So, after realizing that I wasn't going to be able to complete the daily Omega Molecule Stabilization mission, I decided to try my hand at just grinding Omega Particles to see what it would take just to make one Omega Technology upgrade. I found myself a decent, mostly empty instance around DS9 and got to it.
And that's when the enormity of having to do this from now until the end of the anniversary spread out before me.
Now, I'm no stranger to grinding. I've done so in previous events, both in STO and other MMOs, and right before the anniversary started, I was actually already grinding STFs for R&D mats. But the difference is, at least with most of those other grinds, I actually felt like I was playing the game itself, and not a minigame. I got to throw snowballs at assimilated snowborg, go hoverboarding on Risa, and do battle with the likes of Tholians, Undine, and bluegills. In short, despite the grind, I was still having fun.
Playing an inane, simplistic minigame, for hours at a time, for days at time, is not fun. At least not for me, regardless of the potential rewards.
So, quite simply, I'm just not gonna do it, I've decided. If they ever get the actual daily for it fixed, that's probably going to be it, and I'm just gonna sell whatever traces or slivers I earn on the Exchange. Goodness know there will be people willing to pay a pretty credit for them.
As for me, assuming I log into the game at all while all this anniversary craziness is going on, I'm gonna go back to the old fashion method of just shooting at stuff to get my rewards, and to hell with you and your (mini)games, Cryptic.
"There will never be enough blood to wash away my need for vengeance! A single world...I could destroy a million worlds and it would not be enough! Your existence is an insult to the memory of my people! I will continue my fight, even if I must fight alone!"
Amen. Sign me up with you, not going to do this or any other celebratory thing no matter what gifts and whatnot they throw at us. Fee stuff, bah, we work for it hours on end.
When you have to make a public declaration that you refuse to take any more abuse, it's pretty apparent that you've been taking a video game way too seriously.
Yeah, this mini-game and the overall way it was put into the game is just horrible. This is an anniversary event? I mean c'mon...really? Happy birthday! Spend hours standing in place and not playing an actual game! That's fun...? Right?
When you have to make a public declaration that you refuse to take any more abuse, it's pretty apparent that you've been taking a video game way too seriously.
You're absolutely right. Again, this whole anniversary fiasco might be finally what it takes for me to shrug, and just go play something else for awhile, if not indefinitely.

If it's read by them and if they take it to heart, it may change something.
Admittedly these are 2 big IFs, but it serves a purpose to vent the air that way.
Going silently, won't change anything at all. So try to change it at least.

See, your statement is not some grand rebellious decision - it's what normal rational adults do. Don't like something? Stop doing it.

Even normal rational adults occasionally need to declare that they're mad as hell, and not gonna take it anymore.
Partially out of the hope, however slim, that whom they are "rebelling" against might finally take notice, partially to seek solidarity among peers who might feel the same, and partially, because, sometimes, certain emotions just need to be expressed. We may be rational adults, but we're not Vulcans.

