hojain2020hojain2020 Member Posts: 417 Arc User
For the experienced guys... what does it cost/time wise for an f2p player to become competitive in STO aka i can do 40 k in my paid scimitar?
considering that the F2P player will spend all the hours first finishing "free" content ?

It depends on how smart you are. The only thing stopping you directly is the EC cap. That is the biggest paywall you will actually need to overcome as an f2p player if having a really big DPS e-peen is your goal.

Once that is removed, anything is attainable when you are able to wade into the in-game economy with the rest of the big fish, barring a few special perks such as the Veteran reward ships. But there are so many ships available that they would hardly be necessary to achieve your goals.

Right now, with the Anniversary Event running, you could feasibly put together a fairly decent build using only episode rewards and the T6 Samsar, without having to spend a single credit, by replaying those episodes which reward high quality weapons and gear...

Rare/Very Rare Mk XI/XII/XIII is not BiS, but it'll do the job if money is a problem...

Whats the DPs on the freebie samsar in your estimation? 18k... 22 k.. or 30+K for an ISA run

Hmm so to get competitive say 1 year ? 6 months? 3 months? ( and yes money is "always" the problem )

No idea... Alot of variables, right down to what Boffs you have access to... Alot of it also comes down to the ability of the player as well... I was only throwing that out as an option if money was a concern...

As I said, it was just an option that should pull reasonable DPS without even having to spend a credit if you'd prefer not to...

As far as the time required, all comes down to how quickly you can get the Samsar and then replay the episodes until you have a full ship setup...

You don't need 40k dps to be competitive. Well...if you're talking about competing with the top players of the game, you're gonna need way more than just 40k. That's not even middle of the road on the DPS scale.

But, if you're talking about what you actually need to participate in the higher difficulty STFs, you really only need 10k+. More is obviously better, but if you can manage 10k, at least, you're already doing better than most of the people who que up for pugs these days.

After that, it's more about knowing what to do, and joining a team that can also do about 10k+ damage...and also knows what to do.

I guess the question is.. what are your goal-posts? What are you wanting to be 'competitive' with?

The upper range is stupidly inflated, both in cost to gear up and how much it explodes in performance.

To be able to hold your own in, say, Advanced Queues level, really doesn't cost much - just understanding mechanics.

Elite queues.. is where you'll start looking into 100+ Million EC investments.

So hitting 10 k with the right groups and right strategy shpuld be good. Is this just for normal ques?

No, should be fine for almost all.

Advanced Borg STF, Vicious Cycle Elite ec.

Most of my toons do some 10k DPS, some 20-30k. In my opinion if you contribute 10k to a match and, what’s more important, play by basic and common strategies you will be a reliable team mate. Do not worry. Tinkering out a starship build and implement it is a more or less long term goal in this game. See it as working progress. The moment you are around 10k you should be good enough for 90% of the PvE contend this games throws at you and your friends. :)

No, I'm talking about Advanced and Elite. Some Elite STFs, like The Hive: Space, might need a tad better gear in terms of both dps and survivability, but again, decent dps, a decent understanding of mechanics, and decent team is still all that you need for most of the harder STFs.
