So yeah.. I think I'm in need of some advice. But first, hello, nice to meet you!
I've been playing for a few months now, and mostly running around on story content. First character was a Fed engineer, second is a Klingon tactical, thinking about a Romulan scientist for my Delta Recruit. I've been enjoying the story missions with all their callbacks to canon. I've figured out duty officer missions. I've learned how the rep system works and been tier climbing, looking for the more interesting reward gear. In particular, been having a lot of fun in the Solanae sphere ship and ground combat zones.
I noticed today the only way to get Omega gear was to participate in Advanced STFs to earn Borg neural processors. I did research and picked the first one that couldn't be failed. I knew I wasn't going to rival any longtime players, but I still got told I should never queue for advanced again. Not sure I deserved to be sworn at when the mission was still a success and the optional objective got met, but whatever, people forget that it's a game, it happens.
After learning a lot of lessons with my Fed character and consulting the wiki and boards throughout my time here, I thought my builds and piloting skills were better, but I guess there's no substitute for the knowledge of veterans.
I guess what I'm looking for, then, is a fleet in each faction accepting of casual and/or older gamers, who don't mind giving them an education. I understand there's a fair amount of stuff you can only get from fleets, too, and I'm not looking for freebies, just friends and tips so I won't get yelled at again. Anyone want to help a newb out?
PS. I've seen advice about posting builds using the skill planner. I can definitely do that, it's just a bit late tonight..
I'd post the request for the fleet down in the Fleet Section... better chance for a reply down there I would think.
As for BNPs... you can get BNPs as well from advanced Borg ground missions... and from doing hard Defera missions... which honestly are a bit easier.
My other suggestion would be to get into crafting. A lot of the crafted gear is much better then the Rep gear.... and only requires time and dilithium to get and to use. Mostly time... but a lot of dilithium.
That said Cryptic has a horrible advertising ability when it comes to what else is going on in STO and where ther alternate versions of BNPs can be gotten from. Hell if I hadn't been around for the longest time I would probably not even know that Defera existed after it's missions... or even half of the missions to get dilithium ore are or exist.
I'm not sure the Omega space sets are worth the trouble now, at any rate there's other sets that I find to be far more useful (and far easier to get) not to mention the Elite Fleet stuff. That said, if you're hell-bent on getting it:-
Unless you're in a desperate hurry to grab Omega gear, you could play Normals to complete the Omega Reputation which gives you enough BNPs and Dilithium to make one part of the set (plus unlocking traits along the way that improves your effectiveness against the Borg).
Remember it's also possible to get Breen, Dominion, Kobali and Solanae sets just from repeating episodes as well (check the wiki), not to mention at least decent consoles and weapons which should do you for most content.
go to Derera at prime time and ask to join a hards group in zone chat
you get 4 per run and its easy you can do this once per day well worth it
You should do this once per day every day weather you need the BNPs or not
Jellico....Engineer ground.....Da'val Romulan space Sci
Saphire.. Science ground......Ko'el Romulan space Tac
Leva........Tactical ground.....Koj Romulan space Eng
JJ-Verse will never be Canon or considered Lore...It will always be JJ-Verse
Thank you, everyone, for all of the good advice, particularly for pointing out Defera. Not having anyone yell at me for not being so great at STFs, well, that's probably better for everyone. I guess I'm really more worried about being able to get things without annoying other players.
The advice about sets and replaying missions is good, too. Thankfully, I figured that one out already. Both of my current characters have ships with the Ancient Obelisk warp core and omni-directional array, and the Jem'Hadar shields and impulse engines, and I've spent plenty of time in general mining replays for rewards.
I know crafting can be used to make great things, but, I'm a little daunted by the grind. I think I might do that once I'm really bored with reputation stuff.
westmetals, thank you for the offer. I'll say hello when I get a chance!
trueapocrypha I personally play Borg content STFs/Defera primarily if you are looking for some extra help or looking for a run feel free to hit me up in game @captainedwards09
I'd just like to say that I'm sorry your first STF experience had to be like that - there was a time when those queues were more about having a good time than padding numbers and ego-stroking like it is today. I personally enjoyed 'carrying' inexperienced groups and showing/demonstrating the ropes back in the day..
As others have mentioned, there is always Defera now if you really need BNPs.
My suggestion for starting to gear up is to run the Dyson Ground and Undine Space Battlezones. These are a lot more friendly towards players who are still cutting their teeth and offer some very good sets for both ground and space. You get new and veteran players alike in these zones and it's a great way to see the difference in methodology between them(veteran players will generally avoid triggering extra spawns via over-populating a point; better tactics for specific situations/encounters; advanced builds that can do things you may not have considered; etc.).

First off, let me say I don't agree with people blowing up at someone for not doing a "good enough" job, especially when even the optional got made. As you said, it is a game, there's far more important things to get mad about.
However, somewhat in their defense, I have to ask two questions. First, did you do the mission on normal at least once or twice before trying it on advanced? I have no problem providing what advice I can, and even walking people through missions. However, there's a time and place to do that. An Advanced STF is not that place and that's why some people get so mad. Second, did you ignore advice/instructions given in team chat, as unfriendly as those instructions may have been given? While it doesn't excuse some people's behavior, those two things are pretty much a surefire way to get sworn at in team chat.
As a general rule, I post CLR results in team chat at the end of the match. I don't do this as some sort of ego trip to show how good of a player I am (I'm not). I do this so everyone can see how they did, at least from a damage perspective, at the end of the match. A lot of people are really out of touch with reality on the quality of their build or their skills. Some it's ego, some simply don't know how to actually tell how they are doing. I've seen a lot of people say "well things seem to die quickly when I shoot at them". Not exactly the most scientific of results.
But regardless of what those CLR results are, I don't offer unsolicited advice. No matter how lop sided those results might be.
Regarding getting help, the NOP Public Service channel is always a source of good help, as well as access to fleet stores.
