I must say that I could see this coming. I will just say it how it is here for the record.
I have been a STO Player since the game went Free to Play in January 2012, I didn't get into until August 2012 as far as I remember.
I really enjoyed it back then as a whole and I felt part of the universe of STO.
I played through as a Starfleet officer with my evolving tactical career and then created a Klingon character and played him for a while. I experienced Season 6 -7 and was here for Legacy of Romulus's launch which I felt was the best expansion vs. Delta Rising because It felt more STO like. Delta Rising I enjoyed partly but only for the story side. The painfully and un rewarding grind to level up to 60 from 50 nearly made me leave STO.
But more importantly I would like to comment on the stability of the game, bugs and removal of some content. The game has been gradually getting more unstable every update as it where. There are many bugs in the game that ruin a players experience yet they are reported and very little if anything as far as we know Is done to fix the issues.
Of course we are told that we as loyal players (The Customer) have to remember that STO must be run as business and what gets fixed or added has to contribute to attract new players and I would myself hope that content be of sufficient quality and quantity to retain existing players (Pay to play era players and Free to Play) as well. Problem is this, STO is now an unstable game and has a large amount of bugs and is getting more laggy as a game to the point where the game would put off anyone.
Content wise, The concept that seems to have been recently adopted by the development team about getting rid of content that doesn't meet their current benchmark standard and either remastering the said content or removing it all together.
To take a specific example from the quality of life side.
Memory Alpha, It was a great place to go and I have fond memory's of my early days at Memory Alpha. The map the atmosphere e.t.c the feeling of being in another unique location. I had heard that there where plans to remaster it. A moment in time passed and The R&D System gets the revamp it needed. however what was going happen to Memory Alpha, removed. The birthplace for R&D was no longer. A decent place was removed resulting in something less for the player to enjoy. What happened to remastering the map and did removing something decent enhance the game... No it didn't. Im not sure if it will be added again in a remastered format in the same release fashion as Club 47.
Add all the bugs which you have been reported to you by the players and the diminishing overall content of the game and what it offers to you as a player It is quite clear why the game is heading down a route to total decline.
The games poplus are responding on the forums comment in the theme's I have presented here today. The decisions taken some good some bad are affecting the success and long term viability of the game. I will not tell you how to run the game but just say that if something is done soon STO will fail across the board to retain players and fail to attract new player as well. Bring back the same feeling of expansion and evolving quality Star Trek Online that was here at better right up to until a while after it went free to play.
A simple plea so that STO can be a great game again that of course will in turn please us and Perfect World and of course Cryptic. Don't let Star Trek Online die. Make it a great fun authentic content filled game rewarding with game engine updates and a balanced strategy to making the game great across the board rather than a great here bad here approach.
I imagine Tacofangs will be a Dev to comment if at all negatively on what I have stated here, maybe im asking for it lol, but someone had to say it. I would like as a loyal player the best for the game and everyone who plays it as well.
Let the debate commence
Make it so!

There is no proof whatsoever that the number of players is declining.
If your proof is your fleet, then your fleet is just incompetent of recruiting.
If your proof is your friendslist, that is a very biased and small sample size.
if your proof is the forums, the STO forums is a very small minority.
If your proof is bugs, all software have bugs.
The only thing that I would agree with you is the amount of lag currently happening. Something has got to be done about that.
