I came into the game since I found it as F2P on steam. At first I was completly overwhelmed by all the settings of the UI and was even struggling to understand how to get from A to B. This was the first MMO I ever tried. Luckily I had some "pro" friends on steam that helped me out and showed me arround. Even bought me my first lvl 50 gear.
I then invested some money cuz I found it to be fun and enjoying, got my fleet stuff and started a second toon. Ever since I started getting different gears and trying out different consoles n stuff. I went a lot to Defera and Dyson BZ and did a lot of queues. Even did some PVP which was fun.
Now Delta Rising was announced which got me excited and I started +2 toons and bought the Delta Pack even tho I didn't like the design of the ships. Arround that time the new R&D system was introduced + the upgrade system. I basically ignored it cuz I was just looking forward to Delta Rising.
On the release of Delta Rising I had great pleassure in completing the story missions, the patrols and HP of the ships kinda got me like wtf, but anyway I liked the story missions. After some time people got at me that I need to come to Tau Dewa immediately. I had no glue what was going on but since I found out I leveled my 2 mains to 60 and leveled some of those ugly ships for the trait.
So I finished everything and wanted to go back to my normal daily play. I started to look into upgrades to MK14 and was shocked about the prices and requirenments. I managed to upgrade my fleet defiant T5U to mk14 completly which didn't feel satisfying at all to the end. It feels like it does worse than it did before on mk12 pre delta rising. I went through the pain of upgrading one toons ground equipment. I now realisied I can never really switch between loadouts cuz I don't want to go through the upgrade process and itz cost again. The optional queue timers made me stop the PvE queues. After the Tau Dewa nerf I started realising the length of leveling and stopped using my 2 new toons.
I basically stopped plaiyng STO now since I don't see a real point in logging in anymore. I can't play a quick queue for materials cuz it takes time to start and mostly fails (rewards are laughable anyway). The upgrades don't feel satisfying. I don't want to invest the ressources and time for my other toons. I'm burned out by the grind of this game. On top of all that when you lose joy and start to think more critical I see them only trying to milk their players now.
So afterall I hope something will change so I can play again.
I got to that point, I stopped buying things a while ago, I do occasionally snap up FSMs for ships or for EC but only if I'm at a loss for better things to waste my money on. The way I got around that feeling was to say to myself "TRIBBLE Levelling, TRIBBLE Rep, TRIBBLE DPS and to heck with upgrading" (basically everything they want you to do) now I've gone back to my tac/scort with newfound enjoyment of the class, it's the only thing I have which carries the killing power needed to get through NPCs in good time now, I murder many, many things as and when the mood takes me, to be honest I do that for the sake of it and I chat with fleeties.
It's a shame that'a all there is left to do in the game. The way they want us to play they might as well remove the grinds and make it a subscription only game with optional extras again.
You really summed things up better than any of the long time veterans have done so far.
The thing that broke this game was the crazy greed for upgrades. We can no longer have multiple sets of gear because of the insane costs.
I totally agree with the OP. This was my favourite game for over 18 months until someone seriously dropped the ball.
The only thing that will save this game from the inevitable months of "maintenance mode" (or it being suddenly killed off) is a reversal of the poorly thought out changes that were made in the patches since DR dropped.
I feel sorry for the developers who worked hard on the game only to see their hard work rendered worthless by very poor decision making.
He is saying he hopes they fix it so he can play again.
The only reason I log in anymore is for winter event doffing and TOI till I hit 10 for the unlock. Any devs who bother reading the forums can look at my account activity and confirm this.
OP pretty much sums up how I feel about the game too. Just not worth logging in anymore, upgrades are far too expensive in the time and materials investment required compared to the benefit of the upgrade. Leveling was slowed down far too much, was too fast but Cryptic way over compensated in the other direction and the reliance on repeated patrol missions in place of real story content was pathetic. I got so tired of it I only got about 80% of the way through DR story content before I gave up on it. Really regret buying the expansion pack, waste of money.
Toying around with gear really got shot down... go for one setup and upgrade only perfect items. I'm doing fine with mk xii and will stay there for now.
Sounds about right. Everything is grind, DPS, and loud-mouthed ego anymore. Personally I find building ships to still be fun, but actually using them is just a nuisance. It used to be fun, just wish they'd change it back.

This is why I only upgraded Tac consoles. It was far far cheaper to upgrade them alone, and I get to switch weapon types at will.

Free Tibet!
When people say "this is gonna get locked" they really mean "I want this thread to get locked"
Not sure why you'd want a thread containing a player's review of the game to get locked. Maybe you'd like to explain for the sake of clarity?

One of the best indeed .
It's like we're all waiting for someone upstairs to unclench ... , while the only song that can be heard outside of the closed office doors is:
"Metrics, metrics, metrics,
Metrics are so much fuuuun,
Metrics, metrics, metrics,
Metrics all day looong !!! "
... would you like a metric friend ... ?