You're mad as hell at a minigame in a free-to-play video game based on a fictional universe. We're going in circles.
The 'mini-game event' turned ESD into a rubberband fest; took me 3x as long to get from the transporter pad to the exchange. I wish i could opt out... like an instance that has everything EXCEPT Q and his lag game. I don't need another ship. Nor do i want any ship bad enough to do something I find annoying. Normally such 'events' I just ignore and go on doing the stuff I do enjoy. However this particual event is affecting all 'social zones' with aggravating lag and THAT is preventing me and possibly others from simply ignoring this particular event while enjoying the parts we do find fun.
You're mad as hell at a minigame in a free-to-play video game based on a fictional universe. We're going in circles.
And you're bothered that I'm mad as hell at a minigame in a free-to-play video game based on a fictional universe? Why did you care enough to call me out on the fact that my post was stupid and pointless, if you really do feel that it is stupid and pointless?
"There will never be enough blood to wash away my need for vengeance! A single world...I could destroy a million worlds and it would not be enough! Your existence is an insult to the memory of my people! I will continue my fight, even if I must fight alone!"
It's a tough grind for a good reward. I think I would go insane if I tried to make say 50 upgrades. So I scale back to maybe like 10 or 15. I'm sure a few maniacs will make hundreds.
Captain Jean-Luc Picard: "We think we've come so far. Torture of heretics, burning of witches, it's all ancient history. Then - before you can blink an eye - suddenly it threatens to start all over again."
"With the first link, the chain is forged. The first speech censured, the first thought forbidden, the first freedom denied, chains us all irrevocably."
When you have to make a public declaration that you refuse to take any more abuse, it's pretty apparent that you've been taking a video game way too seriously.
while that may be true for this fella, the too serious part
this public declaration isn't the bellwether or indicator for that
I feel similar to the way this guy feels. For whatever benefit this minigame is supposed to give us, maybe if we play it 10,000 times we will TRIBBLE purples for a year, I don't know. But for whatever the reward is ... staring at a simple minigame that resembles a bait-ware mobile phone app ... it's just not worth it.
and it seems horribly out of place in an anniversary celebration. a scavenger hunt would have been better,
did I get the shotgun? yup did I do the icerace all over the place? yup and have I done countless other things in this game and other games for bits of reward here and there? yes
but the thing is, the main reason I was doing it was for the fun of it.
Actually I think its healthy to see statements like this. Devs whether you love them or hate them need our input as a group. I think its fair to say that many folk dislike the anniversary event mini game and many folk like it with a liberal sprinkling of 'who cares?'
Personally I'm lukewarm toward it. I'll grind out the daily for the Qmendations but could care less about the shards really what I get I get and I'll run them through the relatively simple crafting and probably sell the upgraded versions.
My personal constructive criticism for PWE is this: Please don't put this or any other event in social hubs. That was the main cause of the lag and rubber banding. Summer Event? Travel to Risa. Holiday? Another custom area (albeit accessed through ESD or your faction hub of choice) Regardless it kept the main social hub from being clogged and was easy enough to ignore if you wished.
Now on the subject of the mini game: Its frankly boring, about on par with scanning for materials or mining dilithium but more tedious if you choose to grind it. In fact as much as I love many things about STO Mini Games in general in this game..well...they suck to be blunt. They are however often the path to 'free' ships and bonuses. This game really isn't much worse than building sand castles on Risa or dancing by spamming emotes. I think the main difference I've noted here it being my first Anniversary event is that While Risa had some variety and fun things like jet packing around the island or racing hover boards (I enjoyed these, mileage of course may vary), this event is basically finding a couple locations and playing this uninspired game at least three times a day, if not more. Snore.
The story mission was a nice idea but it quickly wore thin for me after getting about halfway through when I hit areas of wandering through mazes and puzzles. Great story content linked directly to canon episodes but the 'game' portion suffers from the same problem as the mini games. namely trying to wedge in mini games or playstyles for the sake of variety into a game not really designed for this sort of thing or appealing to most people that enjoy the main game mechanics in place.
Will it cause me to stop playing? Nah, but it is definitely a recurring theme/issue with STO that needs addressing and the lagfest really needs to be addressed, I mean how hard would it be to move Q to somewhere besides the social hubs? I dunno like say...Risa? (If I were an omnipotent being I'd certainly prefer a pleasure planet over ESD) It would also be a great idea to add some sort of path to Qmendations that wasn't entirely based on the mini game whether it be some sort of racing (which seems popular) a Risa style scavenger hunt, etc. That way we aren't forced into one particular path which is obviously not for everyone.
Of course there is always the often mentioned option of "move along, nothing to see here" non participation, at least if they can get the lag issue sorted. Still it would be nice in the future (and coincidentally more profitable for PWE) if they actually engaged players across the spectrum of play styles and offered the single most important thing any game (particularly MMOs) can: choice. Meaningful choice.
Just my two cents (well considering the length of the post, 5 bucks) worth.
When you have to make a public declaration that you refuse to take any more abuse, it's pretty apparent that you've been taking a video game way too seriously.
How can you not take something seriously when you spent loads of money and thousands of hours on it?
pretty sure we are gonna hear the next time something comes out, that this will be the time they'll quit.
at this point i think they keep going for the pleasure of moaning, otherwise they would have left the forums and the game years ago.
pathetic...just quit, or keep playing. don't come hear every week and say you quit over something.
so... you're ******** about a minigame you DON'T have to do to craft an item you DON'T need for anything that was added to the game because you feel that you HAVE to grind it just because it was added to the game? lolwtf?
Again, its the disconnect between what the devs say and what they do...
They want to improve ques so we can "play what we want to" and then add a mindless daily grind that makes us needless run around the galaxy.
These "events" whether its grindaverissary, or Risa or Mirror are fun once or twice. But having to do it 15+ times is drudgery
If you think this game is grindy, you better never try another MMO, your head might explode. Even World of Casualcraft is about 10x as much grind as there is here. Those people wish they could do a 15 minute mission 15 times and get top tier loot.
For all 3 days now I have tried to do the mini games and the hole game lags out and will not let me do one complete run of Omega particles, nothing scores, rubber banding, ESD, Vulcan, DS9, it dose not matter, any faction.
I went to do some dilithium mining yesterday instead and they would not let me out the airlock to do it. So I feel there 5th birthday is a big FLOP.
Fixing things that have been not working right would have been much better then adding a bunch of stuff that isn't right yet on Tribble.

This anniversary mini-game made many people quit. Not sure if you noticed but the moment the "update" went live, the servers where so full that there was a queue to log in.
I dont see any more of that community anymore.. Why is that cyptic? Did you make them go away by enforcing them to spend their time they have to relax in a mini-game?
I can't start private queues anymore.. Thank you very much for this nonsense.
The game economy also is going from bad to worse. But I guess that doesnt affect you.
I think the launch of this mini game/anniversary event was a monumental flop.
That being said, I do enjoy seeing all the social zones busy with people makes me feel like I'm in an MMO again. I think it was a great idea to have you fly to different places to do the mini-game and keep the maps busy. The problem is if you're going to do this then you better make sure the system works and can handle the traffic. QA, QA, QA... that's all I can say about this.
I think the minigame is easy when it works but the lagfest and the hit or miss of the minigame mission completing, finishing early, or giving completion credit is just not acceptable. This is a game that is trying to encourage more frequent and concurrent user traffic with each new update but clearly doesn't have the infrastructure in place to support this with either QA or hardware capacity.
