Honestly I donly fly any of the t6's.
Maybe if they come out with new variations like t6 bortasq or voq but I don't think cryptic knows how.
So everyone who plays Uses a t5u.
The difference between T6, T5U and T5 are as followed:
T5: everything you knew
T5U: T5 +1 console slot, +4 starship mastery levels (passive bonusses for that specific ship)
T6: T5+ 1 boff power, +4 starhip mastery levels, +1 starship trait (a new trait that can be used in any ship, limited to 4 at a time), access to Specialization boff powers
T5U is perfectly viable for PvE. My main Romulan still flies a Mogai, not planning to move on any time soon. The rest are adapting to T6, but only because I liked the ships for the ship. Don't get them for the gimmicks, those aren't great.
However, if you go for PvP..... you're gonna die countless of times due to Intel. But PvP is just waiting for somebody to start tossing dirt on its 3 feet deep coffin, thats how dead it is.
T5/T5U is the new T4. If you don't see the improvements, you're just lying to yourself. It's the same kind of improvements it was before DR, the same improvement going from T4 to T5 ships. And back before DR, people wouldn't be caught dead flying a T4 ship when they they could fly T5.
It's up to you. The biggest advantage the T6 have are the traits

If you are a PvPer then it is probably worth it. If you are a PvEer it adds very little real value. The only real advantage is a free Trait when you buy the ship.
My T5 Fleet Sovereign could do 15,000 DPS before Delta Rising and before T6 ships were introduced. That DPS came from a combination of Mk XII Rep and Fleet Gear that anyone can get just by investing time.
Since DR has come out the only changes I have made to the ship are to use my free Upgrade Token to make it T5U. I have also added a handful of Mk XIII drops I got while doing various Delta Rising missions.
I had no difficulty doing Advanced STFs with the same basic ship I had before T6 and Mk XIV Epic came along. I used free Zen to buy the Delta Pack from the C-Store and never even used any of the T6 ships. My Sovereign, my Vesta, my Wells are still the ships I am mainly using.
STO is about my Liberated Borg Federation Captain with his Breen 1st Officer, Jem'Hadar Tactical Officer, Liberated Borg Engineering Officer, Android Ops Officer, Photonic Science Officer, Gorn Science Officer, and Reman Medical Officer jumping into their Jem'Hadar Carrier and flying off to do missions for the new Romulan Empire. But for some players allowing a T5 Connie to be used breaks the canon in the game.
t5u has all the same ship masteries except the trait also has 11 console slots.
I have not really looked at t6, but I am guessing they would (should) have higher hp and hull, but may only have 10 consoles thou some of the newer ships have 11. the ones with 10 most likely will get a fleet upgrade down the road. t6 thou should have 1 more boff ability than a t5u.
The advantages of T6 are this: they're all generally well built ships with some neat bells and whistles. Pick one up if you feel you might like it, same as with any new ship, but that's not a requirement. Not by any means.

Some Tier 6 Ships have powerful traits that tend to make things easier.
Some Tier 6 Ships have consoles that also make the game a little easier or make you a bit more powerful.
None of them however, are required for end game content. T5-U is absolutely still viable and more then capable of completing any of the game content. If you put together a sensible build and fly it with even a moderate amount of skill you'll be just fine.
T6 ships are nice, but purely and completely optional.
That is up to you OP. I am doing just fine with T5U ships. I don't find the T6 ships pleasing to the eye either. As always, I get the feeling the latest "hotness" will get beat by the cryptic nerfbat as soon as they make the next "hotness".
Rom Tac: Mogai
Rom Eng: slow ugly thingy
Rom Sci: Dyson thingy
Out of those ships only the Charal and and B'rel seem to be worth upgrading for the console slot, while the other ships are either not fleet level or have only that bit hull and the passive traits going for them.
Nothing wrong with that. The cryptic guys need to make a living, too. As long as they have something to offer I enjoy I'm happy to spend some money on the game.
The majority of the replies encouraged me to just upgrade the ships I enjoyed so far. Maybe my Rom engineer will get a fleet D'Deridex or this Aelahl warbird at some point. Maybe there will be other T6 options in the future like those fabled T6 Negh'var.
The good thing is I have a choice and I don't have to replace my favourite ships in order to do some STF's.
honestly i just done see any justification on the ridiculus price tags, i love the designs but im pretty much paying for a full game for the price of these ships now and it just seems more ships for more "specialisation" seats to the point if ya want more ships your adding on more cash to that initial ship price tag for the space to put that ship even when they have no justification for charging you extra for more ship space they are not going to have "database issues" if everyone can have unlimited amounts of ships n there hanger unless there coding is really as bad as it seems.
The way things are going you're better off waiting until their done pooping out T6 ships then pick the best one for you unless the t5/t5-u/free t6 ships appeal to you. If you can afford more then get ones that have traits/consoles that also benefit you but the way things are now whatever you get will probably become less worthwhile.
New pilot boff slots are inbound which currently apply to no new ships so might as well wait then decide rather than buy something only to find powercreep and new flashy stuff outdoing your new purchase.
When the Fleet T6's come out I expect them to have the 11th console, like T5-U's do now, so I wont be sacrificing a console AND I will still have all the 'extras' that come with T6.
When they release the Fleet T6's, I will buy one for each character. Until then, my T5-U's are doing just fine AND have an extra console slot over the base T6's.

Yeah, seems like the best plan for the moment. Still a bit undecided which char I should start leveling first.
My old main is the Klingon tac, but I can't decide between Tor'kaht (handling, looks, Boff layout) and Mogh (5/3 weapon layout is just better for cannon boats)
My Andorian tac has no such issues, Charal ftw.
Or I could enjoy the power of all those superior Romulan operatives and upgrade the Mogai.
Can I get rid of Tovan Kev now ? Thats the single most anoying "feature" of playing Romulans.

only buy a t6 if you want the ship trait.

I usually prefer flying canon ships, but I don't want to be a burden for my team. One of my favourite ships was the fleet Tor'kaht with Vor'cha skin.
That's what I've got for my chars at the moment:
Fed Tac: Kumari pack, Defiant
Fed Eng: Galor, Assault Cruiser
Fed Sci: Nova
KDF Tac: Tor'kaht, Mogh, B'rel
KDF Eng: Negh'var, Mogh
KDF Sci: Chel Grett, Guramba
Rom Tac: Mogai
Rom Eng: slow ugly thingy
Rom Sci: Dyson thingy
