Looking for advice on buying a ship

Okay, so after ages of building up a Federation fleet, I've decided to set my sights on getting Romulan ships for endgame stuffs. This is mostly because the only ship I have is the T'varo Retrofit.
Thanks to the wonders of tax refunds, I was able to snatch up enough to buy a 3-pack and I was eyeing either the Scimitar set or the Command set. However, after I asked a few others, I was given the pointers:

1) Don't buy three packs - consoles suck and it's only good for Space Barbie

2) The Scimitars are gonna be outclassed soon

3) Just get the Scimitar and Vastum and be happy.

I know it sounds silly, but... does that seem like sound advice or maybe I should try something else?

I dunno, I've never dealt with anything outside the Federation, so I'm just utterly lost here.

Choice/recommendation 3 sounds like the best bet if you're mainly wanting to face-roll PvE. The Vastam's trait is one of the more OP traits out there, and probably the best Romulan C-Store trait yet particularly when combined with a Tac Captain. The Scim is still the go-to DPS ship in the game, and becomes even more powerful with All Hands on Deck trait.

I would disagree with point 1, when it comes to the Command ships at least. While none of the three Command birds are top-level of play(I.E. going to be the ones setting DPS records) ships, the consoles that come with them have passive boosts and decent stat-boosting set bonuses, on top of being novel clickables too. Scim pack isn't quite as nice, with no individual console giving stat boosts, and the three-set of Thalaron Burst isn't as epic as it could be, and you have to have a specific build to make it hit hard and survive the charge up time when you can't move or fire off abilities.

On point 2, I'd expect every ship to be obsoleted/de-throned at some point as long as the game continues running, the question is when. I don't see any indication that the Scimitar is getting any sort treatment like the JHAS compared to the new JHSS anytime soon, but we don't know Cryptic's plans.

3 packs....consoles are cool and fun to play with, and the Scimitar set has a spiffy 2-piece and an entertaining 3-piece, but from a numerical point of view they aren't efficient choices. Basically do you want to laugh maniacally as you charge up your Thalaron pulse of DOOOOOM, or do you want to be less showy but more efficiently murderous? Basically you're paying an extra $25 for sh!ts & giggles.

Command ships, can't speak from personal experience, but on paper they look to be a better set than most, particularly if the you have the Kobali Samsar console to go with. Full set gives you 4 clickly powers, plus the equivalent of an extra RCS, shield, and tac console. Thats not bad. But really its the All Hands On Deck trait thats so particularly powerful, whereas the rest is $30 more for icing on the cake.

One other ship to consider is the T3 Valdore. A T3 ship on its own won't do much for you, but the console (I forget the name, some long technobabble) gives you a chance to proc large shields heals whenever shooting things, and is the most powerful console the Romulans have. If you buy Romulan stuff for consoles alone, it should probably be top of your list, particularly for just $10.

The command 3-pack is probably the best one in the store (besides the fed exclusive vesta) and does have some very good pros attached to it.
Neat consoles with nice set bonuses, you'll get all traits (which are a blessing since the intel ship traits suck), and you can freely choose the console layout and ship parts.
Kinda worth it though it's still very expensive.

The scimi pack on the other hand....somewhat less worth the cash. You'll never use any other besides the 5 tac console variant, the consoles themselfes are more on the gimmicky and less on the practical useful side and the set boni, specialy the 3pc, are not worth the space you could fill with loads of universals from reps, lobi-store, fleet-store, lvl15 crafting, etc.

My recommendation would be the command-pack + Valdore (that frigging console man) and maybe later the scimitar if you think your command boat lacks some dps.

    1) this depends. It is usually correct, but *nothing* is absolute. The command cruisers are a good example. I have a bunch of chars, mostly romulan. One is science. I *WILL USE* the rom science cruiser, and I WILL USE the rom tac version as well. The price for 3 is the same as the price for 2. So the 3 pack becomes a valid choice FOR ME. Point --- its a good in general rule of thumb, but your circumstances must be considered ... there are times when a 3-pack is the right choice.

    2) Not true. I give them at least another year, year and a half before something new even gets CLOSE to bumping it to a "mere" second or third place. It will be 2 years or another full expansion before the ship is even knocked out of the TOP TEN IN THE GAME.

    3) the scim is not for everyone. I hate that ship, and prefer the faeht by a very wide margin. The scimitar is a one trick pony -- its a FAW machine. Its very good at it. VERY good at it. But if you do not enjoy flying a 2 mile wide ship that flies like a hippo on ice skates and has 1 fairly boring play style, it may not be your best pick.

    Romulan ships worth talking about:
    scim
    faeht
command cruiser, tactical (science, less so, but you might be surprised at what a 1/2 exotic 1/2 guns build can do).

Most of the rest are simply outdated and outclassed for DPS. There is no useful science ship at all. If you want a tank, command cruiser already covers that.

I wouldn't buy the scim 3 pack, you only need the tactical version. The Command Cruiser 3 pack is a decent purchase tho, the 3 consoles along with the 4th from the kobali ship is a decent starter console set to use before you get your hands on the better uni consoles (but once you get those better consoles these will become pretty much useless). You can also make some seriously nice look ship combos too (nothing wrong with flying a nice looking ship while your at it =P).

With that said all you really need at the end of the day is the Scim and Vastum, though as someone else mentioned the Faeht is a nice ship too (plays more like an escort), and the Valdore is good to pick up for its shield healing console. It boils down to your playstyle If you love the fed escorts then maybe the Faeht is for you, If you love the agile cruisers then the Vastum will do nicely, and then the Scim is slow huge monster, tends to get stuck on stuff if you get close to it but has the highest dmg potential.

If you asked me, this would have been my answer:
    3) Just get the Scimitar and Vastum and be happy.

In this seldom occurence (:P) noroblad is perfectly right with

Just a quick note here - I've been very pleased with the Aelahl. It isn't fancy, but it is a beast when loaded out properly, and while not an escort it is maneuverable enough. The only real complaint is that if you are into the Intel powers it only has a Lt. slot available for that, so no surgical strikes.

Only ship I've bought so far for my Rommie was the Arkif tactical carrier refit. Wanted a carrier, but one I could fight with and not just spam beams (and was Romulan).

It dies a lot, but that might be my build, but its fun to fly :)
