So there is the question in the title. I have been away for a while but came back and with the free upgrade decided to start outfitting my DSD. I have all reps maxed out except Delta but working towards that. Have a decent amount of Dil and credits. So I need help with this thing. Never really flew it much as I had a Fleet Advanced T'Varo. Have a full torp build on it so thats really the only equipment I have so probably need to go from scratch. I am also a Sci cap. Thanks for any help you can give me on this as I feel kind of lost at the moment.
I should probably mention I know I could just keep running my T'Varo but to be quite honest I am tired of the torp boat. Plus it was mainly plasma damage and not as effective anymore but that is because of the power creep to some extent.
So you decided to attack some spelling error to don't have to deal with the contain and when you did you didn't have the brain to can answer it.
Don't have a DSD but if you like the T'Varo you should consider looking at the Faeht. It's the king of all raiders. Got the enhanced battle cloak, a powerful lance console (plasma), high intel seating and intel ship abilities. I prefer flying destroyer types like the Mogai but it's really fun to fly and packs an absurd alpha if built correctly (ask the PvPers). With the new Elites being more challenging and objective based, I find it fun to fly as an actual raider swiftly sniping priority targets like Vaadwaur artillery ships while the beam boats float around aoeing. Survivability is a bit of an art with few eng options, but it's great as a hit and run ship and supports the torp boat style the of the T'Varo should you get nostalgic.
As for the DSD, you might be short on advice considering sci Warbirds are unfortunately so rare.
The DSD (no matter which version) is subpar both as sci and/or escort. I'm very aware that non-feds don't have much of a choice in the end-game sci department but if you don't have some box or lobi ship it's not worth the cash you'd have to spend to gear it up.
If you really wanna play around with some great sci ships without the box-gamble then going fed is unfortunately your only option.
For roms it's only cruisers and escorts but at least those are amazing. The Faeht is pretty much a T'Varo on steroids, just without it's deathball of doom console.;)
Edit:
Not too long ago I've read about some bug that prevented the use of both the DSD's commander abilities, dunno if it's fixed by now.
in my experience with all of the DSD's, first there is an ongoing bug with the boff abilities that are in the commander slots. The ability that is the default for that slot for the BOFF is the one that will show up in the stations. It is NOT changeable. Even if you've set it to some other skill in the skill tab, it will revert to the default and you can't change it in the stations tab. this affects both the commander tactical and science station (the commander skill is the one that is working depending on mode your ship is in).
To this end, I try to put a boff in there that will have a default commander skill that I can make use of when in either mode.
However, lately, I've just ignored that unchangeable weapon and stay in sci mode. Only using the tactical mode if I need a touch more fire power.
Equipping the ship... well, I've been using the complete Solanae set. It gives several abilities that are pretty impressive... or at least I think so... two are shield abilities and two are sci abilities that help disable shields. I can't remember the names at the moment.
weapon types are a matter of choice I guess, but I have been liking the Corrosive plasma type and or the bio-moleculer (I think that's it) types.
So, I guess your milage may vary with these ships. Oh, and now you can some what customize them and take them out of the bright white scheme... Especially the KDF and Romulan versions
So what exactly have you done with yours as far as skills and weapons? Cannons or beams etc. Cannons would seem a decent choice so I could use the installed cannons but then I lose my GW3 to go tac mode. I haven't noticed any problem with the commander slot not being what my crew member has for a skill that seems odd as this is the first I have heard of it.
So you decided to attack some spelling error to don't have to deal with the contain and when you did you didn't have the brain to can answer it.
The switchable BOFF seat bug has been fixed for quite a while.
First and most important piece of advice is to ignore the tact mode switchy thingy. If you want to do the tact oriented science thing the fleet T'Varo you have is the better choice.
I do a fairly traditional exotic damage/cc build with my Rom DSD. Solanae core and deflector, adapated MACO engine and shield. Rom plasma beams and the Dyson grav torp. To be honest it is not a ship I am in love with like I am with my fed sci and its Scryer. But if it means anything I purchased a Deihu only to go back to the DSD once I came to the conclusion that it didn't fit my playstyle.
Something consider with SCI-TAC ships or SciScorts is All Hands on Deck. With the amount of Tactical abilities you can outfit, it will help to cut down the CD of those Science abilities. Science Vessels with a TAC alignment like the DSD will benefit more from AHOD than other SCI Vessels.
The issue is the minute or so cooldown for changing modes.
Or getting stuck in the tac-mode. All gimmick/separation ships tend to be getting stuck in one of their modes every once in a while. On most it's fixable by removing and re-equiping the corresponding console but thats a luxury the DSD dosen't have. If you really use a DSD and it's set up as a pure sci ship stay out of tac mode, it's for your own best.
The issue is the minute or so cooldown for changing modes.
It's been a while since I've flown one, but I distinctly remember the cooldown only applying when leaving tactical mode. There was no cooldown for simply switching into Tac Mode for a few seconds and then leaving it.
First off, you're right, the mode switch cooldown is only applied when leaving tactical mode and going back to science mode - ie, once you leave tactical mode, you're stuck in science mode for 1 minute.
Second off, my opinion on what to do with the DSD all depends on your ultimate playstyle and plans...
When building her as a straight-up science ship, just read science threads and build away.
When building her as a science ship and using the transformation gimmick for the occasional tweak, keep in mind two things: The transformation is delayed some (so no click transform, click cmdr power, transform back to science mode) and that switching shuts off any locked on sensor analysis.
If you're planning on flying her primarily in tactical (destroyer) mode and using the Science as the "tweak", keep in mind that to make the most of that baked-on proton cannon almost requires going all-in on Dyson stuffs. You'll want the Dyson weapon set (adds a second proton weapon), a regular Dyson store weapon (cannon so that your CRF/CSV affects your 3 energy weapons) of choice, equipment set (deflector/shield/engine/core), and tactical consoles. Even then, the math(s) seem to indicate that all the buffed up proton damage does not make up for the lacking regular damage - if you're a DPS hound you're usually considered better off ignoring the proton cannon and doing what you'd do normally as a science and going from there...
Detecting big-time "anti-old-school" bias here. NX? Lobi. TOS/TMP Connie? Super-promotion-box. (aka the two hardest ways to get ships) Excelsior & all 3 TNG "big hero" ships? C-Store. Please Equalize...

Welcome back!
Regarding science abilities, run those that the secondary deflector uses; minus ones for HE, PH, Tractor Beam, or ST.
If you are tired of torpedoes then use Protonic Polaron energy weapons. I'd keep the ship in Science mode.
I'm a little late in replying to this thread but I've been running the T5U DSD with the full Solanae set and Thoron Infused polaron weapons and that has worked decently for me.
Probably not the ship I'll stick with (I was planning on using the Kar'fi that I've enjoyed on my Gorn, but KDF Rommie can't use it! ), but I was regularly finishing in first, second or third place in the crystalline event (basic, not advanced) without really trying.

Load up on Flow Capacitors, the Jem Hadar Deflector, (Protonic) Polaron Beam Arrays, Tyken's Rift/Energy Siphon/Plasmonic Leech, and go ham.
Stay in Science Mode unless you want to throw down an Attack Pattern Beta 3 in Tactical Mode or such.

Did that change recently?
