This is my first time joining in on the forum fun, but Ive been playing STO for years!
I wanted to get some general opinions, I have the Tactical Odyssey T5U, and its served me well, especially with the Aquarius console. Its been a loyal ship. I also have the T6 pathfinder, which as much as I like it, I need something with a beefier hull stat, it wasnt tank-like enough for my needs. Im looking for something a little more versatile, and I was looking at the stats on the T6 Guardian Cruiser, and I have to say, Im kind of impressed. Anybody have an opinion which is better, specifically, offensively for tanking and for general combat? Thanks all!
Guardian is a solid, very versatile, tough ship. Very heavy ENG setup yet it has LtCdr in TAC as well as SCI. Not a true intel ship like the Eclipse but has access to intel nonetheless, at least to Lt level.
You can do things with the Fed T6 Cruisers that you can't with the T5U Fed Cruisers. The only unique thing that the T6 Fed Cruisers can't do is the SCI version of the Odyssey that has Sensor Analysis.
I've always said that the Guardian is what the Galaxy-class should have been.
For pure offense you can get a little more out of the Odyssey because of the universals and how that would let you double-up on offensive powers. However the Guardian can be set up to be almost as offensively powerful (especially if you have access to the Reciprocity trait from the Phantom), and have more durability and flexibility besides from the rest of its boff layout. Honestly they're so close its practically a question of aesthetics and if you want to spend the money or not. (And of course there is the Eclipse, which is basically the perfect offensive cruiser, but god its ugly).
Offensively, the Guardian is the superior ship. They are both fine ships, but a Guardian with the right build using Override Subsystem Safeties and Gravity Wells will out damage a Tactical Odyssey. The Odyssey can get close because it can double up Tactical Abilities, but the Guardians Science stations, plus the ability to use Intel Powers puts it ahead. If you happen to have the Reciprocity trait from the Tier 6 Phantom, then the Guardian pulls even further ahead rendering the Odyssey almost obsolete.
As for taking Damage, while the Guardian is known as a 'Tank,' the Odyssey actually wins here at T5-U. The Odyssey will have more hull and a better shield modifier being that it's essentially an upgraded Fleet Ship. Once the ability comes into play to upgrade the Guardian to Fleet it will be superior here as well.
Overall, with the Guardian you'll gain the ability to use Intel Powers as well as the improved Science Abilities. It is a better ship, but is it $30 better? Probably not.
They're both fine ships, if you just want to get a new ship and want to get some improvement for your money, the Guardian is a solid bet. If you're expecting it to completely outclass your Odyssey though, you might be a little disappointed.
If you take into account the Guardian's T5 Mastery, Desperate Repairs, it adds considerably to its survival (and the survival of any other ship you decide to use after gaining the Trait, but by that point, you've already probably spent a good deal already outfitting and maximizing the Guardian's potential).
Aside from that, its built-in console does allow it to shield tank to a ridiculous degree; more so if you pair it with Feedback pulse and/or Reverse Shield Polarity, and special shield-based sets like the Dyson or Aegis. Heck, it even works nicely with the MACO shield if you can't afford a Plasmonic Leech but need to draw fire to maximize its power boost (which also synergizes well with both Reciprocity and with the Eclipse's mastery).
In addition, with the console active, you gain a temporary boost to energy weapon damage and exotic damage.
From my personal use, I daresay the Guardian, with its console, is up there with the Advanced Obelisk and its console and the Voth Bulwark/Bastion and the Bastion console in terms of shield-based tanking, while still being able to deal out more overall consistent damage compared to either.

You can't have everything!
