Ok so we sit in an uncomfortable world at the moment.
There are a whole bunch of lockbox ships that are T5-U. There are a few of the newer ones that are T6.
The JHSS set a very dangerous precedent (yes the pathfinder did it before but this was c-store not gamble store), in that it replaced the older JHAS and totally nullified investment/effort players made in obtaining the older version and makes me and many others question whether it's still worth the investment to aim for the top-of-the-range ships only to know it will be obsolete in an increasingly shorter period of time.
SOLUTION
Stop with new boxes
Revisit old boxes and bring them up to date with new T6 versions of the older T5 ships
(e.g. next up Cardassian box: T6 Keldon (upgrade of Galor) - lockbox ship, T6 Hideki - lobi store ship, give the box an update to include all manner of new things including traits, modules, cross faction console etc)
Give players that own existing versions of the older T5-U ships the option to buy an UPGRADE token from the LOBI STORE - priced at 500 lobi.
This way you will still sell you keys (only way to get meaningful lobi) and previous owners do not have their previous investment negated (they have a defined non-gamble path to upgrade).
PROBLEM WITH SOLUTION
Q. How do you treat existing JHAS owners that invested to obtain a JHSS
A. I will leave that to you...(but maybe a 500 lobi refund would be a start if you can work it out).
Sounds like a plan! I would like the old lock boxes to be revamped instead of getting new ones all the time.
They could even include the old tier 5 ships as kind of second price. A lobi upgrade at 500 or so for the Tier 6 equivalent would also be awesome and sounds like a fair deal for you and me and even the Ferengi.

Give me a HELL YEAH!
I would like for example the jem'hadar's little cloaked ground mines as a module, please! Also the hirogen's land mines! ^^
They won't revamp lock boxes, and certainly not the Cardassian box, considering that still gives headaches when talking about a Cardassian minifaction.
But the 500 lobi thing is very reasonable. Expensive yes, but otherwise it wouldn't be worth the money for Cryptic I guess. I really like this idea.
This would make them money and save on development costs.
I just can't see them doing it. When it comes to doing something logical that the players want or doing something new and shiny, they always seem to go for the new and shiny.
Eh, while I would support it, I don't see it happening.
Other games don't do this for other equipment sets (which the ship effectively is in STO's case) you get gambling with each raid run (hoping for an ideal drop with just the right stats or a lucky win on a group roll) or prize boxes (usually an end-raid extra bonus chance that sometimes might require a separate key), so it's not like STO isn't doing anything new; beyond even offering that slight "set" upgrade with the T5U token (a few MMOs offer set upgrades as well to extend use duration until you can get a better set).
That's what I suggested before but with no specifics in the first JHSS blog.
Even tough sounds logical don't think Cryptic will do since would be a hassle to re-work the in/outs.
Besides the new MR EP acknwoledged the error in flase advertising for those who already owned the old JHAS but with NO solutions except for a very weak apology.Horrible precedent for a new leader IMO.
500 lobi is generously 100 keys = 200,000,000 EC or $100
You can buy most of the ships for half that on the exchange.
I would favor the upgrade if it were 100 or even 200 lobi. After this I would prefer to just buy the new T6 on the exchange for ec.
If they do a Xindi Aquatic I'll be all over it - provided it looks the same.
Captain Jean-Luc Picard: "We think we've come so far. Torture of heretics, burning of witches, it's all ancient history. Then - before you can blink an eye - suddenly it threatens to start all over again."
"With the first link, the chain is forged. The first speech censured, the first thought forbidden, the first freedom denied, chains us all irrevocably."
I like this idea. My Jem Dreadnought and my Recluse could use some love.
Why the Recluse doesn't have a second deflector slot is beyond logical, especially since it has a 3/3 weapon load out like every other science ship in the game).
One day Cryptic will be free from their Perfect World overlord. Until that day comes, they will continue to pamper the whales of this game, and ignore everyone that isn't a whale.
Cant say that I am keen on the price point. But right now my lockbox and lobi ships do seem like an expensive dead end taking up ship slots.
An upgrade token in the lobi store, or even dropping from a lockbox with a relatively low chance would be fantastic. Maybe even a couple of variants. An Intel upgrade token and a command token so that we could pick our hybrid seat.
This would work for those of us who would be upset if cryptic gave our ship the one we don't want, and it would work for cryptic as some people have to have it all and would buy more ships to upgrade both.
500 lobi + all we spent on the T5U version? uh no thanks. No way would i spend another $100 or more just to "upgrade" something we may have already paid $1000 for if someone was really unlucky.
Cryptic needs to stop catering to whales and start thinking about mass sales of cstore ships. If they put the lockbox ship upgrade token in the cstore for say $20-30 people would buy them like mad. 500 lobi per lockbox ship upgrade when lots of us have tons of lockbox ships already.
They can make the same amount of money, but the differance is, one way you royally TRIBBLE off the player base and count on a few high spending people which is unreliable at best. OR they can make same amount, not TRIBBLE off everyone, and have a sure fire win item.
But we all know which way cryptic would go now...... don't we?
I reviewed the post, and while this is a very clever work around that you have suggested, it is a very unlikely solution, and will most likely not be implemented.
As I don't want this thread to become a petition to make this happen, I will go ahead and leave the thread closed, so we don't give false hope, or the impression that this will be added to the game.
Thanks for the feedback though, I know the T5U vs T6 is a hot topic that the community is very concerned over.
