Let us say the oft-desired return to television of Trek finally happens. Of those actors who have never been on Trek (at least in a major or important secondary role), regardless of gender, who would you pick as best fit to be the next important...
1. Klingon?
2. Ferengi?
3. Cardassian?
4. Vulcan?
5. Andorian?
6. Tellerite?
7. Orion?
8. Starfleet Admiral (regardless of species)?
9. Non-human who serves as a study of humanity (like Spock or Data)?
10. Any other species/type to which you really wish to link a specific actor?
1) Jason Momoa
2) Chris Barrie, Red Dwarf fans will know what I mean
3) Charles Dance
4) Lena Headey for female/Charles Dance for male, both are very good actors
5) Chris Judge
7) Emma Stone
8) Amanda Tapping for female Starfleet admiral
9) Lexa Doig
10) WWE's Kane for Jem Hadar
"The meaning of victory is not to merely defeat your enemy but to destroy him, to completely eradicate him from living memory, to leave no remnant of his endeavours, to crush utterly his achievement and remove from all record his every trace of existence. From that defeat no enemy can ever recover. That is the meaning of victory."
-Lord Commander Solar Macharius
possibly, but i couldnt think of another actor that could play the passive smug cynicism i associate with vulcans quite the way i think weaving could.
honestly, Jim Carrey or Michael Shanks would be people i would cast as romulan depending on what i wanted to convey.
though thats down to my thinking that romulans may well be a race of trolls that will mess with others for little more reason than to see the response.
I think you have the Romulans confused with the Q. The Romulans were a bunch of sneaky opportunists that only cared about themselves.
This thread took off in ways I had not imagined, and I'm really impressed with the results: some really funny, some thought provoking. I've no way to responding to all the incredible suggestions, at least without a really, really long post, but maybe at some point I'll compile a list of my favorites from your recommendations.
One correction I'd like to add to my OP...the Romulans should have been represented on my list. My thanks to those who've gone ahead and posted suggestions for such. Lets make "Romulan" line #11.
You realise we're supposed to portray people who have never touched Trek in a significant way before, right?
Which, unfortunately, means Jeffrey Coombs is also out. Damn.
Exactly. My desire for just this thread was to avoid endless recycling of names we already associate with Trek, and possibly bring to light some undiscovered, powerful talent that should be considered. Trust me, I'd go for a rehash of Trek actors, too, and Jeffrey Coombs would be at the top of every part to be cast. I'd like to cast Casey Biggs again as well. But lets save that for another thread.
I don't know enough actors to put out a serious response, so picture this:
1. Klingon: Johnny Depp.
2. Ferengi: Johnny Depp.
3. Cardassian: Johnny Depp.
4. Vulcan: Johnny Depp.
5. Andorian: Johnny Depp.
6. Tellerite: Johnny Depp.
7. Orion: Johnny Depp.
8. Starfleet Admiral (regardless of species: Johnny Depp.
9. Non-human who serves as a study of humanity (like Spock or Data): Johnny Depp.
10. Borg: Johnny Depp.
11. Horta: Johnny Depp.
12: Khan: Johnny Depp
Looong LOL, but still thought provoking. Depp as Horta is just crazy enough to work, and Depp as Khan would having me pulling out the greenbacks for a ticket immediately. I think Depp as Cardassian or Ferengi though are the best matches. The latter is obvious, with his track record of quirky characters. The Cardassian though would work well as an intelligence agent, not unlike Garrak.
Vulcan - Alan Rickman
Ferengi - Andy Serkis
Starfleet Admiral - Edward James Olmos
Study of the human condition - Ships Computers A.I. (able to upload to Android body or project Photonically), first ever self-aware A.I. - Peter Cullen
1. Gerard Butler
2. Johnny Depp
3. Johnny Depp
4. Keira Knightley
5. Luisana Lopilato
6. Ben Kingsley/Tommy Flanagan
7. Megan Fox
8. Bruce Willis/Samuel L. Jackson/Jason Statham/Jean Reno
9. Hugo Weaving
10. Hillary Swank in a Romulan role
1. Gerard Butler
2. Johnny Depp
3. Johnny Depp
4. Keira Knightley
5. Luisana Lopilato
6. Ben Kingsley/Tommy Flanagan
7. Megan Fox
8. Bruce Willis/Samuel L. Jackson/Jason Statham/Jean Reno
9. Hugo Weaving
10. Hillary Swank in a Romulan role
That is all.
EDIT:
11. Justin Bieber as Wesley Crusher :P
*runs back under the bridge*
I see what you did there.
As for my list every actor I'd want to see is mentioned. But I'd love to see Depp playing something. A horta would be an interesting idea.

I think Kate Mulgrew would make a very good Klingon noblewoman.
