Low Level Melee Weapons

So - started a new toon last night and figured I'd craft some gear for him.

I want to make one of his boffs a melee specialist (I know boffs are pretty weak at melee, but want to give it a shot). Figure what the heck, craft a Very Rare Physical Augmentation Armor, get melee traits on him, and then I find out it looks like they snuck melee weapons OUT of the crafting system with the revamp. (Could craft them at any mk level in the old system, iirc).

Is there any low level source for melee weapons? I know colliseum hands out free ones, but I'm hoping my boff doesn't have to go around smacking people until level 20-30 when I get there.

Klingon Academy has batleths at the ground equipment vendor. They are white quality so I don't think they're bind on pickup.

If you don't have a KDF or Romulan-KDF character they may be on the exchange. If not, I could get you one tonight (after 5 Pacific time).

You could get one, apply an improved upgrade, then level it up as your character levels and hope it goes green or better.

At Captain rank there are a bunch of blue Lirpas on the exchange from the Nimbus III rewards.

Thanks - I have a KDF character, so guess I'll buy one and port it over.

Shame they removed melee from crafting - no logic to that...

The old crafting had a paltry assortment of melee weapons in it. Oh and you couldn't craft purple 2 then either. the old crafting system only let you craft greens at mk2.

Yes - but I could craft greens at 2, blues at IV and up. I'd settle for a green at 2, and a blue at IV would probably be fine to just upgrade from there.

The whole game only has a paltry assortment of melee weapons. We have what, the faction weapons, and 3 swords?

I'd say that going from a very small number of melee weapons to 0 in the crafting system is some steps back. Same with the large batteries etc. Don't even get me started on kits... Some parts of the new crafting system are better, some worse, way it is I guess.

its not that boff's are weak at melee. its the fact that they stand like statues with a bat'leth in hand doing nothing

Yes, unfortunately the BOFF AI in STO does not instruct BOFFs to chase down enemies, and instead has them engage anything that comes within weapons range. Weapons range for melee weapons is about three meters, vs. 15 or more meters for all guns. Really, they OUGHT to pursue enemies within 15-20 meters, but they don't.
