hey all, I have been a long time STO fan and finally bought into the LTS 3 years ago. I have enjoyed the Chimera destroyer on my tac officer and when I heard we would be able to upgrade our ships to tier 6 I was ecstatic.. until I did it that is...
If you pay the extortion price of 30 bucks per t6 ship or did the Anniversary event like I did you may have noticed that the tier 6 ships when fully updated give you a ship trait. However the 5U ships do not have this feature, Not even the LTS ships that should be qualified for them by default.
So at this point I have to ask this in all seriousness, Just what is left to make the LTS worth the cost when you can unlock the basic features for less off the zen store?
So far, ship traits or not, my T5U is still a better ship than any T6 I've tried so far. Unless the trait is revolutionary, the incremental improvement isn't worth the effort and expense.
Since I've been an LTS since before day 1, I've long since recouped my investment.
You know I n e ran down the math on this and even before vet rewards or still came out to a prety good value for the other stuff you get.
I have noticed alot of complaining about the extra inch on the measuring stick, if being bigger than the stick is what's important to you then you're going to have to live with having to give up more cash than those of us who aren't interested I the stick

They LTS ship even when it was new at the 1000 day marker was no better than any other ship.
Over 50 dollars of repec token, extra bank and account slots and the 500 Zen each month is what's the LTS good.
The team bonus and the self rebooting droid is the best usable items from the VET rewards.
I bought mine during beta have 26 toons that's $1,300 in respec tokens and 30,000 in ZEN over the last five years.
i bought the lts almost 2 years ago now, back when LoR came out before brandon left the game and before it all went to hell in a teacup.
i got my monies worth out of it and its now just rewarding me the z store coins each month. just profiting from it now :P. returns of about 10k zen by now.
the vet ships are alright as well, unfortunately i dont really fly them because they are escorts and escorts are not to my style of play.
and all those QoL features one would expect are also there, including the VA ship token. unfortunately used up the upgrade token as soon as it was open to veteran/lts players.
T6 Miranda Hero Ship FTW. Been around since Dec 2010 on STO and bought LTS in Apr 2013 for STO.
but i do know there was some chat about increasing veteran rewards, but nothing ever came of it beyond chat.
Yeah, short of the addition of the Talaxian character option (meh)...
And, no source, sorry. I heard that on one of Smirk's livestreams, actually... someone asked him, and he had his usual coy response to such things... but, I've never found anything to back up the claim. So, it could have been someone's wishing thinking.
1. Wasn't there a rumor about a T6 vet ship a while back?
2. Do you want a T6 vet ship? (Granted, a kinda obvious question there, LOL...)
Seems to me it would be the easiest way to bump the value.
I would love to see the Veteran ships get a Tier 6 variant with an additional costume for day 2000 (I'm at 1863 presently).
Veteran ships were maintained as relevant until endgame, which had previously been achieved with the T5 and Fleet T5 versions. T5U for free advanced them a little, but now they've ceilinged there.
A T6 "refit" would allow for a few things. Maintain the designs at the forefront of being desirable at endgame. Allow for the room to upgrade them to Fleet T6. And the additional costume would allow to finally have some tangible customization at the high standards of artwork the game have risen to and provide aesthetic alternatives to the Vet ships.
I might use the Chimera more if its engineering hull didn't jut down so much that I felt it looked ridiculous, whereas it having a more Akira-like deflector would likely make it look streamlined and awesome.
I look at the Deihu design and feel that this is how the Daeinos ought to have been stylized from the beginning (looking as much as the Romulan Republic raptor symbol as possible). Of course, the Deihu isn't quite there, but the Daeinos refit could be.
I look at the Peghqu' and honestly don't care for its bridge module (the nose) and the way the disruptor lotus deploys (way too wide, and it looks rather toylike).
Maybe the T6 Refits could also include an extra console which could bring about an interesting ability and a set bonus with the Dynamic Tactical System.

