Everybody is special

Everybody is Special.

It has always bothered me that EVERYONE in STO is an Admiral. I would LOVE for Cryptic to design a mission where you got busted. Something in line with “Stealing the Enterprise” but as a result, we all get bumped down to Captain.

What’s that line from the Incredible’s?

“Everyone can have powers. Everyone can be super! And when everyone's super...no one will be.”

The same applies here.

“Everyone can be an Admiral. Everyone can be in charge! And when everyone’s in charge…no one will be!”

LOVE you STO! I have hopes that you will continue to get better. You're a little sick right now but you've been this way before. You always come out a champion. I have faith that you'll beat the bug.

Everyone is special? Does that mean the next event is the special Olympics?
This program, though reasonably normal at times, seems to have a strong affinity to classes belonging to the Cat 2.0 program. Questerius 2.7 will break down on occasion, resulting in garbage and nonsense messages whenever it occurs. Usually a hard reboot or pulling the plug solves the problem when that happens.

We never should have raised the level cap beyond RA5 as it was at launch. As a matter of fact, it would have been ideal to have everyone end at Captain and then all this DR nonsense would have been established way back in the day as the Admiral ranks would take you much longer to climb through. But I guess they were so interested in selling Fleet T5 everything that they didn't think or design for the long term.
Delta Rising is the best expansion ever and the players love it! No, seriously! ...Why are you laughing so hard? :(

Jerry lewis telethon for kazon. The goal is to help the kazon improve themselves enough that Borg are willing to assimilate them.

Best suggestion I saw (and I apologize to the author for forgetting your name) was to make the ranks unlocks, so if you want you could be an admiral, but its not mandatory.

    Yep.

Should have stopped ranks at the canon hero rank of Captain. But still had Admiral available in game for those who wanted it by having the Title available to Fleet (guild) Leaders.

That would have made being an Admiral actually mean something...something special.

But as the OP says, "Everyone is special" in STO.

Unfortunately the whole 'Captain as default endgame rank' horse left the barn long, long ago. :(

Yeah, getting 5 people to form a fleet is so special :D

*resets the "days without an admiral rank debate" counter back to zero*

Damnit...DAMNIT! So close. Couldn't you have waited another day or two? Save it for next year? But no...you had to be impatient and start this up before the year closed. ARGH!

The forums need to open every dead horse thread before it's 2015 everywhere on the planet
It would mean you actually had to put in a little extra effort to get it...instead of it being dumped in your lap/forced on you.

Yeah nothing like spamming ESD with EC to bring out that extra effort

Eh, just look at it the way you're meant to look at it.

You, your Captain alone is the special one who does all these amazing things. Everyone else is just a random captain of a random, not-so-special ship with their own unique inability to follow a uniform code! ;)

But the line in The Incredibles is disproved in the movie itself, as the family demonstrates that what separates them from the likes of Syndrome isn't power, but what they do with it. Their powers don't make them special - their willingness to use those powers to protect people without any is what sets them apart.

As for the ranks, I call for gameplay/story segregation here. Officially, my main is a Vice Admiral and climbing - but as far as I'm concerned, since the Hans Asperger isn't a fleet flagship, he's a captain. I might go as high as commodore, considering the size and power of an Oddy prototype, in which case I'll insist his first officer is in fact a captain (something else the game doesn't want to acknowledge), but that's it.

So storywise, no matter what the dialog says, we're all captains. (Personally, I'd like a branching fork in dialog for Feds, with two options - if your in-game rank is Commander or less, dialog calls you "Skipper" [or "Captain" for those not members of your crew], and above that you're just called "Captain".)

So currently I have Commander Church, "Skipper" to his crew, commanding USS Endeavour-C, an Ambassador-class cruiser. I have Capt. Vazlav, at lvl 43, commanding patrol escort USS Halsey. And I have Commodore Sills, at lvl 54, commanding USS Hans Asperger. I just mentally convert all in-game dialog to the appropriate rank.

But...but, I am a Captain. It says so, floating there over my head.

The game doesn't recognize lots of Admirals only the npc Admirals and the player. So all the Admirals flying around are just Captains. Some MMOs acknowledge multiple players, but STO is a single player game with npcs of varying intelligence as far as the game is concerned.

If you insist on remaining at Captain rank, don't accept your promotions past that rank. Problem solved. Of course, then you won't get the free ship tokens and other benefits, but hey, you're just a Captain, so you shouldn't want those higher tier ships and other benefits ...

Or, how about this? Distinguish between the game mechanics and your RP rank, use the title for whatever rank you want to be considered and act in accordance.

But by all means, feel free to NOT tell me what rank I am or can be based on your desires for yourself.

Yeah, it's the players curse. We can never be wrong, even when we are.

Still, the option is always there to attempt to slow the speed of your career. Choose a title for the rank you'd like to be at, stick with the proper tier of ship for longer than a few weeks and stuff like that.

It does make the game more interesting. Sometimes I would play around in the Undine BZ in a T3 Raptor and just target frigates and smaller cruisers. It's easier with Tac careers obviously since even this can do reasonable damage.

Nope! I don't want to be de-ranked! Taken me to many hours, days, weeks and months to be at Level 60 on 3 player factions I manage. No fun to go through the entire process again. No thanks.

They abolished "Skipper" as a military rank for Earth long ago though.:(

Right now, where the hell do they go next? We are already at Fleet Admiral. There's no place else to go with it. At some point, rank will HAVE to be disconnected from level, and as far as I'm concerned I would be absolutely thrilled to have the max rank drop back to Captain.
    That's what Specializations are for.

Instead of having to repeatedly raise the levels and ranks, they just side-grade it as new Specializations and their accompanying ships. All those who've already grinded out the full Spec tree are technically level 90 or so; Cryptic just gave us 10 more levels to hit Admiral rank and close it there.

They won't even have to raise the level cap anymore; just release new specializations and their ships, and make money off that way rather than having to repeatedly sell new Tiers of ships.

Really though, the only thing that is long overdue is upgrading our Boffs to Captain and letting them command a reserve ship we can take along into missions without any further NPC increases (like you'd get if you went as a team). Hell, have the promotion come with an instant upgrade to Ultra Rare Boffs and an improved Trait, and then sell Epic Boffs from their C-Store and Fleet Holding.

How about this one: make the gear "WEAR OUT"

each mission contributes to gear damange. space and ground. After awhile it just doesn't repair, and you need to buy new gear.

I can hear all the Gold XIV people screaming "not fair" for this one

There are other players besides me? Nah, cryptic is just good with their AI!

It is truly amazing how advanced their AI is. Had this one npc butt in line for the winter race just like what an inconsiderate meatbag would do. And some of the npcs on Zone Chat make it impossible to tell if they are a npc or someone that suffered serious brain damage.

I think that Cryptic added their AI technology to the forums to make it appear that there are more people that are interested in STO than there actually are. After all, Cryptic has to make the game appear thriving to the Whales.

I have no problem RPing a Captain and ignoring 'Admiral' rank. But, the NPC's still call us Fleet Admiral (Which is dumb in itself, should just stick to 'Admiral'), and that's kinda meh. The least Cryptic could do, is let us set a title the NPC's address us with. I mean, it shouldn't be that hard, should it? :)
