Scenario: It is the late 1960s, and rather than cancelling the original series, the network gives it a one year reprieve (This will bring it to four seasons like Enterprise.) As a condition, you are given the helm of the show, and told that in the course of a 24-episode season, you must tell the tale of both the 4th and the 5th year of the five year mission. Unbeknownst to anyone, you're a time traveler from the year 2015, and have full knowledge of all shows, books, fan works, etc. that existed until the moment you stepped through the time portal.
What tales do you tell? All original? Reworkings of some of the best tales from TAS, TNG, or any other series? Scripting the best novels and fan writings? Doing the movies (including the alt-universe) as TV events? Do you introduce characters and species famous later but not seen in TOS, such as Cardassians and Ferengi? Do you bring back characters, planets and situations for a second episode (or more)? Do you tell morality tales, romances, comedy stories, powerful dramas and intrigues? Do you avoid fighting altogether, preferring to have characters rationalize their way through problems, or make everything a shoot-out?
For purposes of this discussion, assume that a seasonal break occurs after the 12th episode, and that it has been suggested, not demanded, that you either divide the voyage years over the seasonal break or that you give a cliffhanger, or both. Also keep in mind that you may want to do The Motion Picture, but you still have the shoestring budget and limited special effects of the 1960s.
I'll prepare my list, but I don't want to influence the creativity up front. Give us your best shot!
I'd do a couple of the better TAS episodes and have a time-travel episode where they go back and meet the crew of the NX-01, who I'd make just as multiethnic as the TOS cast and considerably less asinine than the version of the ENT cast we know and hate.
I'd bring back the Gorn, for sure, and have a loose plot arc involving Captain Kang as a sort of antagonist, not really a "bad guy", but a good, honorable Klingon warrior. Because he was cool and his actor was an awesome guy.
Also, Sulu would fence a Klingon leader and win because he's Sulu.
Erm.... I'd count TAS as season 4, thus it'd be season 5 I'd be making.
Although I suppose that redoing the TAS eps is a viable option. Some of them were quite good. And some of those that were less good, could be made a lot better with a subtle reworking.
Anyways, lack of combat = boring. Lack of story = confusing.
therefore there must be balance. :P
I'd delve into things that were alluded to have happened in that time period that we didn't get to see.
Its tough to answer, a lot could happen in 2 years, on tour.
My favorite trek episode is Balance of Terror, starring the brilliant actor Mark Lenard as the Romulan commander.
Would've loved it, if they had fleshed out that storyline more. He would've made a great recurring villian for the series.
You know, in reality, how cool would it be to animate and re animate all of tos using the original audio?
I think we could finally see it the way it was imagined without the cutoff you get with cg.
But as for a season in the 60's..... Idk tos was a little too standalone per episode so there realm isn't any story arc that needs completed. And i don't think a single season would be a good place to start one.
That said I would probably set up some kind of lead in for tmp.
As a time traveller, Am I supposed to pack underwear or underwhen?

I'd definitely do an 2-part episode where they time travel to the NX-01, set down some hard continuity within those two episodes and basically make it where the current version of "Enterprise" is erased, because seriously, f*** that show.
I'd've done some of the Phase II episodes with Ilia, Decker and Xon, as well as introducing Dr Elise McKennah, closing the season with Spock returning to Vulcan to undertake the kolinahr...
A 4th season of TOS for me wouldve started with James T Kirk being promoted to admiral and the command of the enterprise given to spock.
And wouldve had more emphasis on the cultures of star trek as per exploration each new race would be explored in greater detail perhpas evan doing a whole season on let say federation romulan relations.
as we know not much was done during TOS with the romulans and i think a 4th season with spock at the helm coulve focused on that and been the origin point for spocks desire to unite both vulcans and romulans.

I like how you think.
This is how I see it. As far as I'm concerned, TAS is the 4th season.
