Dr. Charles H. Townes has died. Known worldwide, Dr. Townes was a celebrity, of sorts, in our shared western South Carolina, USA home region. The largest city in the area, Greenville, has a statue to him on their award-winning Main Street.

Dr. Townes is locally nicknamed "The Father of the Laser" (I've no idea if the nickname reaches beyond here). He was a top pioneer in both the maser and the laser, and shared a Nobel prize for his efforts. If you think about it, his real-life efforts were likely the turning point in sci-fi from "death ray" and "heat ray" to "laser" and eventually "phaser" for us Trek folk. Our lives nowadays could not exist without the laser, which exists in so much of our technology. In respect, a year ago I named my science ship is named for him.

RIP, and thank you for bettering our lives.
