Maintenance Today. Why 3 hours?

mrspam404mrspam404 Member Posts: 58 Arc User
Why is maintenance 3 hours long? Why is it 3 hours long, sometimes goes to 5 or 6 hours long? Every week? I mean really, Cryptic after all these years, with all your mmo's, which are really the same things with different skins on them, you can't do better than 3 hours downtime, every week? And like I said if it was only 3 hours, maybe you could understand that, but half the time it turns into 4,5,6, maybe 7 hours....

Serious responses please. Not trying to bash you Cryptic, I'm really serious. Also since I'm so good at predicting the future who wants to guess how long the downtime will really end up being today? I'll go with 4 hours 15 minutes. Whatcha think, post your guesses please.

It takes the cryptic diplomatic team about three hours to convince Q to discontinue his winter wonderland and return to the continuum without turning everyone into angry targs.

    As for serious replies:

A server farm takes a bit longer to shut down and restart than a PC, even if that's all they do (and this time, they have to install a bug fix, then try to make sure the fix didn't break three other things). Cryptic tried running the servers until updates were actually needed, and discovered that their systems developed a terrible memory-leak problem. Now they restart once a week, every Thursday, and avoid those particular issues.

On the plus side, at least it doesn't take as long as the weekly "updates" on WoW...

When reading these forums I get the feeling this is the first mmo most people here play. Downtime is a normal thing in every mmo and tbh I find this game to be one of the most reasonable ones. I rather have a weekly maintaince then a game that's down a whole weekend.

Because it's easier to say "Oh look, got it done in 30 mins when we scheduled it for 3 hours." than it is to say "Oh look, we'll need 6 hours when we scheduled it for 3 hours". Also, alot less flamey if you know what I mean.

You do know the concept of estimates, don't you? It means that it is not set in stone that the maintenance is going to be the amount of time that was specified. 3 hours is perfectly fine. You can wait that long, or do you think you are immune to waiting? Have patience.

Scotty knows us, they should start giving longer estimates for the patch days.

The maintenance is not only for patch,It is also to make the "physical" maintenance of the server, in the sense where it is necessary to change certain components etc....

If one day, Cryptic buy new server and changes the actually ... Is not few hours for make this change ... Cryptic can take 1 day or more for make this !

And as Jonsills said, a server it's not a PC!

I love all those overdramatic near-doom threads.

Like others said, the downtime includes working on the Server farms, replacing Servers or other components. And this cant be prepared or tested, but has to be done on the fly.

If components arent working as planed, the downtime is extended. A bad codeline can trigger a domino effect.

Especially events, and nee expansion and updates have more patchtime.

This game has a lot more maintenance outages/patches then most mmos I've ever played...and I've played quite a few. With that said I don't think a couple hours once a week is a huge deal.

Why does it take 3 hours - why not 1 hour? or 8 hours? Or 24 hours?

It's not something we can influence, and knowing why won't make it a second longer or shorter than it will be, will it?

It would certanily be interesting to know what is the kind of stuff that is going on during a maintanance, what tools or hardware they use and whatever. But just from an educational point of view. It won't go faster.

You can't find something else to do for a few hours? That is a great time for a nap, or maybe I will go for a long bike ride. Goodness knows, I could certainly use the exercise. Or maybe I will just stay home, and cook myself some fried pork loin, and watch Nerdcubed videos.

We know that they will be doing at least 3 things during this maintenance:

    - Applying the fix noted in this week's patch notes
    - Removing Q's Winter Wonderland from the game
    - Applying the XP event for the weekend

Last week maintenance got extended to about 5-6 hours. And every time they extended it, they said "We will be doing another review of our warpcore." What does that even mean?

I'd love to have WoW maintenance times. They are not even noticeable because most of the time they are simply rolling restarts or the downtime starts at 4 am. STO maintenances eat up a whole evening every week since they start at my prime time.

Since Devs don't answer on their own forum, but on Reddit instead, I'll copy and past the answer they gave.
[–]zeroniusrexZeroniusRex - Producer 8 points 10 hours ago

We're doing maintenance on some of our other servers, ones shared by all the games. :)

Guys, you know the devs official forum is reddit. Just check the icon revamp, where TTC is discussing with the redditors, while the official topic on the tribble forum have 0 dev interaction (beyond creating the topic itself).
Or that quote about the bug between the breen carrier mastery trait and the other one I can't discuss that made the game crash :
[–]zeroniusrexZeroniusRex - Producer 12 points 10 hours ago

The fix for the traits issue is 100% because some awesome Redditors made sure I knew about it. So, THANK YOU. :)

It was reported for a while in the forum when I saw the first topic on reddit.
And before someone argue about toxicity, this is not new (always been that way). And those topics were not toxic at all.

Stop asking questions to them here. Except for Tacofangs, the devs are on Reddit. Taco to, but he still post there.

Not necessities, the events are planned and automatically program 2 months in advance. If an event must be modified, this one would be notified in the patch.
You can look in the calendar in game.

I continue to despair at just how catastrophically stupid it is that the offical forum is the LAST place to look for updates on anything STO related.
That's not new. Since I play STO (f2p), the best place to look for dev interaction was always REDDIT.
Except for Branflakes. But then, it was his job (part of it anyway).

But yeah, that was always sad.

It's not Zero's job (or Taco's) to keep the forum informed about server maintenances. It's Smirk and Trendy's job as the game's CMs. Don't blame the devs who gravitate towards friendlier communities when the CMs are the ones who aren't communicating with this forum as they should.

I don't blame them. And yes, that's not their job, agreed. Then why giving the infos at all ? Why on REDDIT and not for us ? There was the exact same topic here BTW.

3 hours is the normal down time. The thing that has me upset is that they are starting it an hour early. I had my winter epohh doff missions timed to go off 15 minutes before the start of NORMAL maintenance. But since they are starting an hour early I am now being screwed out of one more series of epohh missions. Thanks Cryptic!

    I've been here since beta

What I'm pissed about is that they advertised everywhere that the Winter Wodnerland is going away an hour from now, that is at 7AM PST, and instead they bring it down an hour early. I don't mind the 3 hr downtime, but pls Cryptic why in the world can't you keep your word and take down the event when you say you do? Besides it's only 6 AM for you guys no? You couldv'e slept an hour more and started at 7 and went to 10 w/ the maintenance, instead of starting at 6 and going to 9.
Pls try to keep to your word next time and not mess up people's planning. Thank you.

I came to STO from the realm of Telon. Vanguard WOOT! but being a sony online game it got buggered and axed. Bur bugs and downtime? BAH! STO has nothing compared to the massive amounts of bugs, downtime, random deleted characters or all the other nonsense i've played through the past 15 years in the MMORPG world. I'm sure any other MMO vets would agree. To you STO, Hail *tips his hat, /bow
