So I did a little experiment today upgrading a common Romulan Mk I Split Beam Pistol and Piercing Rifle, sold from the New Romulus vendor, all the way to Mk XIV very rare. Unfortunately the appearance of these weapons did not change from Mk I to Mk XIV.
These are the Mk I weapons that have been upgraded to Mk XIV. They remain the same in appearance as a common Mk I.
These are Mk XI very rare weapons (same types) that I acquired from the dilithium store before they were removed.
I know that the common weapons change appearance as they increase in grade when you purchase them. I believe the same principle applied to the uncommons, rares, and very rares once sold in the dil store. Unfortunately upgrading them doesn't seem to have the same affect, and their appearance remains the same.
Good news is, the vendor weapons are bound to account on equip, so you can trade them between characters or sell on the exchange. Despite the lesser aesthetics, these weapons are still top notch in performance.

The higher mark rifle models never bothered me as much as the higher mark pistols, but at the same time, I'm fine with them using the mk I models.
I actually wish this was the case for all the common weapon types -- the lower mark stuff tends to be less ridiculous looking.
But yeah, not sure why they made several models.
Maybe they made several as proof of concept, were trying to decide which to use and decided to use several?

simple: start a new toon, play or skip the tutorial (you get them either way) send gear to the other toon via mail or account bank, then upgrade as you please!

I can buy it from the equipment vendor on ESD
but if I could craft it I could get decent mods on a mk2 like critDx3 at mk2
