Right i have been playing this game 3-4 year a 200+ veteran i know what but money got tight and easier to save on that and in that time i have bought a decent amount of keys to open the lock-boxes and always prayed i got something decent as you do a nice new ship who wouldnt say no to that and i have never and i mean never got a ship from lock boxes in that time over the past 2 weeks i got over 50 keys from either buying on zen store or what i got from the exchange from stuff i got from the lock boxes and selling so yeah quite miffed as you would the only ships i have ever got from lock boxes are ones i have either bought off the exchange for silly money or a mate got the same ship over and over again and give me one.
Its annoying i did 25 boxes after each other and most i got was duty officers or some consoles yet i saw someone get the same ship 4 times so im under the impression the game hates me.
I know its kind of petty and whatever you get from them is random but what do you have to do to get a decent ship from them i see everybody else getting them multi times yet i get duty officers im doing something wrong i just dont know what..
The chance of getting the jackpot-prize ship from a lockbox is something under half a percent. So, for every person you see getting a ship, there's two hundred or more who opened a box round about the same time and didn't.
The game doesn't hate you, in particular. The game - in this respect - has plenty of hate for everyone.
The percentage is closer to 0.38% chance for the rarest of ships. I've been stupid in the past, dropping close to $400 for for the Wells class ship by opening boxes.
I could have spent a quarter of that on keys, and used the EC to buy the ship directly. Lesson learned.
I was lucky and on the 4th R&D box got the sheshar, but I was after R&D materials at the time. They sold better and for a higher return than keyes did at that time. Today the market has stabilized more and R&D materials are dropping in price.
The rumoured T6 'Bug' looks like it will be another R&D pack release - which I am very fine with. I plan to buy R&D packs anyways for the research boosts.
I got a Wells ship on my third ever lockbox. Opened maybe 20 or so since with keys bought from the exchange and got nothing of interest. Not something I'd spend real money or Zen on.
From what I've read your chances varies depending on the ship. But it is never more than 0.5% and your chances do not increase the more lock boxes you open. So basically under the best circumstances you have a 1 in 200 chance of winning a lock box ship (mirror universe ships do not apply).
Trying to gain a ship via lockboxes is like trying to win the lottery by buying scratch-it's. Futile. You might get lucky. You MIGHT hit the jackpot. Chances are, more than not, you'll get the consolation prize.
At least you can see the duty officers, etc. But for the ships, the above posters are correct: it is FAR less expensive to save up the credits to buy the ship (a 100% chance of success) vs spending an unlimited amount of money hoping for one (<5% chance)
I always thought I was lucky to get Mirror Universe ships in lock boxes; I got more than one for each of my 4 characters. Sadly, despite the success I had with those ships, they are not upgradeable, and falling further behind the tech curve. I've opened >170 boxes in hopes of getting one of the T5 ships, but no joy. Now that I have 3 T5U & 2 T6 ships on each character, I open boxes more for the Lobi. If I ever get a T5 lock box ship, it will just be gravy...:o

It's really closer to 0.5% from repeated testing and I've never heard of a ship that varied when people did in-depth testing. Any one person's attempt is going to have sampling error. One person could open a billion boxes and never get a ship. Another could open one box and get a ship. The average however is 0.5% chance. (I've heard 0.6% and 0.4%; I'm confident those are the result of insufficient testing and sampling errors.)
The best way to conduct a test would be to copy a character to Tribble multiple times and open boxes. People have done that.
The odds are higher per box on R&D box ships but the average monetary cost of acquisition is the same.
They balance the odds of getting a ship around the average cost of getting one.

If you want to buy a ship rather than save, one of the more reliable routes is generally to spend $40-100 on lockbox keys and sell those on the exchange. Generally for around 2 million EC a piece. How much the cost of the ship you want will vary. Most new lockbox ships will cost you $40-60 worth of keys translated into EC to acquire.
If you have tons of Lobi due to opening boxes or giveaways, see what Lobi ships are selling best on the exchange. Buy one. Sell it. Use the EC to buy the ship you want.
As a rule, unless a box has lots of other things you want and do not have, you're best off not opening boxes for Lobi either. Lobi is mainly handy for things in the Lobi store that bind on pickup.
If you can get it on the exchange, try that first. If you have money you want to spend to get those items, items like keys that can be sold on the exchange are a good way to get the EC.

You could have spent zilcho by going the contraband route. But like you say, you live and learn.
I always thought it was a higher % chance to get a ship from a lock-box..
I did try the buy keys sell keys and then buy the ship i wanted.
But when you see other people getting them over and over your like il give it a chance and that the next one you open will have it in then 15 boxes later your still waiting. I know you can earn the money from what you get from a lockbox but then your gambling on getting a decent console.
