Ship upgrade not weapons upgrade

I'd rather have the opportunity to upgrady my favorite ship slots than upgrade every single item. Right now ship switchers can swap upgraded gear easily, that's fine for people that switch to other ships often. I for one have one main ship per toon which is at least T-5U.
Most if not every mmo focuses on gear progression but mk 14 gold is all we're ever gonna get until the game shuts down.
I know of many people that already have all items at very/ultra rare mk 14 they don't even bother trying to go for gold. That means they have reached end game. Whatever new things the devs come up with cannot be of any interest to endgamers that have been investing so heavily in what they have. They are stuck with their "final" choice of equipment. Only the "rich guys" that buy everything with real money (dil/ec/mats) can upgrade a whole set of new stuff. That's not the majority of the player base that keeps this game breathing. So how would one be able to overcome this problem? Simple. Keep the upgrade system as it is. You wanna upgrade single items and put them on any of your ships, fine. You can still do so. But for those that wanna swap whole sets or try new things that may come in the future, it would be far more ideal to be able to upgrade your entire main ship.
Minimum requirement to qualify for a two tier upgrade is T5-U. Tier 1= mk 13 Tier 2=mk 14
The upgrade system could work like starbase projects with marks required from all factions that would fill the queues again. Dilithium and materials could also be part of it. After completing tier 2 for your ship every item that is at least mk 12 very rare will auto upgrade to mk 14 of the original rarity but lose its upgrade status when it's removed. I am no crafter so i have already reached endgame again with no desire to participate in the grind to upgrade every single item. But upgrading my ship to auto upgrade items would definately keep me playing.

Wouldn't that be sweet? Pay out the nose to upgrade the T2 Connie or the T1 NX until it matched your favorite Cruiser or Escort? I'd almost think about it...
