Lenard Nimoy must have had a charity or 30 he realy loved. Why not give us the option to buy a trophy for our ship or starbase display with a small store purchase for his charity. WOW has long been a proponent of micro transaction pets for charities.
Edit : simply put a memorial in a game is not something that I would value if I passed but a donation to a charity is a long held funeral rite all over the world. In lue of flowers donate in the fallen persons name to such and such charity. Thats real . Thats tangible.
Well considering, despite anything they did or did not do AFTER STVI, they were the crew of the Enterprise, and saved the federation, earth, space-time, galaxy, etc more times than any other 6 crews combined. That plaque to George and Gracie at SFA wouldn't be there, nor would SFA, without them
edit:
memorial doesn't mean statue. It can be as simple as a memorial plaque or grand and massive. I don't think anyone wants a 30 foot tall spock statue. Tho a 30 foot tall ToS Connie would be a cool monument for the whole original cast.. Just add the names as they pass IRL
We don't know what the other ships and the crews that served them did to save the Federation, the Galaxy, or whatnot. The U.S.S. NamedShip wasn't the only one out there poking the universe with a stick. They were the ones to have a series focused on them, and got to live to tell the tale (unless you wore a red shirt and were not a main cast member). Look at how high the ship registry numbers got. No matter how you look at it that's a lot of ships. The Enterprise wasn't the only one carrying the load.
To me, it just seems out of place and disproportionate to focus on that handful of people by making in game monuments or memorials.
It's already a memorial, what better place to hold a hall of fame? Might give more people reason to go there too, especially if there was a mini-game or two included; maybe in the form of a random quiz on the actor/actress in question?
I'm thinking something like the Academy event, by where you get a daily, are presented with a specific question on a specific actor/actress, and then are presented with three answers. If you answer right, you get 450/950 dilithium, if you answer wrong, you get nothing. Something simple, yet effective and with a purpose to travel.
Those were equally interesting characters and deserve the same attention, on this day that their fellow colleague and helping founder of the series that most of us love... Yet are now missing from the puzzle.
Hall of heroes.
He just died. Right now. Stop being an *******.
I have no problem respecting those other people you mentioned. But right now its about showing respect for the person who JUST past away.
Edit: He was not just a 'character' nor was Doohan, or Kelley. They made the world a little bit different, and a little bit better. All should be respected for this. But he having just past away - we can respect him in the present.
A memorial would be fine for all the actors/writers/creators
I mean we ask for one for Leonard but not for Gene? Lets just do a big one, kinda like a ship plaque somewhere and just add the names as they come.
For those that think it will break immersion, no one is forcing you to go to this spot if and when it comes, so get off your high horses about immersion. Its a game in the first place.
We need a way to honor all of those who have been part of the universe that we enjoy to be in.
I don't actually think it is a bad idea to pay respects to Scotty and Bones. However, Scotty and Bones both have characters already in the game in the form of the time-travel missions in Night of the Comet. Spock has nothing at the moment other than some voice over work.
If we wanted to honor Spock, I agree that New Romulus is a great place to do it. I also think that a Spock-class science vessel designed as an update to the D'Kyr might be nice.
As for Scotty and Bones--adding a memorial plaque for Scotty in the Jenolan Sphere recognizing his contribution to its discover and legacy would be great. Bones might make a good name sake for a new class of science/medical vessels, the McCoy-class. If Starfleet Medical is ever added, that might be a great place to recognize him as well.
I am not gonna be popular with this opinion but maybe we shouldn't have any memorials IN GAME that honor a Leonard Nimoy or James Doohan, etc etc
You can mention them in the credits of the game... where it is appropriate. But to honor in game breaks immersion... people want to feel this is the future universe of Star Trek... to say the actors who played them are honored in that world... breaks the fourth wall or whatever.
We can honor their memory in game by meeting at Vulcan, which is a great sentiment, but to have a lasting memorial that is IN-GAME is out of place a little.
I would say, a statue of Spock, not Nimoy, be erected. One on Vulcan, without question, and perhaps one at starfleet academy as well. I agree that honoring Leonard Nimoy would indeed disrupt the immersion into the game itself, but we can't have there not be a lasting tribute to him somehow. It just feels wrong.
Spock saved a large chunk of the galaxy by stopping the Hobus supernova. He did his best to save the Romulan to, but he was too late.
I think there are a lot of reasons why both the Romulan and the Vulcan would want to honor him. Even the Klingons, considering he was a worthy opponent for years.
Those were equally interesting characters and deserve the same attention, on this day that their fellow colleague and helping founder of the series that most of us love... Yet are now missing from the puzzle.
Don't forget, Nimoy was directly involved with STO. A fact sadly that none of already gone cast could have done.
If using that argument, then what about Majel Barrett-Roddenberry? Her voice work is EVERYWHERE (not just in STO).
I would enjoy a "hall of heroes"-type memorial, based at Starfleet Academy, that would immortalize those that contributed to Star Trek (not just STO, as it wouldn't exist without Trek). Mr. and Mrs. Roddenberry, Kelley, Doohan, Nimoy...and even though obviously the desire would be to focus on ToS, you'd still have to give credit where credit is due to those that made the movies and various series (after all, no Voyager, no DR...wait a second, hmmm, slingshot around the sun anyone?). Just do it similarly to how you immortalized the various Enterprises or various uniforms on the fleet starbase. "These are our founding fathers (and mothers) that made it all possible", leaving enough room to credit those that brought us all to the game in the first place.
And, when his time comes, make sure you put Shatner in a suit singing "Rocket Man"...nah, just kidding. You'd have to also have Nimoy singing "Ballad of Bilbo Baggins" in that case. But Nichols doing the fan dance...hmmm...
As far as "breaking the fourth wall", I don't think it would risk immersive gameplay in the slightest as it would be in an isolated portion of the map and could only be visited by choice (for those that would insist on pure RP).
This is my signature. There are many like it, but this one is mine.
But I still don't see that as being worthy of being idolized (statuefied?). I think rather the monument lies in the contributions they made being carried forward. Having a starship named after you is pretty standard though.
If they were Klingon, then yes, certainly. The Klingons are real big on statues, and monuments and songs dedicated to their heroes.
I think a Romulan statue would work.
But if we're talking about a tribute to the characters' service...?
Why not plug a TOS bridge onto a Holodeck at the Academy and just have Spock, Scotty, and McCoy at their typical bridge stations. Scotty at the bridge engineering, Spock at the bridge science and McCoy beside the captain's chair.
A statue might not be Federation style but a museum somewhere with Natural History Museum style diorama of the various Trek eras seems appropriate to me. I'd love to see a 25th century style take on the Smithsonian. There are ways you could set an amazing mission at such a location. It would work well as a social and event hub as well.
Or a Holodeck, as I say.
But in the longterm, I think a cross-factional galactic history museum to explore with exhibits would be great and I'd totally support a Featured Episode and events being set there to justify the construction. (For eras where we don't have ship interior assets, you could show an Enterprise era landing party with MACOs or the like.) Not every display would be the Enterprise crew, obviously. The Enterprise exhibit might feature the Columbia landing party or another NX class ship (hint: Thomas, make those extra patches) and we might see a memorial to the crew of the TOS Defiant or the like (which means some new TOS chest badges but no actor likeness issues).
But you could make a point to have the TOS era characters who Cryptic does have permission to use at an extra-prominent display which might be a cutaway of the TOS bridge populated by the Spock, Bones, and Scotty.
Maybe get a holographic version of an aged Admiral Chekov or the like as the museum's custodian if you could identify one classic Trek actor like Koenig who wouldn't fit well elsewhere in the game.
Or heck, Tom Paris or Will Riker, who were history buffs. Cast Frakes as a Will Riker-modeled Historical Services Hologram or something and have him curate the museum and join us on a mission, maybe with a cameo bit where we see Holo-Riker and Admiral Riker together.
Those were equally interesting characters and deserve the same attention, on this day that their fellow colleague and helping founder of the series that most of us love... Yet are now missing from the puzzle.

