Edited: was naming O.W. Amplifier as Proficiency. my bad, 4:30 am lol
Hi everyone, friend and I in fleet have been argueing back and forth about the proc, and the sacrifice made to gain it, put some really hard thought into it, and after I woke back up, realized I MIGHT be on to something here?
Wanted to pass this on to some of my betters and see what you guys think, particularly because I'm having a hard time understanding FaW's affect on power drain, (am assuming it is more power drain than a standard volley? And is affected by how many targets are in play? If not, then the below portion must be even more true?), this is actually a cut/paste copy of the ingame mail i sent to him, so bear in mind it's me talking to one person, and this thinking is based off personal fleet runs (30-60k runs) and the ships I see in them, I know some very advanced players may not be rocking ships that carry the Cruiser's Weapon Proficiency but for the sake of this discussion let's assume it's available and in play:
(I was orriginally around myself, when Task Force and Maco were the only "rep systems" but not for long due to ISP problems, returned less than a year ago, please correct me if i'm wrong about game history)
We're both AP users. +pla proc consoles, depending on ship in question.
To my fleet mate:
OK did some reading:
KCB and it's set were released during a time way before fleet starbases, fleet gear and all the other rep system's universal consoles that add power. Task force omega and Maco used to be the ONLY "rep" systems, till Season 6. Meaning back then, it was one of the few ways we had of adding power resistance, and we had even fewer ways of adding bonus power. Since then we've gained a ton more. Including some of the following....
(Thinking conduit run, assuming at least one person has weapon sys eff.)
Cruiser's weapon sys. efficiency -25% cost
Bounty hunter's friend console reduces weapons power cost by 10% and I think some EPS.
so now we're only looking at 65% power drain, with 8 beams base drain of 80pwr, that trims pwr drain down to only 52.
pair that with fleet WC resist, EPtW, leech, A2B, Wcap, Ship consumable batteries and maybe one or two other bonuses I can't think off, we can pin weapon power to max, except for maybe that last beam shot or two under the worst of FaW.
To me that spells omega weapons amplifier, while an awesome effect, is overkill. It only procs here and there, and it's situational to whether or not you're even taxing your weapon power enough to make much use of it's benefit, AND there's no guarantee it WILL proc THEN when you actually need it.
So in summary, (IMO) we're giving up more than we're gaining because:
We're trading off a heavily buffed (AP+ consoles), multi-targeting (FaW) AP crtDx4 array during large FaW3 broadsides.
FOR:
KCB, SINGLE target (FaW does not work on it), DMGx3, unbuffed by plasma+ or AP+, Kinetic based dmg which is near useless on shields.
BECAUSE:
We're trying to get an unreliable proc, who's bonus power, and bonus pwr resist may scarcely be there when we need it most. And in many situations, is not needed to maintain max power.
Thoughts?
Go easy on me guys, I know I'm far from having this game all figured out, but for my research so far, I haven't found a reason to justify giving up an 8th of our FaW potential (1 of 8 AP beam arrays in 50k+ dps runs)
for a random, proc that most of the time may not be there when we need it the most.
- i might be underestimating how often it CAN proc based on each weapon's chance to activate it.
Comments
Should probably point out I'm newer to logging dps, and still getting that overall feel for multiple test runs one way, then multiple test runs another way. And that this is my smaller social circles practice for the most part, of using the KCB to gain the proc. Perhaps one of us just needs to find the correct, older, post, assuming it's empirical. hehe
Fixed it for you.

There's good reasons it's in, oh, every 100k+ parse I've ever seen, and it's not because it's bad...
