Earth: Revisited

So back when Taco and Pals were revamping ESD to the new awesome version, Earth was briefly made a part of the skyfile instead of being a 3D object on the map on Tribble. It was well received by many of the testers at the time for capturing the feel of a large planet. Unfortunately, the Art Lead at the time made the call to turn Earth back into the smaller 3D object. It was a bummer to a decent number of us who really liked Earth as a part of the skyfile.

To be fair, I do understand that some players like to fly around Earth to see their own country or take screenshots and such. However, it's still my own personal opinion that the skyfile version was much better. On top of that Earth still looks like this, which in my opinion doesn't look all that great. I took that shot just now on Holodeck.

However, we now have a new Art Lead as indicated by the recent dev blog. I'd like to revisit this topic and see how our new Art Lead as well as the environment team and my fellow players feel about making Earth a part of the skyfile once again.

I totally agree, Earth as part of the sky file meant it could have a nice amount of detail. TBH I'd like to see the stars sorted out, the background space of Earth looks quite bad compared to others. Or is that just me?

So, first off, I think there's actually a bug right now that's keeping the high res versions of textures from loading. So Earth probably shouldn't look as bad as it does in your screenshot. (I don't remember it looking like that when I hooked it up.)

The 3D Earth call was mostly design from what I remember. Long have I tilted at the skyfile planet windmill, but other than a few select cases, I get denied. You can poke our new EP, or Swallrus about it if you'd like, but I wouldn't expect it to change.

Fair enough, thanks for checking in Taco. I just thought I'd give it another shot since there's a new Art Lead and EP in the house. I also have no idea how long Earth has been looking like that, so I wasn't aware it was a bug. I only remember a few people complaining about how low res it looked some time ago and just assumed it's been that way for a while now. My bad.

There was a small introduction blurb on the Command ship blog under the first picture. I missed it the first time around myself until people started talking about the new guy. :P

Yeah, Taco, Earth has looked like that for as long as the game has been out. Looks like that in the foundry too. I don't think most people noticed since ESD is over the ocean (and no one complains that flat blue is low quality). If there's something preventing HD Earth, please look into it. Otherwise, I'm claiming V'Giny got at it.

to bad, as the Kobali Space Map and the Space Map from the Mission Alpha are both visually awesome.

I wouldn't mind day and night cycles like those found on Risa. :)