The academy would be proper, don't you think..? Use one of those empty shells looking like buildings...
After all, at least 2 of the officers from the enterprise had been teaching at the academy (4 if you accept the very well done game "Starfleet academy" as soft canon).
Don't remind me.
This is all good. but since (in game) all the original crew would have departed by this time. you would need a memorial for the entire crew. I think a set up similar to the uniform display at fleet starbases but in one of the empty buildings at SFA. you know it could be multi floored. and each floor could be dedicated to a different era. starting with Cochrane. than Archer. TOS and so on.
Yes Nimoy was the most recent but the others (James Doohan or DeForest Kelley) have also made an impact. it dosnt have to be all dun today. every now again with a season update or couple of weeks with the maintenance STO could add a new era/crew. include ships, crew and defining events form each series/era/crew.
Same with Klingon Academy and new Romulas. having there own (Hall of heros) style set up.
Some where on a planet like nimbus (only so all can visit). maybe the other side of the planet. could be a memorial of the same but add all the Starfleet, Klingon, romulan and some other random races memorials.
PS. you could have someone. a background NPC saying how ambassador Sarek sort of looks like that Romulan captain.
PSS. you would also maybe want the home planet of each crew to have a memorial of some sort. they don't have to be all unique. use the same memorial set up on at each location.

I agree. Well said.

He asks a fair question. No need to insult.
People need to ease up and not go off the deep end.
It is not a fair question actually...
If it was a week, maybe two away - then yes.
Right now, you can show respect by simply saying goodbye - without crass comparisons.
It certainly is fair.
There are several ways to show respect to someone. Following the herd is merely one of them.
You are not the morality police.
