The appeal of privateering?

rogueeenterpriserogueeenterprise Member Posts: 299 Arc User
Hey everyone, I know that, at least a while ago, there were some forum-goers that were very gung-ho about wanting to play more of a privateer/independent type character that wouldn't quite be in line with the usual Starfleet or KDF "do-gooders".

I wanted to ask the general forum-goers now that might share this same opinion: what about playing this kind of role appeals to you? Full disclosure: I've got some Foundry mission ideas simmering that might go along with this, but when answering, you don't have to think about it in that context (let me take care of that part).

Some examples of what I'm going after:

I want to be able to be on "no one's side"
I want to be able to make my own "grey area"/criminal empire
I want to be an independent trader just making cargo runs and getting paid latinum
I want to take down any Starfleet ships that get in my way, even though I'm a human
I want to be working as a double agent against Starfleet

Let me see what you've got!

A bunch of people want to insert Han Solo into Star Trek.

The shocking reality is that that sort of character would most likely resemble this fine chap here.

Well, hell, I've already been writing Brokosh as having been a mercenary working the fringe planets (Nimbus III, Turkana IV, Farius Prime, etc.) before he ran into money problems and joined up with the KDF for a steadier paycheck.

Not everywhere in the galaxy is as well-off as Earth. Hell, not everywhere in the Federation is as well-off as Earth. It's only a post-scarcity economy on the developed core planets. And that means crime and instability, a perfect habitat for those who work where the law don't reach.

We can't just have a nice picture of Captain Harcourt Mudd, can we?

No, we gotta analyze the socio-political state of the terminus systems and the plight of the fringe colonies.

UUUUUGH. I thought that stuff died out with the Maquis. I'm a Federation captain. My job description is : Shoots aliens, save the day, don't flush redshirts out the airlock. I'm doing two for three, so can I please just enjoy the little things in life without being reminded that the galaxy is a terrible place?

But I don't wanna be Han Solo! I wanna play Luke Skywalker! I have the robes an' the lightsaber an' all!
You guys never let me play the way I want to! It's not fair! :P ;)

Kidding aside, the idea of being a KDF member who puts the interests of his House before the interests of the Empire or the Alliance is intriguing. I've even got a suggestion for a title: Letter of Marque.

    Or this example.

    Or, maybe, this one.

It might just be me, but the Klingons seem to have many occasional privateers in the ranks. The movies and shows are full of Klingons going rogue for their own personal benefit. Other times they were actually privateering (pirating on the Empire's behalf).

You can run certain dailies then sell your loot at drozana for a more independent feel. Might be the closest we'll get.

Indeed. I'm just saying, if you had your way, what would you WANT in the framework of STO to give it more of that same feel?

The pirate-like dailies were enough for me. An Empire contact asking me to steal this and disrupt that and then handing me a bucket of dilithium at the end. Though to think of it, a couple more of these would be nice.

Perhaps running these missions for a ferengi fence would fit the bill for pirating.
Edit: I could see myself doing this ^ with my fed aligned alien in his breen ships.

I like to see the following:

    - A new faction that's not limited to the established races already in STO.
    - Could include races exclusive to this faction only - Bandi, El-Aurian, Galamite, Iotian etc

    [ - Career options: - Freelancer Trader, MERC/Pirate , Politician/Administrator, Scientist
    - Would have access to old retrofitted ships T1 to T3 of the original factions (fed, Kedf)
    - Would have access to unique craft equivalent to T4 and T5 that would be trade explorers,
    freighters and mercenary vehicles

    - Cannot join existing fleets, nor ally with any one faction.
    - Can join 'Trade Guilds', work to build a Guild Drift (starbase) thats open to all factions
acts as a social Hub - think quarks x 100

    - Can create 'Guild Holdings', outposts
    - Can visit Starbases and homeworlds, where they have access to the exchanges for a small
    fee on each visit,m licensed.

    - Unique homeworlds that could beused as social or event zones.

    - Unique faction abilities: Can manufacture commodities and commonly used consumables
    - Can make commodities unique to the faction, by recipes

    - Can have access to any weapons on the open market

    - Unique R&D schools: Commodities & Reverse Engineering

    - Unique Crafting Specialization - "Reverse engineering"

Reverse Engineering - the ability to scavenge existing gear, and to craft a unique item. The ability would allow them to have limited control on the [procs] choices, create unusual mixed-energy type weapons, unusual ship components, and to recover parts and value from recovered materials for resale.

    - The ability to trade latinum, and unrefined dilithium with faction-aligned players.

you want that type of game play eve or freelancer or some other games like them. on sto this was suggested a few years ago, it never got anywhere, neither will this one.
    T6 Miranda Hero Ship FTW.
Been around since Dec 2010 on STO and bought LTS in Apr 2013 for STO.

I want you to think about something very very carefully.

Have you noticed how well the omega particle system works and the places where particles don't spawn which screws the mission? Have you noticed BOFFs unequipping from your ship?

Have you noticed the general level of QA in this game?

Do you think there is the most remote chance that they could EVER pull off the stuff you are asking for?

I am not saying that what you want is a bad idea just that cryptic could NEVER do it.
