BOFF Thank you!!!

I think far too many people like to bad mouth Cryptic because the players are "fans" of Star Trek. I would like to just say thank you to Cryptic for finally implementing the new bridge officer system. It is freaking amazing! I lost a power or two on some of my characters and I understand that you guys are working on fixing a few things.... But, it works fantastically! People are crafting T3 powers and selling them for reasonable prices. It's about time. No longer getting screwed for a BO that have a specific power. Seriously, fellow players hit the exchange and look at what you can get for about 250,000 ECs. Surgical Strikes 3, BFAW3, and so forth. Even the people who can craft command spec powers are being reasonable. I also like the fact that the Kobali engineer packs give you 3 R&D DOFFs and have brought the exchange closer to a reasonable price for special DOFFs. People are going to hate no matter what, but good let the trolls leave and leave the game to the fans and players. I mean it's pretty disheartening when people just whine and complain... but I guess they feel that they're entitled. ;) *waaa waaa I didn't get x2 dil on my marks. But back on the positive thank you again for finally delivering on the skill trainer piece., the secondary deflectors, and the Enterprise MACO outfit. Yes I caught your Easter egg in the revamped Romulan missions, I saw partial gear on a Rommie and it looks nice. And... it seems you guys are trying to get an interest back in ground missions with the new command powers? Hopefully thats the case.

That's my two cents. Look at my posts and you'll see I'm not a troll or a white knight, just a ST fan who plays STO and thinks that you guys should get some positive reinforcement every now and then.

Have to say I agree with the OP, I think...heh, eyes started to swim reading that; but yeah, there are some kinks to work out (including the missing Rare Rank III's) - but I definitely dig the new system.

All the information for available abilities viewable from anywhere, with actual stats instead of just narrative. The ability to train the Specializations. Switching out the BOFF abilities like that. And well, I'd go on more about it...but I'm really ticked off about all the lag since the Anniversary patch; so it's hard to toss them any kudos right now. But yeah, they've got an 'atta boy for it all the same...been something "coming" for a long time.

There were good intentions with this system. Unfortunately it launched incomplete as we are no longer able to train our bridge officers with rare bridge officer abilities that were only obtainable from bridge officer candidates. What's worse is this completely slipped Cryptic's minds and at the time of the anniversary update, they hadn't even begun to work out how to address this issue. At all.

I wouldn't be surprised if they still haven't figured out what to do about this. Players have already suggested ways to implement these abilities back into the game, but every single idea so far probably went past Cryptic's heads...

It didn't. They fully acknowledged these abilities weren't shipping with the update, and that they were discussing internally how to release them into the game.

That's lingo for how to further monetize them over the 200dil currently charged for captain trained abilities.

True, but it now occurs everywhere and the ability activation lag has increased beyond usable measure in a lot of cases. I've popped more since the patch due to heals not going off than I ever did when I first started the game as a noob!

I do like the new system a lot, minus the missing skills.

However, I've spent 2 million Expertise, 10 million EC, and about 100,000 Dilithium on training charecters on my main toon so far...

Thats not cheap, especially the Expertise.

I really like being able to easily share captain skills like Grav Well 3 with my other captains.

I really like boffs being able to remember every skill they ever learn, and for you to be able to togggle those skills at almost any time. You now only need 2 of each type (science, eng, tac) for ship stations instead of switching doffs to switch ships / loadouts, or needing to make a trip to the boff trainer and losing the old skills.

Currently there are 2 flaws that Cryptic really needs to address:

    1. Boff-only level 3 skills can't be trained or transferred. If a captain can't craft a PADD you're out of luck.

    2. The loadout bugs mean your stations and skill choices will randomly reset, and the UI might or might not let you fix things.

If Cryptic actually fixes these instead of saying "close enough, our work is done" then to me the change will (eventually) be entirely for the good.

I'll disagree with any complaints about the dil cost since you can earn 2420 dil just by doing the New Romulus daily (720 + 5*340 for the marks, enough dil for 12 PADDs).
However, I've spent 2 million Expertise, 10 million EC, and about 100,000 Dilithium on training charecters on my main toon so far...
What? 200 dil per PADD = 500 PADDs for 100,000 dil. Unless you can't bear to wait a little while for the normal crafting time.

I'm a filthy casual peasent here, so I'm just curious, what were these rare BOff canidate only abilities I've heard people mention? I've never really taken the time to pay too much attention to the different BOff powers til now since I can swap them at will.

I may have done the math wrong on the pads... I've crafted over 100 of them, but haven't done the "buy now" option.

Its mostly the Expertise that gets my attention.

I started with 6 million and have 4 million now due to this. When you train a BO in ALL their skills possible, including training them in Intel skills, the price per training gets up to around 10,000 expertise per skill!

Sure, but now you CAN train them that way, instead of them only knowing 1 skill per rank.

Besides, how likely are you to ever need that expertise for something else? I can't recall ever being low on expertise except for alts early on while leveling.
