in arms and the klingons do what the klingons want, as they have always done. the federation stood in their path a number of times and never ended well. thats the difference your missing.
In STO, we have seen Gorn separatists who do not wish to be part of the Klingon Empire.
generally the gorn never got over the recent klingon take over of their little empire, on one of hakeev's consoles it is noted that around 70% of the time a gorn would rescue another gorn injuried then an injuried klingon comrade. but the gorn know they are a part of the klingon empire and to a point they accept that. a few misguided gorn may break off, but that is like the trill thing, unless its wide spread and you got proof..
I can expand this indefinitely, but I trust my point has been made.
what point? My suggestion is: allow characters of any species to CHOOSE their own faction, rather than forcing Vulcans to be Fed, Remans to be RRF, Klingons to be KDF, etc.
some choices should be added some choices should be completely removed. to a vulcan, fighting for the empire is not logical because they try to overcome their violent nature by emotional supression and having a vulcan giving into their violent nature, they become savages. even worse then any klingon or human could ever imagine. the charactistic vulcans we know would be ruined by this. no thanks, keep some of these strictly fed races to the feds.
This gives more choice to the player. This is more consistent with the Trek canon. This is more realistic than a "one size fits all Gorn (or whatever)" policy.
what is you definition of trek canon? have you actually watched all those series and understood any of it? because the trek canon i would imagine the rest of us understand is different from your understanding.

the romulans are a mini faction and that will never change and you seem to forget the reasons for the republic being in the position it is in, in the storyline because it was stated that the republic is in no position to turn down help and in exchange return the help to the allies of the empire and federation in order to get protection for the republic from the tal shiar. this is now sto canon.
T6 Miranda Hero Ship FTW. Been around since Dec 2010 on STO and bought LTS in Apr 2013 for STO.
I've been plugging for more factional options since i first started playing. it is concievable (not probable at this point) for all the major factions to disintegrate into a plethera of microfactions.
[insurection expansion]
as to the suggestion that any given thing is 'not going to change,' all i can say is i've heard that before in game after game after game...until the change so passionately denounced is instituted.
But to arrive at the structural framework the OP is suggesting would be something that would take a long time to achieve in order to maintain a cohesive storyline, and i'm talking years here.
Most probable way to make it happen? buy controlling interest in pwi stock and force it--short of that i don't see it happening anytime soon.

I will join the Iconians and raze First City to the ground myself before I see Ferengi in the Honor Guard.
I like that, cause my KDF alien can clearly see that the Federation are the true warmonger of the galaxy.
Grilka would disagree with you. Ferengi are capable of great hobor.

You typoed on their typo... Good job!