you cant upgrade T5 ships to T6, you can buy new c-store T6 ships for 30 bucks.
you can however upgrade the T5 to T5u and this includes event ships and the lifetime/1000day ships.
as for the T6 ship traits if you were clever enough to get the last two event ships both were T6 and come with a tier 5 mastery trait, once gained you can use these traits on any ships you fly even the lifetime ones.
so at the end of the day there is really very little difference between T5u and T6 , the lifetime ships have a lot of use in them yet and at zero cost.
don't forget there will also most likely be a T6 for the summer event and rinse and repeat next year so as time goes on you will have more T6 ship traits then you will know what to do with all without buying one T6 ship or spending a dime.
When I think about everything we've been through together,
maybe it's not the destination that matters, maybe it's the journey,
and if that journey takes a little longer,
so we can do something we all believe in,
I can't think of any place I'd rather be or any people I'd rather be with.
Captain Jean-Luc Picard: "We think we've come so far. Torture of heretics, burning of witches, it's all ancient history. Then - before you can blink an eye - suddenly it threatens to start all over again."
"With the first link, the chain is forged. The first speech censured, the first thought forbidden, the first freedom denied, chains us all irrevocably."
I think one of the most overlooked and valuable perks of being a lifer is the enormous number of respec tokens you get per toon.
Valuing those at 5 dollars each, the value of an LTS can rapidly skyrocket.
ps. these will be eliminated with the coming skill revamp/change to kindergarten skill tree. I suggest wasting them now. I have about 50.

The problem with LTS is the same problem with a monthly sub. There are very few incentives to pay rather than go 2P once you hit the upper levels. At only 500 Zen, you would be better to take the $15.00 and just buy the zen.

30,000 zen? I feel as though I've been ripped off if that is true. I didn't start getting a zen stipend until after the game went f2p and I bought the LTS back when it was first offered in open beta.
pwe should have stopped selling the LTS years ago. Still support it and all, but stop selling it (because everything in it is useless atm).
And every year just make a new LTS. I know you are thinking "but they did that was the romulus and delta expansion". Not really. The delta expansion wasn't very good and after the ships, it didn't have anything substancial like a BOFF or monthly zen.
If they sold LTS II's where they had an extra 500 zen monthly and they ships and stuff, that would be better.
I would buy that. I have the LTS from the original beta and that only gives me 500 zen a month. I would buy another LTS for another 500 a month.
And that is the ONLY way Cryptic is getting a penny out of me because other than that original LTS, they haven't deserved any money from me.
I feel that the LTS value is a personal thing. Two people will always measure it worth differently. Me, I think the ship is rubbish. The LTS was worth it for me, however, as I enjoy the zen, I have 4 Borg toons, the respec tokens are fantastic to have and I love my Android BOFFs.
But then again these thing I enjoy may be meaningless to another player.
So.
Calculating its worth is impossible because it means different things to different people.
It's main value to me is to say "I support this game." I want to see it last a long time.
While I don't agree with some of the DR changes I would still purchase it today, even if I'm no longer confident I'll get a year's use out of it.
I enjoy getting to play Star Trek. Simple as that.

LTS players would no doubt continue to purchase beyond the monthly stipend, even if they were paying a subscription fee.
If the default model for future MMOs is to start as F2P or to transition to F2P, they should avoid giving into the minority of players who want LTS.
I have to disagree here... By offering something in the form of STO's LTS, even for a F2P title, makes sense from a business perspective...
Firstly, an LTS is a massive instant cash-injection for a developer... Whether this proves cost-effective in the long term is entirely speculation... Even the added CStore freebies that Cryptic offer can't necessarily be counted in monetary terms, as many people would not buy them if they weren't a free perk...
The spacesuits being a prime example, were they not free with the LTS, I couldn't see any reason to get them - I'd rather just pickup a cheap one off the exchange, and use what ever armour was going while leveling...
However, having said that, someone who is willing to drop (in STO's case) $200 or $300 is very likely to then spend more money, since they've already shattered the 'first purchase barrier' and may even feel compelled to spend more money again to keep their investment going, in order to justify their initial outlay in the first place...
And, in the event such a player then drops off early, that's several hundred dollars the developer has made from them that they would not have otherwise...
There's pros and cons, but I think for the most part, LTS style subscriptions are indeed a wise option for F2P MMO's... Anecdotally, if they weren't, they'd very quickly be pulled from sale...
